My brother Phil Zaret left this world 9 years ago today. Our loss, heaven's gain. Your exquisite messages about what he meant to you as his doctor, mean the world to his sister and to the rest of our family. My heart is filled with stories and memories of him that I will treasure forever. Like, as a teen, how he was always taking cars apart in the garage and not putting them back together. Like how, in high school, he set up a "radio station" in the basement to record my folk songs, him being the dj. Like him mimicking Indian and Chinese accents when it came time to order family takeouts. My brothers too can add their own memories. Please know every feedback from you is a treasure. Thank you for all you gave back to him as his patients. May your hearts heal and your memories of Dr. Zaret bloom in the years to come.

Dr. Zaret was a loving doctor who helped me, and many of us, get sober. I'm 10 years sober now, on my way to achieve a law degree, and I owe a big part of that to Dr. Zaret. He was a wonderful man.

Dr. Zaret was my addiction medicine physician about 15 years ago, and I have always had a soft spot for him because he was so clearly genuinely concerned for my well-being, as he was with all his patients. So much so that here in 2022, 15 years after I last saw him, I got the urge to look him up, and that´s how I found this obituary. I would love to be able to email or message someone who knows him well to find out how we was doing before he passed, what happened, etc. I always felt like his favorite patient, and I´m sure all of his patients felt that way because he was a truly great doctor, and a great person.

So many memories since we were childhood friends.Phil loved old cars and liked restoring them.We went to London Canada once to a farm where this farmer had old restored cars in a barn.It was amazing,we were looking at Packards from the 1930s the first Lincoln a Cord.I have to say looking back on that memory was incredible.
Phil also like to dabble with tuners and speakers even Ham radios and CB radios. We hitchhiked across country when we were 16 to California, that trip was comical. We took a life changing trip to NY where we were in a serious car accident.By all rights we should have died but miraculously we came out of it with only minor injuries. That event changed my life and Phil's along with Rick Owen.I can only say that made us realize we weren't immortal.
In later years Phil and I stayed in touch but he lived in L.A. and me in Tucson so only in voice such is life.I still find it hard to believe he is gone from this world but I believe I will see him again.
There are days i think about our friendship,he was after all my best friends in youth.I will never have a friendship like that again. When I see the movie STAND BY ME I see so many similarities to those days Phil and I shared.See you in the next life Phil, say hi to Zeke for me and your mom.

I think of Dr. Zaret everytime I see one of my current physicians and remember fondly the kindness, care and concern he always had for me and my family when we were patients. He as there when I had my first heart episode and was there when my Linda was sick. What is so unique about him was his bedside manner at the clinic and he always took time with each patient no matter how busy he was. A very special person.

I had the great honor of being the big/little sister to Phil, whom many people knew as Dr. Zaret. Through everyone's posts here, I'm still learning about my amazing brother and what a superior, caring doctor he was. He made the world, and my own heart, a better place. In one of our last visits, he said, "Good people go to a good place, don't they, Sis?" I replied, "And great people go to a great place." Love you, Bro.

I received a letter from Dr. Zaret's office a while ago saying he was retiring. It didn't say anything about his passing, which I just now found out about when calling the office to get my medical records. He's been my primary care physician for as long as I can remember, and I had a WONDERFUL relationship with him. I'm SO sad I didn't get a chance to say good-bye, so I'm doing so now to his family because I really feel like I need to do so to SOMEONE. You all have my condolences. He will be sorely missed.

Dr Zaret was my Dr for nearly 7 years. I owe my ability to walk to his swift accurate diagnosis of a herniated disc in 2011. Dr Zaret truly loved his profession. He stayed working for as long as he possibly could to server his patents. I already miss him. I know he was a husband, father, and a brother . My prayers are with the family. I truly enjoyed knowing this man.

I just recently stumbled across the fact that Dr. Zaret has passed. He was a great physician, and while I did not get to experience him as my personal physician, I was able to shadow from him and learn from him of how a physician ought to be. Now as I apply to medical school, I've been writing of my experiences and I specifically talk about the way Dr. Zaret has impacted my desires of wanting to be a physician. I wish I could tell you thank you again for all that you taught me. Rest well and thank you for your impact on this earth. My condolences to the family.

We so sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Zaret who was our family physician for over 20 years. He had the greatest of bedside manner and was more human than most. He saved my life when he recommended I go straight to the hospital suffering from a heart attack. His approach was so calm you would not know this was an emergency. The last time we saw him was in Old town Orange having dinner at our most favorite italian restaurant.
There is one less human being among us with his passing. He will always be remembered by us and members of our family.

Dr. Zaret provided compassionate care to my entire family for 29 years. He was truly the epitome of a "family doctor" in an age where medicine has become more and more impersonal and patients often feel like just another number. I'm saddened beyond words. His family has suffered a massive loss, and his patients have lost an ally and friend.

Dear Dr. Zaret's & Family,
My sincere condolences. Although, I just found out that you Dr. Phillip Zaret passed on. Not a day went by that I'd pray for a miracle to happen & you'd be better. History: I started seeing Dr. Zaret Jan. 2005, if not weekly it was for sure bi-weekly, for what I thought was Asthma. I had no insurance & I had 6 kids (started w/ 4 kids then 6,8, 11 & 13 & added 2 more now 5, 9, 18, 21, 23, & 24 yrs old)). It was extremely hard to find a good physician & trust they'll provide good medical care. Dr. Phillip Zaret you did indeed provide all that. The youngest knew you & how to get to your office. Many years you took care of my kids & I. I, as a mother & patient will forever be grateful that you were our family doctor, a great doctor. Our family will miss visiting you & It's okay. Because Dr. Phillip Zaret you are better..Dr. Zaret is with our Lord & that's the best place to be. He's alive in our hearts. God Bless you Dr. Zaret & Your Family today & always.
We all love & miss you,

Dr.Zarat might be the only person I've know as long as my parents. He's been my family doctor since long before I was born and my parents absolutely loved him. I can honestly say I consider him a friend.
When both of my parents were diagnosed with diabetes he was a comfort to me. I knew they were safe in his hands but he also took the time to talk to me about it, make sure I was okay, tell me about their treatment and preventative steps for me.
He knew about every single one of my major life events and asked about all of them. He celebrated with us he mourned with us.
And now we mourn for him. We mourn because we're all lucky enough to know someone so selfless and kind and the world is a dimmer place without him.
Take the time today and do something for someone else. Ask someone about their day, acknowledge why their special, offer help. Take the time today to memorialize him by carrying on his legacy of compassion for his fellow man and love for all.
My deepest condolences to his family, he is terribly missed.

Dr. Zaret was a remarkable man and an outstanding doctor. He is sorely missed. Our condolences, thoughts and prayers go to his staff, friends, and his family, whom he loved greatly. May God hold you in the palm of His hand. Words are inadequate to express the wonderful qualities Dr. Zaret brought to his profession: skill, knowledge, instinct and experience that helped so many to greater wellness; encouragement, patience, humor, attentiveness, and a calm positive demeanor that put patients at ease, despite our circumstances; a gracious and generous willingness to listen carefully, combined with the ability to truly "hear" us and understand, which led to many wise decisions and caring responses; and all this with a friendly smile and a welcoming good word! He was truly a gentleman in every sense. His humble service to so many will not be forgotten. He has saved lives and helped many on our way to better health and a brighter outlook. So many have said this already, and readers here know all this; but I wanted to affirm it and I needed to say it, to help me process this loss. Know that patients and even our pharmacy workers are mourning Dr. Zaret, and missing him so much! We share your tears. We thank God for Dr. Zaret; he was one of a kind.

I knew "Doc Zaret" had been ill, but with my past we talked about some of it. Doctor Zaret was my Doctor for many years and I feel a great sense of loss all the while knowing that his own own family is in their own time of mourning. I'll miss him greatly, he was a great doctor with a great sense of humor, a keen intellect and a thirst for the world around him. I loved talking politics and cars. I once asked him if he was a Vette or Cobra man and that answer was so fast and that grin told me all I needed to know.
We shared so much with our pasts, age and from where we came from. I can tell you this, he saved me in every way another human can save another and I already miss him so much. I can imagine the pain that his family is going through and I'll keep his family in prayer for healing and peace.
Kindest Regards,

To Dr. Zaret's family, my most sincere and deepest condolences and prayers that the Lord will comfort and ease your pain at this loss of your wonderful father and husband.
I first meet Dr. Zaret 20 years ago at Michaels in Buena Park. He was such a caring and warm person. Over the years, even when sick, I would look forward to seeing him. Talking about his cars, I would tell a few police stories for him to laugh at.
Later on when I had my children later in my age, he to said he could relate to my stories, difficulty and challenges and always had good advise. He always not only helped you heal, but made you FEEL better and at ease.
I am shocked and feeling a great loss as I just learned of his passing. May God bless you and keep you & your family in his loving arms.

I believe God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob created this planet and everything on it. There are no coincidences on His planet.
In 1996 I was searching for a doctor. I walk in his office on Beach Blvd with my wife and 3 kids. We were impresses by him right the way, but still wanted to look at more doctors. Two days latter my little girl had an asthma attack and i rush with her to emergency. They ignored me until my girl turn purple and i start making a huge scandal, finally the doctors panic and took care of her. Next day I went to Doctor Zaret for a follow-up. I told him what happened and he told me "Next time it happens bring Anna to me right the way and no matter how busy I am i will take care of her immediately". At that moment I knew he will be our family doctor. Later on, my youngest son Alex told me "Dad when I will grow up I want to be like Doctor Zaret", I advised him to let the doctor know at our next visit. The Doc was pleased and told him that he has to do good in school. My son finished Cal State Fullerton with Summa Cum Laude, shadow Doctor Zaret at his cabinet, the doctor give him a recommendation for his new school. My son starts his 3rd year at UC Irvine working on his PH.D.
Doctor Zaret took good care of my family for over 20 years. We all loved him.
Doc, I am not far behind you, I will see soon and we can talk again about Israel, Old Testament, etc. We won't talk anymore about politics, I believe this subject is irrelevant in haven...
God Bless Zaret family!

In a day and age when business men, including Doctors, are always putting the bottom line first, Dr. Zaret made you feel there was still hope. He treated me and my family as people, not clients. He was by far the best Doctor we ever had. We, although never having met with him socially, looked upon him as a friend. We will miss him very much. Our prayers go out for Dr. Zaret's family. We pray that God will bring them peace and strength as they go through this tragic time of heartbreak.
