I was telling stories about my childhood and kept mentioning Phil's name, so my daughter in law looked him up online and we came across this obituary.
Phil and I were friends back in 8th grade in Erie, PA. We were the first graduating class from Our Lady's Christian School (St. Jude) and worked there over the summer cutting grass. We lost track of each other when we both enlisted in the Army and went to Vietnam. To my great surprise, Phil showed up at Valley Forge Hospital to visit me while I was recovering from my wounds from the service.
He was a good man. I regret that we did not keep in better touch. I will never forget him.

I remember when I first met Phil through VFW Post #691 (and Jim Hespe). We had many beers together and a lot of fun. Joe Birchill (formerly from Drexel Hill, PA)

I remember when my father, Jim Hespe, welcomed Phil to the post. Phil was always kind and helpful. May you rest in peace.

Philip was someone that truly met all the "credentials" of being a hero. As John Wayne said (I'm using this quote because Pam told me Phil loved his old Western movies) "True courage is being scared, but saddling up anyway!". I've always loved this quote and over the years have discovered how true it is by being blessed with knowing someone like Phil. He not only survived through undescribable events in the Vietnam War, but kept them close to his heart and wore the memories with pride. When others, including me, would have crumpled into a ball of self-pity after the war, Phil not only went on but his life flourished with the love he felt and proudly displayed for his daughters, grandchildren, friends & family. Everyone was a friend to Phil, it didn't matter who you were. But the friends that were special to him knew it because he never passed up the opportunity to let them know how much he loved and cherished them.
Personally, I'm honored to have known Philip and through my sadness I can't help laughing thinking about what's going on over the other side now that he's joined Fred, John 1212, and the many others who have left their indelible mark on the heart of Travers Market.
Thank you, Phil, for making every time I saw you more than just a little happier. I look forward to the day when I can hang out with you, Freddy, John 1212 and all of my loved ones on the other side.
Until then, ILYF.
xoxo
