Rachel Sturz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 26, 2009.
Rachel Steinbeck Sturz Mrs. Rachel Steinbeck Sturz, 72, passed away Friday, July 24, 2009. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Homestead Memorial Gardens. Rachel was a humble, self-effacing Christian and her amazing life and accomplishments are credited to God. To Him be the glory for what He can do through a life yielded to Him. Rachel was part of the Steinbeck family, charter members of St. James United Methodist Church. She came to Christ in a Methodist Tent Revival at the age of 17. She was a former member of Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church where she directed the children's choir. She helped start the Peace Presbyterian Church and served as an Elder and choir director. She had participated in the operation of a telephone ministry and helped point many to Christ. As a homemaker, Rachel raised three children and kept her home always filled with lots of laughter and singing. She passed on her love of music to her son Justin and helped launch his career as an accomplished musician. Her daughter Arielle became, at the time, the youngest city council member in Greenville and now works in a large Washington, D.C., defense firm and is an excited mother-to-be. Her other daughter, Jensina, also of the Washington, D.C., area, is the office manager for her husband's construction company, and is also expecting a beautiful baby girl, Rachel Lee. Rachel was a graduate of both Greenville High School, Class of '55, and of East Carolina College, where she earned both her B.A. and M.A. degrees in business. In the early 60s, Rachel worked in Washington, D.C., serving as a page under John F. and Robert Kennedy for the House Un-American Activities Committee, investigating Jimmy Hoffa. After moving back to North Carolina, she served as the Assistant Dean of Women at East Carolina University for a year and a half and taught business classes at Mt. Olive College and Atlantic Christian College (now Barton). Rachel also enjoyed working part-time for 25 years as a bookkeeper at Steinbeck's Men's Shop for her dad and brother in addition to serving as a receptionist for Sturz Christian Counseling. In pursuit of her passion for music, she gave vocal concerts, conducted seminars on how to direct choirs for music teachers and directed a number of children's choirs in schools and in competitions, many winning first place. She taught both music and art for 25 years at Greenville Christian Academy and Trinity Christian School and taught private art lessons. For more than the past decade, she concentrated her musical love into conducting the Community Pop Singers. She enjoyed this activity with her husband who sang tenor and her son who is the group's accompanist. A self-taught and well-loved local artist, Rachel produced hundreds of beautiful paintings and drawings, which are displayed locally, across the nation and internationally. Rachel's Art Studio is a Greenville favorite. Rachel was a strong conservative Christian voice and was in the forefront of eastern North Carolina politics, partly through the influence of her dad, Frank Steinbeck Sr., who was active in politics in the 1950s as a Republican. She was past vice president and current secretary of the 3rd GOP Congressional District, and was involved in the Republican Women of Pitt County. She also served on the Central and the Executive Committee of the North Carolina Republican Party. Rachel helped start and direct the Conservative Arise Political Action Committee in Pitt County. She wrote publicity releases for the GOP, advised and encouraged many friends in political campaigns, served as treasurer for many candidates, and frequently wrote letters to the editor. Until the time of her death, Rachel enjoyed planning the arrival of her respective grandbabies with all three of her children and their spouses. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert Franklin Steinbeck and Freda Rohrbough Steinbeck. She is survived by her husband, Joe Sturz; son, Justin Sturz and wife Sarah of Greenville; daughters, Arielle Heffernan and husband Thomas, and Jensina Printz and husband Jim, all of northern Virginia; sisters, Loraine Searcy and husband Joe, of Halifax, and Jensina Sheppard and husband Maurice of Los Alamos, N.M.; and brother, Frank Steinbeck Jr. and wife Joyce of Greenville. The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Christian Action League, 809 Spring Forest Road, No. 1000, Raleigh, NC 27609-9147. Online condolences at www.wilkersonfuneralhome.com.

How I miss my little sweetie. I still miss her everyday. We shared so many trials and joys. She was a joy to live with even in the conflicts.
The Lord gave her to me as a gift for 42 years, the most precious gift I have had only superseded by His Saving my soul from sin and starting me on the way to heaven.
The Lord took her at the right time even though she was only 72 and He does all things well.
The Lord used her to bless so many people with her many talents. Especially her love for people and sharing over the telephone.
Her parents were constantly giving people and so was Rachel.

Dearest Mother, I miss you terribly! Its been a little over 6 months now and all 3 of your grand babies have been born. Arielle with Shiloh, me with Rachel Lee and Justin with Jason. They are simply beautiful mommy. I sit here and cry wishing I could talk to you on the telephone and ask your advice on what songs to sing to little Rachel what to do about her spit up, or her diaper rash, or what to fix for dinner tonight but you are no longer there. I have saved all of the voice mails on both my home phone and cell and play them weekly just to hear your Eastern Carolina voice. I loved it when you called me your baby, the best surprise you ever had, and your precious or your my tall drink of water. I miss it when you described me to your new acquaintances of how I looked just like you - tall and blond! Oh mom, I miss you so much and I love you. When my job is done here on earth we shall meet again in Heaven. Until then, I will carry on the Sturz torch in my new Printz family. The torch of loving Jesus more than anything else, adoring and honoring my sweet husband no matter what, singing to my kids and cultivating a home of love and conservative political talks like you did dearest mom. Fox News, The Eagle Forum, Human Events, IMPRIMIS, and lets not forget NetFlix- are all being implemented in our household this day. Thank you so much for giving me a structure for motherhood! Loving you always, your baby, Jensina

Brother Joe,

Everything I have and everything I enjoy today, including my very life, is due to the kindness of others. In fact, every happiness there is in the world arises as a result of others’ kindness.

In the late, 70s you and Rachael were that kindness for me. I had nothing to offer you except a broken life. You offered me you love, your home, and your family.

I’m fond of the old saying “When one door closes, another door opens.” It’s often true; but it is also almost impossible to think of, let alone believe, when wrestling with the shock and initial stages of major change. That’s the time when life is at its bleakest and everything looks hopeless. However, when I look back on your kindnesses, the changes—and losses---I’ve was going through, I see that even though I gave up many things or many things were taken away from me at the time your kindnesses made all the difference.

Ilove you brother Joe.

Rachel was a dear friend to me over the past 15 years and our entire family was heartsick to hear of her passing.

She was a truly wonderful woman that meant so many things to so many people.

I cannot express enough how much her friendship and encouragement has meant to me over the years. Rachel always made me feel like a part of the family.

Our hearts and prayers go out to all of those that share this loss and may we all give thanks for the time we did have to share with Rachel.

May Angels lead her in to be with our Lord.

Dear Family:

Lilith and I were very shocked this morning to hear of my cousin Rachel's passing. With our families scattered so much across this great land, it has been hard to visit with everyone. We do remember visiting in Greenville several years back with Uncle Frank and Aunt Freda and other members of the family. We had a wonderful time. Our hearts are heavy with this news of Rachael. All of you will be in our prayers and thoughts. My memories of years gone by include the summers when all of our parents (my mother, Aunt Freda, Uncle Virgil,Aunt Bayrene, Aunt Maxine, & Aunt Vivian and Uncle Dewey) with their spouses and all their children (us cousins), would gather at the Rohrbough farm on the West Fork River and have a dinner and then home made ice cream and watermelon. We had loads of fun at those gatherings. I will always appreciate Rachel's art drawing of the farm house. I also, have an 8 x 10 picture of the farm that was taken from across the rever. That is now all gone as the Stonewall Jackson Dam and recreation area has taken over. The last time we saw Rachel and Joe was at the cousin gathering in Weston a few years back. We will be thinking of each of you in the coming days and months. With God's love and help all these things will come to pass. Rachel has been welcomed by her mother and father. May the Lord's blessing, spirit and blessing be with all of you is my greatest desire.

With Love,

Lilith and Gerald

I was taken aback of Rachel's passing. I remember her when I was a child and I heard her beautiful voice everyday. She is part of my childhood memory book and will always be in my memory. She is now in the Lord's Choir above looking down on all of us.

Our family, and our Wayside Presbyterian Church family, will greatly miss our sister in Christ. Rachel has been used by God in the lives of many. She has, indeed, been an inspiration to us and so many others. My appreciation goes out to the top-notch medical staff that did everything possible to help. We know, however, our God is in control. Rachel is loved by God, and she will love Him forever more. We thank our Lord Jesus for His goodness to us, and we pray for the family members who remain, as they will greatly miss this woman of God!

We are shocked and very saddened to hear of the passing of Rachel Sturz. I lost my mother last Saturday and today I mourn the passing of a good, good friend. Miss Rachel was a dear saint of God who inspired me every time I saw, spoke, or received an email from her. She had strong godly principles and consistently modeled Christ in all that she did. Mr. Frank Steinbeck was SO proud of his daughter! If she were here, she would remind us that we are not to sorrow as the heathen do for we have a hope eternal, born of God; "an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens." Despite this Blessed Hope, we still mourn her passing howbeit knowing, for her, she has just graduated to a place she loved with all her heart (heaven) to be with the Person she has loved since childhood, Jesus. I would not wish her to return to this painful world for anything, although we who remain behind will miss her so. I desire to be with her and will be in the not-so-distant future.

Much love to Mr. Joe, who depended upon her so, and to her son and daughters. Our tears join yours as we celebrate the home-going of our friend and sister in Christ. We miss her already!

To God be glory and majesty forever! We loved her so!
