When a person passed away, if anyone should ask how the person passed, Dad would always say, "Shortness of breath". It was his way of having the last word. And boy did he like to have the last word, whether it be in victory or defeat. Well, now dad has succumbed to shortness of breath, an affliction he never suffered from while living. Dad loved golf, Notre Dame football, Temple basketball and Philadelphia sports in general. He also loved his family. His entire family. He remembered birthdays, names and events of family members, even up to within weeks of his passing. It was often a struggle to express his love in tangible ways. He made no bones about that. He took as many licks (some self-inflicted) as anybody I ever met. He did not suffer in silence. But when it came time to pay the piper, he bucked up every time, right up to the day he died. Dad was not the kind of guy who shot for the roof, he shot for the moon. I like to think that most of his neighbors would have preferred to put a pool in their backyard or a trampoline to soften his blow when he came back down to earth. Some may have preferred to put thorn bushes or stones in their yard and a chair on their roof to watch. Well, there would be no thorn bushes in Dad´s yard, and none in mine. We always cheered the guy who keeps getting back up. The world needs people who shoot for the moon as much as they need people who shoot for the roof. And we all could use a soft landing some time. Well, dad stayed down this time and landed softly. Love you, dad!

Scott

I had not seen Pete in years. He was an older cousin, among a massively large group of relatives. But when I was in high school, making my way to Cardinal Dougherty, I would somehow find myself running late and missing the bus. I was maybe 14 or 15. Trying to get to school on time and avoid detention, I would put up thumb up, working my way up the long hill on West Mt. Pleasant Avenue, blissfully hoping for a ride. And this gut hits the brakes, opens the door and asks where I'm heading. It was Pete. I didn't recognize him, as he was an older cousin, but he obviously recognized me as one of the Grover hoard. He asked if I knew he was and them told me he was Danny's twin. He took me to school and did so again, every now and then. He always treated me well, as young baby-faced Catholic school kid, looking out for me without ever saying so!! Hope he and all in his world are at peace.
