Peter Piecowye Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 14, 2007.
PIECOWYE - Peter, it is with sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Piecowye, beloved husband to Nettie (nee Dyck) and father to Nancy and Curtis. Peter was born in Peterson, SK on January 9, 1935 to Anton and Dora Piecowye (nee Osabchuk). He grew up on the farm and took his schooling in the Peterson and Meacham district. At the age of 18, he left Meacham for Saskatoon, where he found work at the Foundry and then at Robin Hood before he found his true calling at the age of 21, when he joined the Prince Albert City Police in 1956. In May of 1960, he married the love of his life, Nettie. They built a house on an acreage west of the city on the Shellbrook Highway and have never left. They had two children, Curtis in 1967 and Nancy in 1969. Peter was a true public servant who enjoyed serving his community for nearly 38 years before retiring from the Prince Albert City Police as an Inspector in 1994. He was a founding member of Prince Albert Crime Stoppers and was a past president of the Prince Albert Rotary Club. While he found his work rewarding, his family always came first. He supported his children in their activities and enjoyed taking many vacations that included trips to Disneyland, Las Vegas, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Montana, ski trips to the mountains, and pulling the trailer to the lake on the weekends. As a true "people person " no matter where he went, he always ran into someone he knew, stopping for a quick chat. In his early years of retirement, he was able to share some great trips with Nettie; the most memorable being a cross-Canada drive to the Maritimes as well as spending a winter in the southern United States. On May 24, 2006, Peter and Nettie celebrated 46 years of marriage. Peter was a loving Grandpa to his three young grandchildren; Landis, Sydney and Nolan. Peter's life changed in 2002 when the first of his health problems showed up as a benign brain tumor. In the last year of his life, he was diagnosed with a blood disorder that very recently developed into an acute form of Leukemia. On February 11, 2007, at the age of 72, he slipped away peacefully, his body too weak to fight any longer. Peter Piecowye is survived by his loving wife Nettie; his daughter Nancy (Dean) Fetch of Saskatoon and his grandchildren Landis, Sydney and Nolan Fetch. He is survived by his brothers William (Tillie) of Summerland, BC, Steve (Stella) of Saskatoon, SK and Morris (Carol) of Leduc, AB; his sister Rose (Ed) Stewart of Calgary, AB as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Curtis Lyndon Peter on January 19, 2006; his father Anton in 1975; his mother Dora in 1994 and a brother John in 2006. Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, February 15, 2007, at the Messiah Lutheran Church with Pastor Rick Johnson officiating. Interment will be at South Hill Cemetery. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gray's Funeral Chapel. Lorne Adams, Funeral Director.

I went to a one room country school (Red Willow) with Peter in 1950. He was 7 years older than I was and he was a hero in my eyes back then. I did try to follow Peter's career over the years and indeed it was an illustrious one. My father was also Peter's teacher at that time.

It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of "Pete". We worked on many interesting cases together while I was stationed in Prince Albert from 1969-77. He was a great friend, colleague and mentor whom I admired very much. My thoughts and prayers are with the family
