Peter MUDRY Obituary

Published by Windsor Star on Apr. 7, 2015.

MUDRY, Peter
Peter passed away peacefully on April 4, 2015 at the age 92. Beloved husband of the late Laura with whom he shared 55 years of marriage. Cherished father to Denise (Earl) Duckworth, Peter (Eva) Mudry, and Anita (Tom) Konopka. Grandfather to Todd, Ian and Leigh Duckworth. Great-grandfather to Eleanor. Peter left a mark of excellence in Windsor both as an educator and athlete. He was a member of the famous Assumption College Basketball Team known as the "Fighting Freshman." Coached by "Red" Nantais this team included teammates Ado Rorai, Ralt Wade, Bill Coulthard, Al Scorgie and close lifelong friend Gino Sovran. He guided his team to two consecutive wins over the Harlem Globetrotters which became the topic of the article "Twice the Impossible Dream" representing two of the most memorable moments in Windsor Sports. His teams won the Ontario Championship, the Eastern Canadian Championship and participated in the Canadian Championship. Known as a "classy" guard, his outstanding all-around play earned him a place in the University of Windsor Basketball Hall of Fame. He was also Class President in 1945. Peter was also a contributing member of the 1946 - 47 Tip Top Tailor Basketball Team in Toronto. He taught and coached at Riverside and Blakelock (Oakville) High School. He coached Riverside Basketball to four undefeated league teams, four league championship teams, and four WOSSA Championships. He was also a major contributor for the Trafalgar Chicks 1957 Ontario Championship Softball Team and Local 195 Senior Baseball Ontario Championship Team. As an educator for 41 years he taught History, Mathematics, Physical Education and Geography at the Secondary School level. From 1956 - 1968 he was Vice-Principal at Gordon E. Purdue High School in Oakville. He became Principal of Sandwich Secondary High School in 1970. He later spearheaded a committee for a new High School to be located in LaSalle which was built in 1974 - 75. He was instrumental in introducing concepts such as tutorial systems and innovative courses in Science, English and Mathematics. He introduced computerized timetables used for class scheduling, which was later adopted by the Province of Ontario. He also introduced Canadian History to the curriculum which was later adopted by the Ministry of Education. During his tenure he also introduced an Art and Music Department which later became regarded as one of the best for secondary schools in Ontario. While Principal at Sandwich Secondary his school became known throughout Ontario for its outstanding staff, innovative thinking, cutting-edge programs and Standard of Excellence. He was most proud of his family, and the many close friendships he made both in education and athletics. If you so desire, donations to Sandwich Secondary School Peter Mudry Bursary would be appreciated. Visitation Wednesday from 7 - 9 p.m. & Thursday from 3 - 5 & 7 - 9 p.m. Funeral Friday 10 a.m. at

Even though I have been retired from teaching for 20 years, when I think back to my career, I often think about Pete Mudry. He was the principal when I moved to Sandwich Secondary. It was then being run out of General Amherst High School on the afternoon shift. It was a difficult way to run a school for five years.

In spite of that issue, Pete Mudry never changed who he was, or how he ran the school. He had rules to be followed by staff and other rules for students. If you made a mistake and broke a rule, you would hear about it instantly and strongly. Once that had been done, he mentored you on how to not make that mistake again, and then you would feel the warmth that he expressed to all his staff and students.

He was that unusual combination of a strict, regimented person who also cared very much for those he worked with, and for the students he was responsible for. What a man.

The happy memories

Grandpa,
It's been one year since we lost you and I miss you every day. I remember your laugh - laughing so hard that you're near tears, and I remember the good times we shared. I will always love you, and I will never forget you. despite missing you, I'm happy you're reunited with Mimi, and Uncle Skeets.
Love,

Denise, Peter and Anita: Thank you for taking such good good care of one of the best teachers anyone ever had. We Riversiders got him early in his triumphant career and we are mighty thankful for his contributions in our lives. We might have forgotten the history but we will never forget the teacher. And what a coach! Yes, we had the talent but nobody taught the pick-and-roll like he did. Even now watching the best NBA teams go at it, his lessons keep you aware of what is really happening in the game. Gratitude, gratitude, gratitude for him in our lives. He set more boys straight in the '50s than anyone will know.
He was a magnificent man living a magnificent life full of contributions and innovations. One imagines he was also an exceptional father, and to that I wish you comfort at this time. Be proud.

I will forever remember Mr Mudry for his benevolent leadership at Sandwich.
I was the "Prime Minister" that year, when we moved into the new school.
During our election speeches, I praised my familiarity with Mr Mudry by referring to him as "Pete". When I looked over to him, following the school's laughter, he was just smiling. We never spoke of my comment, but at age 16, we were kindred spirits.
That comment won the election.
Now, almost 40 years later, he is forever cherished and remembered by so many of us. A true gentleman and an inspiring principal.
The school he created is his legacy to me.
My condolences to "Pete"s family. :)

My sincere condolences to the Mudry family.
Mr. Mudry was THE best principal Sandwich has ever had! As a student, in the early 80's, I always found him approachable and it was obvious that he cared for and was relational with his staff and students. I later years, when he would come into the bank I worked at , he remembered who I was and always asked how I was doing and how my family was. He left a wonderful legacy at SSS!

In short, I have many positive memories of Mr. Mudry. I attended grades 9-13 at Sandwich Secondary in the seventies. He was always helpful and he made you feel that he cared, always making connections with you, knowing your name and how you were doing in school. I have since gone on to become a teacher and a school principal myself. Mr. Mudry was certainly a role model who influenced many teens, staff, parents and the community as a whole.
My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

I was a brand new teacher at Sandwich SS in 1984 under the guidance of then Principal, Peter Mudry. He was an outstanding leader, but also a warm, funny and compassionate human being who clearly loved his job, students and staff. I was only there briefly, but the gift of his leadership remains indelibly printed on my memory. Thank you for the obituary outlining his incredible athletic feats as well, a part of his life story I did not know. My sincere sympathy to Peter's family and friends, a true loss for them I am sure, but hopefully it will help to know that he made an incredible difference in so many lives during his time!

He was a visionary when it came to Education and a very kind and compassionate man when it came to dealing with people. He always took the time to ask how things were going and he took the time to listen to what you had to share. Truly a great loss for the Sandwich Secondary community. Denise, Peter and Anita,
Please accept my deepest sympathy. Your father was an exceptional man, an exceptional principal. His decisions as a school leader were always based on what was right for the school and for the students. From scratch, he created a wonderful staff and school (Sandwich Secondary). I can't tell you how great it was to teach for a man who's primary motivation was an unselfish concern for the staff and students in his school. I wish I could be there personally to share my condolences, but I can't.
