Preston Marsh Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 26 to Mar. 28, 2023.
Preston Howard Marsh, 55, of Mobile, Alabama and formerly of Medway, Massachusetts, passed away Saturday, 18 March 2023. The great grandson of civil rights leader Joshua A. Barney, Preston spent his earliest years in Sudbury, Massachusetts and was the son of the late Alphonso H. Marsh, Jr. and the late June E. Marsh. Preston, affectionately known as "Nya," was a true Renaissance man who excelled in a diversity of passions, including music composition, production and performance, computer information technology, multimedia design and electronics. His reach and impact across communities and musical genres was beyond compare. Preston also had a knack for applying engineering skills to set up solutions to everything from surveillance systems to fixing a leaky roof.

Preston's creativity and talents were clear from an early age in Sudbury. He excelled in music and the arts, and was a fixture in Medway High School's jazz and marching bands, as well as the school's orchestra and annual musicals.

Preston attended Howard University in the nation's capital, where he expanded his knowledge in electrical engineering and world affairs with a focus on the Black Experience. In 1986, he pledged and crossed into Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Inc. - the world's oldest and largest secret national fraternal society in music. His musical skills deepened in the Washington, D.C. scene, performing with artists like Teena Marie and in the group Word, as well as learning to play close to a dozen instruments in the genres of funk, rhythm and blues, rock and D.C.'s unique 'go-go' style.

In Washington, Preston also served as a contract management information systems developer and analyst for NASA's Minority University Research and Education Division. His launch into entrepreneurship began as CEO of his technology services start-up, Nile Valley Solutions, that morphed into BlackSalmon Productions - a digital music and multimedia design studio that marked its 20th anniversary this year.

In Mobile, he expanded his music career as well as his passion for community, which included tutoring school children and providing total quality management consultancy services to the YWCA USA. Preston taught music to Toulminville elementary school youth as part of the Legacy 166 program. Through his digital music studio, Preston produced and arranged songs for local and regional recording artists. For almost twenty years, he served as a musician for the Warmwood Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Alfred Goodwin and First Lady Janice Goodwin, and served as its music director for the last decade. Preston toured the Blues and Southern Soul circuits in America's southeast, and performed with bands and luminaries such as artist Jeff Floyd and artist Lebrado, as well as music groups House Quake, the Cedric Brooks Project, Sylvester Parsons' Powerhouse band, and Vernon Porter's group Emerge. Preston performed in concert festivals like Bayfest, Spring Fling and the City of Mobile New Year's Eve celebrations.

Preston's love for music was eclipsed only by his love for Carol, his partner of more than 14 years. An Alabama native, City of Mobile employee, and fellow member of the Warmwood Church choir, Carol took Preston's hand in marriage in July 2021.

Preston "Nya" Marsh is preceded in death by his parents Alphonso H. Marsh and June E. Marsh, and uncle Julius Marsh. He is survived by his wife, Carol Brown-Marsh of Mobile, Alabama, and brother Alphonso Van Marsh and Eugenia Harvey, brother-in-law Charles (Mary) Brown, goddaughter Savannah Sharp, nieces Isabella Brown and Carla Taylor, and his chosen family member Iya Olatunji. He also leaves behind several uncles, aunts, cousins, and many bandmates and friends.

A memorial service will be held at the Warmwood Missionary Baptist Church, 10251 McGehee Road, Grand Bay, Alabama, on Friday, 31 March 2023 at 11 a.m. (visitation, from 10 - 11 a.m.). The service will be streamed via Eternal Rest Funeral Home Services' Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/people/Eternal-Rest-Funeral-Home-Services/100032388746716/.

Attendees are invited to wear an element of purple, Preston's favorite color.

A wake will also take place at the Warmwood Missionary Baptist Church on Thursday, 30 March from 3-7 p.m.

A service in Medway, Massachusetts is being planned for late April.

First and foremost, my deepest condolences to Van, Carol, family and friends during this devastating time. My deepest thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Preston was my fellow Medway High School bandmate, confidant and dear friend. We shared a loving friendship and a special bond that spanned over 40 years and I will be forever grateful!

Preston parents were kind and both extremely intelligent. Their Mother June had a sweet, soft demeanor and it broke my heart when they lost her at such a young age.

Preston was such an inspiration to me and always believed in me in when I could not believe in myself. On the day of my High School graduation in 1984 while in the band room as I placed my trumpet in its case for the last time, Preston presented me with a dozen roses and expressed how proud of me he was. I will treasure that special moment in my heart and mind for always.

Preston and I were July babies and a year never passed that we woul not speak, sharing birthday sentiments and catching up on events that occured throughout the year which kept us both abreast on eachother's lives. Aside from our annual birthday greetings he would often call if a little homesick while at Howard or just for support or encouragement even while living in DC and later moving and settling in down in Mobile. I saw him evolve outside the confines of our little old town of Medway Massachusetts and I was always so proud of him and never failed to tell him so. When he shared with me the meaning and story behind his chosen name Nyabhingi Djehutti I was happy for him and his newfound pride in his African Roots and shared in it right along with him.

Preston was extremely brilliant in more ways than one and could talk circles around me if he chose to and yet whenever we spoke he remained humble and kind. We shared a mutual love and respect similar to one of a brother and sister appreciated encouragement, support and even the occasional kick in the butt through the years. I was and still am so very proud of his crudentials, accomplishments and everything in between and yet I am most proud of the soft spoken, gentle, kind, endearing and kind human being he was to me and I am sure to so many others.

I was most elated when Preston callec to share he was to be married. I have been happily married for 28 years and was so glad that he too had found his forever love!

Mere words will never express just how much Preston meant to me.
He was a vibrant beacon of light in my life. Heaven is a much brighter, beautiful and melodic place with him in it!

I will not say goodbye but rather so long for now my dear, beautiful friend until we meet again.

One Love,
Jackie

Dear Alphonso and Carol,
This is your 2nd cousin, Cynthia Barney Andrews in California. I was so sad to hear the news of the sudden loss of Preston. I share your grief and pain. I met Preston for the very first time in Mobile many, many, years ago when he was with his parents visiting his grandmother. Our family lived close by. I am glad that you posted the picture of him as a young boy in his obituary. This is how I remember him and this is the picture that I carry of him in my heart forever. I remember him having a very sweet and gentle spirit. When I look at him as a man today, I see that same sweet and gentle spirit in his eyes. I love him and I will miss him too. I am thankful for this memory and oh I wish that I had not allowed life and the miles between us interfere with building a stronger relationship. He is part of our family and I will always love him. My deepest heartfelt sympathy and love, Cynthia Barney Andrews

Preston was a great man and shared the same values I have. Because Preston was in the advanced academic classes and I was in the standard classes we didn´t have a lot of time together but I admire everything that he accomplished. The world needs to continue to grow and continue on the path Preston paved. God bless Mark Flanagan
