Ralph, in retirement, called himself the Foreman of the Bar Key Ranch. He took good care of all the cowboys and cowgirls on and off the Ranch and made us all who were lucky enough to know him better people. Rest in peace, Ralph.

I only had the opportunity to have contact with Ralph twice subsequent to his marriage and departure from Laramie in the early 50's. Once he and Diane came to Calgary and we visited briefly at the hotel where they were staying on the day before they left. The second time was at the Kaycee RV Park shortly after Diane passed. I was impressed at how healthy and active he was at that time. Rest in peace, Uncle Butch.

Ralph, Diane, Leslye, and John lived in Santa Barbara before we moved there when we were all young. I loved having cousins in the same town, and always enjoyed the times our families got together. I also remember all the UCSB basketball games we got to go to and getting to sit right behind the players during the game. Ralph was such a kind man in the way he treated everyone, no matter who they were. He loved his career in basketball, but loved his family most of all. He will be missed by many, but has left an indelible print on the heart of anyone who was lucky enough to know him.

The Barkey's were our neighbors in Goleta in the 60's. I remember attending a Gaucho's game during that time. My mother and his wife Diane were friends and I recall Ralph as a kind and friendly man. His daughter Leslye and I were in the same grade. Thoughts and prayers for the family in their time of loss.

I met Ralph in June of 1963. I had just left Atlanta and enrolled in college at UCSB's summer session in his golf PE class. I was struck by his warmth and pleasant demeanor. Here I was, a black person in an all-white setting for the first time, and he made me feel welcome. That, I will never forget. I graduated from UCSB in 1985, and Berkeley Law in 1969. My wife Birdie worked with Diane at UCSB and also enjoyed the experience. I recall my pleasant time in SB and the friends, including Ralph, I met there.
Very truly yours,
