Sad to discover this obituary. I´m thinking of Phil today...as I pack up my beautiful set of ceramic dishes we commissioned him to make for us...back 40 plus years ago while living in Landing, NJ. (We are old and the dishes are too heavy for us.) I hope and pray they are going to someone who will appreciate them...a young couple, newly married, in Milwaukee, WI. Long live Phil's legacy.

I knew Phil when I went to the shore every summer. He lived around the corner from our bungalow. Saw him last when he was doing ceramics in N J. Still have his stuff. Met he and his family one time in Fl. So sorry to hear of his passing. I was just cleaning one of the ceramic items and decided to look him up.

Remembering the many trips up and down Interstate 81 to Tusculum College including flat tires, snowstorms and fog. Many years later running into Phil walking the beaches of the Jersey Shore. I'll miss seeing Phil at the TC dinners in North Jersey. My sincere condolences to the family especially to his mom(my bank teller) and brother, Wayne(softball pitcher for The Shipwheel).

We worked with Phil for many years and loved him. Who didn't! He was the life of any "party" he joined. Such a good spirit and good company. Our deepest sympathy to his family. We mourn his loss.

Mr. Hirleman was a Great teacher, my son Sal always looked forward to his class. He inspired Sal to go into Graphic Design. He will be miss by all he met. So sorry for your loss.

Phil was an old friend and colleague from Hopatcong where we taught together whose optimism sustained us and whose talents were many. His pottery and ceramic art are still all about my home many years later. I am remembering his smile, twinkling eyes, and his gentleness. Phil was terrifically unique. I am very sad to learn he is gone.
