Randal Lee Obituary

Published by Houston Chronicle on Aug. 27, 2013.
Randal Mark Lee, was born October 28, 1949 to Bonnie Daniel Lee and Herbert Lee in Port Neches, Texas. He passed away in Houston, Texas on August 24, 2013. He was 63. He graduated from Port Neches-Groves High School in 1968 where he was All State MLB. Randy was highly recruited by numerous universities and ultimately decided to accept a scholarship offer from Rice. After achieving academic and athletic successes, Randy graduated from Rice in 1972 with a degree in business commerce. Randy and a few of his football buddies formed the Annual Full Moon in 1976. This group of Rice teammates just celebrated their 38th annual reunion and has grown to nearly 40 members.
He met the love of his life, Donna Johnson, while still in college in 1969. They married in 1971 and celebrated their 42nd anniversary together last May. Donna and Randy were blessed with two wonderful sons, Mark Nathan and Christopher Reid. Randy was a devoted husband and father who had many passions that he was able to share with his family. He derived great joy from watching his sons participate and achieve success in their various activities. There was no doubt that Randy was extremely proud of the men his boys became. Mark and his wife, Kim, further blessed him with three grandsons, Jackson, Austin and Mason. As a proud grandfather, Randy was given another opportunity to experience the joy of watching the next generation of his family grow.
Randy went to work after college at American General Insurance Company which began his long and accomplished career in the insurance business. He joined the Swantner & Gordon Insurance Agency in 1976, managing the Beeville, Texas branch until relocating to the main office in Corpus Christi, Texas. He became the managing partner of Swantner & Gordon in the mid 90s and under his guidance the agency grew into one of the largest independently owned agencies in the country. Randy championed the effort to merge Swantner & Gordon with Higginbotham & Associates in 2010 and continued to run the agencies as managing director of South Texas operations.
Randy was a true friend, never met a stranger, was the first to lend a helping hand and touched the lives of all who knew him. He was involved in numerous organizations including Tejas Vaqueros, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and the "R" Association to name a few. Due to his level of commitment, Randy always seemed to find himself in a leadership capacity. He served as a director of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, a Maverick Mother and Vice Presidente of the Tejas Vaqueros. His support of these organizations led to his tremendous extended family and many "friends for life".
Randy is preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Bonnie Lee. Family members that are left to treasure his memory are his wife, Donna, sons Mark Nathan Lee and his wife, Kim of Missouri City, Texas and Christopher Reid Lee of Los Angeles, California and three grandsons, Jackson Grady Lee, Austin Mark Lee and Mason Randal Lee. He also leaves behind two brothers, Danny Lee (Linda) of Rockport, Texas, Kent Lee of Port Neches, Texas, father-in-law M.O. (Jack) Johnson of Houston, two brothers-in-law, Rod (Karen) Johnson of Houston, Texas and Rick (Lorraine) Johnson of Houston, Texas and many nephews and nieces.
A Visitation will be held at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway Houston, TX 77079 on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 from 6-8 PM. A Funeral Service will be held at Chapelwood United Methodist Church 11140 Greenbay Street Houston, TX 77024 at 10:00 AM on Thursday, August 29, 2013 followed by burial at Memorial Oaks Cemetery 13001 Katy Freeway Houston, TX 77079. Those carrying Randy to his final resting place include his sons Mark and Reid, and his nephews James Daniel Lee, Michael Glenn Lee, Brian Joseph Lee, Brandon Dean Johnson, Ryan Logan Johnson, and Jarod Keith Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Rice Football Extra Point Club, 6100 Main Street MS-552 Houston, TX 77005 or the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, PO Box 20070 Houston, TX 77225-0070 in Randy's honor.

Randy was kind, thoughtful, considerate, a TRUE friend, a man of integrity & character, a fierce competitor, athletic, fun, smart & totally devoted to his family. He has left a void in the hearts of all who knew him & for me one that no one will ever be able to fill. I will always miss & love my forever friend & I would say well over 700 people felt the same way as I do. I was in awe at how many lives Randy touched & touched so deeply. You, Mark, & Reid remain in my prayers.

I am a friend of Reid's from Los Angeles. I truly feel for the family and feel sorrow and empathy for your loss. I lost my 78-year old father in July 2012 and there isn't a day goes by that I don;t feel the colossal loss of having Daddy in my life. So, I offer my profound sympathies to reid and his entire family.

Randy, as they are carrying you on your last earthly journey, I sit here on the mountainside and reflect on the 40 years you have been in our lives, as I had done on Sat morning while going thru old photos. I first met you as an energetic rookie field agent with American General Insurance with the sparkling Donna at your side. Since then, you have become a very proud father and grandfather, and risen to the top of your industry while remaining loyal to friends, family and your personal interests. Thank you for giving us your love, support and friendship during glad and sad times. Thank you for givng us Donna and our precious godsons, Mark & Reid and all the special times spent with the Johnson-Lee clan. Randy, you didn't finish your story when last we met, so I look forward to the day when I can hear the rest of the story. Until we meet again my friend, Vaya con Dios. Sharlene Jordan

Donna and family,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I am an underwriter for AIG and had the pleasure of working with Randy for a few years. Randy was always very kind towards me and always let me know he appreciated my work. I can see that he generated a particular kind of magic in his many passions in life. I was told yesterday that Randy treated his employees as if they were family, what a legacy. My thoughts and my prayers will continue to be with you, please keep looking up towards heaven and at night just remember, he is now a twinkling star always loving you and watching over you.

Donna and Children
Pennie and I are sad for the loss of Randy.
Believers Who Have Died

13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord's word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.

Donna we were so sorry to hear about Randy. Charles & I ran into him in Corpus about a month ago he said all of you were meeting at the coast for some family time. Am so happy that you had this time together. I still remember, and laugh, when I think about Randy giving Melissa fatherly advice when he would bring her home from baby sitting Mark & Reid. By the way he did a good job helping us raise her as she is a great daughter and mom herself. Please know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. God Bless you the boys and Randy.

Randy's passing was one of the saddest days of my life. Words cannot express how sorry I am for Donna, Mark and Reid. They will forever be in my thoughts. Randy was a cherished lifelong friend for almost 50 years, beginning with the forging of our friendship on the PNG practice field and continuing to end. I was truly blessed having him as a friend for life. Although time often separated us for a while we were always able to pick up right where we left off. Randy and Donna always made time for a vist when I would be in Corpus. In life Randy cast a long shadow. His absence will leave a void in my life and many others. I will miss you dearly ole friend. While your being may be gone your presence in my heart and others will be forever. Keep the campfire going and the beans on until we meet again.

Sadly,

Donna, I am so sorry to hear about Randy's passing. I know what you are going through and am praying for you, Mark, Reid and other family members. Randy was a great man, and I considered him to be a good friend. Maybe he and Howard can get together over a scotch in Heaven and talk about "everything", as they did so many times.

August 27, 2013

Dear Ones, I was so sorry to hear of your loss. Randy was a very special man. I have known him through his father Herb since he was a boy. The Lee family will always have a special place in my heart. With deep sympathy, Andrea Johnson

There are few clients who are also friends, and Randy was both to me. We had great business together and shared our involvement with HLSR. He called me last Thursday to have lunch and we missed each other, saying we'd get together soon. This is nothing different than we all do at times, but I can't get that chance back again. Lesson learned. Godspeed my friend, and I'm sure you and Howard are sharing a scotch about now.

Dear Donna, Mark & Reid,
I know you have lost your "rock". Randy is one of the most generous and amazing men I have ever met. He was involved in so many things and organizations but yet always found time for his family.
I always looked forward to rodeo time so we could all spend time at the cook-off and so I could get big bear ((hugs))) from Randy. They don't make very many men like Randy!
I am 100% sure Jay was the first one to greet him smiling from ear to ear and telling him "So glad to see you brother!"
Randy & Donna have always been like a brother/sister to myself and my siblings. We will really miss him.

We ?love? all of y'all may God give you comfort during this hard emotional time of void and loss.

Dear Donna, Mark, and Reid - I can not begin to tell you how saddened I am at your loss. However, I know that Randy was a great dad and wonderful husband. I know he touched so many lives in so many ways and I, for one, will greatly miss him. When I think of Randy, I think of him as always smiling and quiet but strong. I cry for you, but God was ready for him to come home. We can't understand, but trusting in God and having a relationship with God will eventually provide comfort. Our relationship with God will allow us to be with him again. May God bless you and surround you with his arms of love as we all grieve this loss of a truly great man. I love and miss you all. My prayers will be with you during this difficult time.

All my love,

It is difficult to describe the sense of loss at the news of Randy Lee's passing. He leaves behind a legacy that looms large over the many lives that he touched. As his former employee I had the privilege of learning from him. One of the many things that he taught me was that the best things in life are not things. It's so sad, we have lost a one of a kind treasure, a gentleman cowboy. Randy Lee was a man of integrity, he loved his family proudly and cared for his friends and colleagues genuinely.
Donna, my thoughts and prayers are with you and the family. May all of your wonderful memories help sustain you. God bless.

Randy was one of a kind. A gentle giant who would do anything for anybody at any time. He demonstrated this time after time on our Tejas Vaquero's annual trek.
