Randall Mangum Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 24, 2019.
Randall (Randy) Mangum, age 59, went to be with Jesus on Monday, June 24, 2019. Randy was born March 1, 1960 in LaSalle, Illinois. While he lived in many places during his lifetime, some of his favorite memories were made during his time spent in Panama during his childhood. He moved to San Antonio in 1979 and began working at USAA. It is here where he would eventually meet his wife Sandra. If our life is measured by how much we give, Randy's life overflowed. He was a man who gave everything for everyone. He was a man with endurance who was known for his commitment. From starting in the mailroom at USAA at 19 years old, to becoming a director by the end of his 40 year career. A husband of 31 years. A dedicated, steadfast and affectionate father. A mentor and friend to all. He was a rare combination between the life of the party and knowing what was most important in life—his family, his work and his friends. He loved going to Spurs and Cowboys games, spending a day at the pool with his family, spending a day grilling and celebrating a holiday with his friends. He will be missed deeply by many for his fun-loving personality and his generous heart. Randy will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Sandra Mangum, daughters, Katelyn Darley (Chris) and Sarah Wallin (Paul), his mother Jean Gallegos, his sister Raye Anne Hawkins, and his nephews Ryan Randall Hawkins (Gina), Brenton Mangum (Nicole), and Nick Mangum. He will also be remembered by his great nieces and nephew Adriana Hawkins, Alana Hawkins and Ryan Randall Hawkins, Jr. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., Thursday, June 27, 2019, at Porter Loring Mortuary North ROSARY THURSDAY, JUNE 27, 2019 6:00 PM PORTER LORING MORTUARY NORTH SERVICE FRIDAY, JUNE 28, 2019 11:15 AM CORNERSTONE CHURCH – VADA HAGEE PRAYER CHAPEL Pastor Boots Levine will officiate. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery at Cordi-Marian In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association (http://www2.heart.org/goto/randallmangum) or the American Cancer Society (in memory of Randy's late best friend, Dale Neese).

I am so sorry for your loss. I have known Randy professionally for over 15 years. He was a very kind and loyal man. The first half of every conversation we ever had was always about family, but he was also incredibly dedicated to his P&C work at USAA. Sandy, Katie and Sarah, I hope you will take comfort in all of your wonderful memories and know how proud he was of you and all of your accomplishments. He will be missed.

Sandra, Katelyn, and Sarah, my condolences on the loss of your husband and dad. Randy and I worked together at USAA for many years and as we all know, he was larger than life. He was so competitive and funny and always, always, willing to face a challenge without flinching. While he was booksmart, he was entertaining and peoplesmart. I would often marvel when I saw him energize countless groups; Randy had a statement to make that encouraged others to listen, whether it was when he walked into a meeting or onto a basketball court. I have so many fond memories of Randy, especially those related to our basketball encounters every day.
Randy moved up the chain and gained friends and admirers in the process. I remember working with him in After Hours where he was a Data Specialist and then a Manager and then he moved to staff. He handled difficult and serious situations with finesse and gravitas. He always said the right thing and additionally, had a positive statement to make. Randy cared for all managers, coworkers, employees, and, yes, even less athletically gifted basketball players.
Randy was a statesman, a worker in the trenches, a colleague, a friend, a leader, a brother, an athlete, a great man. He had boundless confidence, a ready smile and a terrific delivery of his wisecracker wit. He was resilient, flexible and tenacious. Randy has left so many great indelible memories; I know that I will not be the only one to miss him but that is only because of the impact he had on so many of us.
I apologize for the lateness of this eulogy, I just found out.

Randy - what a hole you left in the world man! I so enjoyed our locker talk at the gym talking about cruises, your daughters football games, pulling the trailer, etc..... God only lets the best of the best slip out like you did but man it was way too early! Family - I never met you but I feel like I know you from all the talks Randy and I had about how much he loved you all and how proud he was! The world is a little less interesting without him here but what a great legacy he has left behind. Randy - RIP brother and I miss you my friend!

My deepest condolences, knew Randy from playing basketball at USAA for many years until an injury stopped him from playing ball, I'm sure he missed it daily. Quick story; He would step behind the 3 point line wipe his hands on his face and then look at you in the eye and make that 3 point shoot. Loved his great personality and giving person. Your family will be in our thoughts and prayers. Humberto

Randy was a great man, a wonderful mentor who cared deeply for his employees almost as much as he loved and adored his wife and daughters. He emulated work/life balance and represented a male role model we could all aspire to be. I miss you my friend.

Randy was the one person I could go to at USAA if I wanted to geek out about something new in the insurance industry. So much incredible knowledge in that man and I always loved hearing his perspective. My deepest sympathies to Sandy and his girls.

Sandra, Katelyn, and Sarah, my sincere sympathies for your loss. I met Randy through our mutual involvement in The Society of Insurance Research (SIR) and we were working closely together in planning the upcoming annual conference - speaking, emailing and texting frequently each week. There are few people I have met that love the insurance industry more than I. Randy was one, and that is why I enjoyed our friendship and work together. I will miss Randy very much.

The measure of a man's life is the well spending of it, and not the length. (Plutarch)
My dear friend of many years in our professional pursuits knew well the spending of it. Regaling with stories of the youth volleyball games of Katie & Sarah, of days spent with Sandy lugging the boat and assorted kids to and from the lake (and all the mechanical issues associated ;-}, of his pride in all things family. Telling were his sincere rhetorical questions about what fate had delivered to him such a loving and wonderful family and in response his passion for them. In a strange way, Randy brought his enthusiasm, wit (I'm being kind here) and passion to a second family those with whom he shared a profession and a career. To this second family, Randy offered his energy, enthusiasm and intellect but more deeply, his affection and sincere concern. There were no limits to Randy's spending of it with abandon in all things. With his passing, each of us in some way will miss that spot in our lives that was Randy, but we will rejoice in his life and the way in which he chose to spend it with us. To Katie, Sarah, Sandy and the entire family, my heartfelt condolences and a big thank you for letting Randy spend some of that precious time with us.

I was so sad to hear about the passing of my friend Randy. I met Randy working at USAA and found him to be an incredible person. He spoke so often of his amazing daughters and loving wife. He always had his priorities straight and put his family first. At work he was an incredible resource and sounding board who helped me during my early years as I was learning to navigate the water at USAA. As our career paths took us in separate directions I would periodically reach out to him and ask for help. He was always quick to support and eager to provide his point of view. I will miss him and his amazing spirit. My most sincere condolences go to his wife and daughters. Please know that he always spoke of you all in the most amazing way! He loved you all fiercely and was so incredibly proud.

To Randy's Family, I am so sorry for your loss but know that your comforted my so many wonderful memories of a life well lived and with the knowledge that Randy will be looking over you from heaven. I knew Randy for most of his nearly 40 years working at USAA, working with him in the mail room and in his role performing competitive analysis in P&C. Randy was always passionate about what he believed to be true, kind to everyone, and oh so fun to work with. Thanks for sharing Randy with us, his family at USAA! May he Rest In Peace!

I got to know Randy through our involvement in the Society of Insurance Research. He was a remarkable human being with the most loving and generous heart. His personality was infectious. Randy met my daughter last year in New Orleans and treated her like one of his own girls. While we all mourn the loss of this great man, we know he is looking down on us. He has left an indelible mark on this earth and his light will forever shine. God bless you my dear friend.

I served with Randy in USAA's competitive intelligence community and on the Society of Insurance Research Board of Directors. He was a leader in every sense of the word. His passion was infectious. He was always the consummate professional. He was a mentor to many and he leaves a great legacy. He never did anything halfway and he always gave it his all. If you knew Randy, you knew how much he loved his wife Sandy and his daughters as he spoke of them proudly at every opportunity. Randy had so much left to give but we're all better for knowing him. Rest in peace Randy. My condolences and prayers to your family.

A bright star on earth whose glow will now be forever held in our hearts. Thank you for your kindness and friendship over the last 20 years, especially when we all got to see each other during the S.I.R. events. They felt more like fun reunions than conferences. Fond memories. Wishing your family peace in faith.

Randy was my coworker and friend. He loved his wife and daughters so passionately and was a shining example of a loyal family man and hard worker. He made me laugh every day when we worked on the same team, and he always brightened my day with his smile and dimples. My deepest condolences to the family he loved so much. Randy taught me what it meant to be a bright spot in people's day at work.

To Sandra, Katelyn, and Sarah: I'm really sorry and saddened to hear of the sudden loss of your beloved husband and father. As I was informed of his death, it brought back memories of the sudden deaths of my mom and dad 33 years ago. When something like this happens, it's natural to ask why, perhaps feel angry that he was taken away so early, and feel the hurt of his loss for quite a while (especially during upcoming holidays and birthdays). I'm hoping though that the love and support of family and friends and remembering all the good times you shared over the years will provide you with the strength and comfort you need to help you through this difficult time.
Sincerely, Steve Micksch, fellow SIR Board Member

I am so sad to hear about the loss of such a great person. It's rare to find someone like Randy. Our daughters, Shelby Baumann and Katy, were great friends since elementary school. Shelby loved Mr.Randy. I think he filled the gap that her dad left after he passed. I will always be grateful to Randy for treating her like a daughter. You will be missed Randy- the world lost a great guy.
