Porter Echols, Jr. Obituary
Pete was born in Lynchburg, VA, June 6, 1933, to Porter and Hortense Echols. He graduated from E.C. Glass HS and attended the University of Virginia. He matriculated to medical school at UVA after three years of undergraduate study and received his medical degree in 1958. After an internship at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL and a residency at Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital in New York, NY, he returned to Lynchburg where he practiced ophthalmology from 1962 to 1995.
Pete is survived by his wife of 67 years, June W. Echols, daughter, Susan E. Vieth (Tom), daughter, Laura B. Echols, son, Burks Echols (Ann Carter), and granddaughters Carter and Sarah.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy; PO Box 807; Harpers Ferry WV 25425-9988 or the Blue Ridge Chapter National Railway Historical Society; PO Box 11731; Lynchburg, VA 24506.
A funeral service and celebration of life will be held at the family farm in Rockbridge County in spring 2024.

I met Pete in 1956 when June was my roommate in college at the UC. They got married when they graduated. June has continued to be my friend to this day. My sympathies to June and the family.

June and Family, I had the pleasure of working for Dr Echols from 1989 until 1992 when I started my family and decided to be a stay at home mom. He was always so very kind to his employees and such a great doctor ! Always enjoyed his stories of his hikes and camping trips. I am so glad that he lived a long life. My condolences to all of you. Dear Laura and family,
I am so sorry to hear of your dad´s passing. I became his patient at the age of 4. And while my appointments were " focused" on my vision, there was just " something" about your dad. I recall looking into his light eyes and seeing a well of kindness there.
