Preston Spear Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 8, 2025.
Preston O. Spear, born on January 29, 1943, in Sheridan, Indiana, passed away on February 21, 2025, in Seminole, Florida.

Preston dedicated his life to hard work and service. He spent years as a farmer before becoming a firefighter with the Lebanon Fire Department in Lebanon, Indiana. Later, he worked as a maintenance supervisor at the Diagnostic Clinic in Largo, Florida. His ability to fix just about anything was unmatched-his tool collection rivaled those of big-box stores, and if he didn't have the right tool for the job, he simply made one himself.

He had a deep love for the outdoors and enjoyed walking, yard work, target shooting, and even chatting with the crows-earning him the affectionate title of "The Bird Man of Seminole." His daily routine included riding his stationary bike, taking scenic car rides along the beach or through local parks, volunteering at church, dining out with family and friends, and striking up conversations with strangers.

Preston was a devoted husband to Jane (Bracewell) Spear for 47 years until her passing in 2012. He was a caring father to his three children: Tori Spear, Todd Spear, and John Spear. His kindness extended beyond his immediate family-he lovingly cared for both of his parents, Gilbert H. Spear and Opal M. (Brown) Spear, in their final days as well as his beloved wife during her illness.

A man of deep faith, Preston lived generously and compassionately. He now rests in the peace of his Lord Jesus. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.

I miss you buddy. I don't think you can ever find a finer person than Preston. He was a great husband, father, friend and neighbor. I never heard him say an unkind word about anything or anybody. He cared for his wife, my sister, with love and kindness when she became ill. I learned from watching him care for Jane and tried to emulate it when my wife grew sick and needed care. I miss getting pedicures with him then going out to lunch. He was a good man and a wonderful brother in law. I miss you buddy. RIP

Preston will be missed at FCCS. What a humble servant-spirit he demonstrated over the years picking up pine cones, hosting Sunday School classes, serving as Trustee, and more. Good ole Hoosier hospitality could always be found at the Spear's. Rejoicing for what he has gained by faith in Jesus even as we weep with the family as they grieve their loss.

Whenever I was doing some type of work at church, cleaning, cooking or fixing up the garden he would always stop by and ask me how I was. He was a great man who will be greatly missed. Bittersweet as always, but we know where he is.

Paula and I were saddened to hear of Uncle Preston's passing. But we were so thankful to be able to see him before he passed away. Uncle Preston, you were my hero firefighter. As a boy, I was proud to announce to friends my uncle was a fireman.

Later, when I found I owed my life to you when you warned Mom and Dad about the Palm Sunday tornado, my pride mixed with gratitude.

And when I saw the way you and Aunt Jane cared for Grandma and Grandpa in their final days, I knew you weren't just a hero, but a role model. I am so thankful to have the last name of Spear because of your example. You lived your faith and courage in innumerable ways.

One of the greatest and gentle human beings I have ever met, Preston was always happy to share a story about his family and life experiences. He lived for his kids, wife, and church. He worked hard at what ever task he took on. It was a honor to have known him and his family. Preston will be fiercely missed.

Dear Tori, John & Todd,

You are all in our thoughts and prayers as you go through this difficult time. Your Dad used to call me "Kenny". I loved that. He was such a pleasure to be around and talk to.

"No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him." 1 Corinthians 2:9

Preston loved the Lord and now he is in His presence. Wow!

With Much Love,

I love the memories I have of camping with our church family. I remember a bike ride that ended with Preston and Jake Boetger being chased by a raccoon. We also floated down the Rainbow River and had great camp fire conversations. To say he was a hard worker was a understatement. He did so much around the church. What a great example of a servant. He will be missed!! Praying for the family!!
