Preston Sanders Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 27, 2004.
Preston Lee Sanders, of Jacksonville, went to his heavenly home on March 27, 2004 at the age of 73. He was born April 5, 1930 in Morrilton, Arkansas to Claibourn Calhoun and Johnnie Margaret Sanders.

Preston graduated in 1950 from Little Rock High School. He was a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps and was an artillery gunner for the 4.5 Rocket where he served in the 1st Rocket Battalion “C” Battery during the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion.

Preston was a very proud member of the Wilson’s Tigers and actively involved in the “coffee cartel” which met on Wednesday mornings at Andy’s. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing, swimming and camping and his favorite hobby was his family. He enjoyed taking his entire family, sometimes as many as 22, on a yearly vacation to the beaches of Florida. He had an unbelievable will to live and more than once, outlived expectations the doctors had given him. Preston was retired from Arkansas Farm Bureau. He was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, but was also active in First Baptist Church of Gravel Ridge.

His son, Gary Preston Sanders, precedes him in death. Survivors include his children, Carol Ann King, Larry Alan Sanders, Lisa Louise Franks and husband Scott, and Michael Preston Sanders and wife Shannon; ten grandchildren, Shane Wammack and wife Sheila, David Summers and wife Joni, Lee Ann King, Laura King, Kody Sanders, Brandon Kittler, Chase Sanders, Carson Sanders, Megan Franks and Beth Franks; four great-grandchildren, Lane Preston Wammack, Haley Wammack, Autumn Summers and Ally Wammack; one brother, Sam C. Sanders; one sister, Helen L. Collier; and former wife and friend, Mary Ann.

A gathering of family and friends will be held in his honor from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Monday, March 29, 2004 at Griffin-Leggett-Rest Hills Funeral Home, 7724 Landers Road, North Little Rock, (501) 835-3515.

A celebration of his life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 30, 2004 At 1st Baptist Church of Gravel Ridge with Bro. Bill Harris and Bro. Paul Rice officiating. Interment will follow at Rest Hills Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Little Rock High School’s Wilson Tigers.

Memorials may be made in his honor to Baptist Hospice or the Arkansas Heart Association. To sign his on-line guest book, please visit www.griffinleggett.com.
