Peter Lundberg Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 26, 2023.
Peter Lundberg, a lifelong resident of Minnesota's North Shore, was beloved by friends, family, and strangers alike for his goofy sense of humor, ever-calming presence, and wisdom about everything from bird watching to mixing the perfect "martooni." He completed his earthly journey peacefully in Chanhassen, MN on May 14 at age 86.

Born July 13, 1936 in Two Harbors, MN, Peter Allen Lundberg was the youngest of John W. "Fritz" and Ida O. Lundberg's five children. Later in life, Peter recalled that being the youngest by eight years meant he had much less supervision than his older siblings had experienced. At one point, he shared with a mischievous smirk, he nearly burned the family's Two Harbors home to the ground during a mishap with some fireworks in the basement.

Peter graduated from Two Harbors High School in 1953. When he turned 18, he joined the United States Air Force, where he served as a meteorologist for nearly 23 years. In 1962, Peter met Heidemarie "Heidi" Buerkl in Rome, Italy and they found love at first sight. Heidi and Peter were married on August 10, 1963 and welcomed their only son, Christoph Peter, to the world later that year.

After moving around through several assignments in the United States, the Lundbergs returned to Italy for a two-year assignment in Verona before Peter put in for a permanent assignment near his hometown in 1970 at Duluth, MN, where he retired honorably in 1978. Peter and Heidi spent years savoring home cooked meals, intense Scrabble games, gardening, and spending time with family together. An avid outdoorsman and fisherman, Peter enjoyed spending time on the lake with his loved ones more than anything else. Peter was also a talented artist, and the Lundberg home's walls were covered in his beautiful North Shore landscapes.

Survived and sorely missed by Heidi, his wife of nearly 60 years; son Chris (Shannon) Lundberg; daughter-in-law Julie (Rod) Bailey; grandchildren Andrew and Sarah Lundberg; nephew Tim (Denise) Lundberg; grandnieces Emily and Lauren Lundberg; and grandnephew Carter Lundberg.

Preceded in death by his parents, four elder siblings, and many dear friends.

Peter lived with dementia and received compassionate, dignified care from many healthcare professionals during his final years. The family is endlessly thankful to each caregiver who touched Peter's life and kept him comfortable and happy during this time.

Peter's interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery on June 27th.
