Peter Uli Obituary

Peter J. Uli, retired Army SFC, age 71, died on Feb. 6, 2007, at the VA Hospice in Washington, D.C. He was born in New Orleans, La., and resided in Woodbridge, Va., since May 1977. He was a life member of Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Mount Vernon Chapter No. 11. He was a retired U.S. Army Combat Engineer and a retired Master Instructor at the Engineer School at Fort Belvoir, Va. He retired in 1975, after 21 years of service. He had tours of duty in Austria, Germany, Italy, Korea and Vietnam. During his tour of Vietnam, he developed a new method of priming explosives and called it the "Uli Knot," which was approved by the Pentagon in 1971 and is still used world wide by armed forces and other government agencies. He became a reserve coordinator for his last 8 years with the Department of Plans, Training, Mobilization, and Security (DPTMA) and finally retired in December of 1997. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph P. Uli; his biological mother, Anita Turo; and his stepmother, Mary Zabbia Uli. Survivors include his wife, Barbara A. Uli of Woodbridge, Va.; one son, Patrick C. Uli and daughter-in-law, Rhett P. Uli, of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Connie Walters of Vero Beach, Fla., and Anita Cox of Zachary, La. He is also survived by his granddaughter, Karen Uli Dickson; and two great-grandsons, Anthony J. Uli and Andrew C. Dickson of New Orleans, La. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the funeral service at noon on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 4143 Dale Blvd. Dale City, Va. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2007, at Arlington National Cemetery. The Rev. Charles Smith from Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church will officiate.
