To the Yamamoto Family: The morning after Randy passed away I began to write a song, almost the instant I learned the news. I truly loved Randy for all he was, and I called him 'brother,' echoing what so many feel. Yet, yesterday I ran some of it by someone who said, 'he was an only child.' I know that, which makes this even harder. Yet, he was such a trooper and I know there is some sense to all this even if it's hard to see. So I rewrote the word 'brother' as 'comrade' which might be more fitting, if less confusing. Here are the lyrics. I have to record it and as soon as I do I'll send it. Randy will always remain a cherished and beloved part of my life because he really was a brother. As the song says...
I Will Remember You by Ardene Shapiro

The biggest heart is one that's strong
No matter how weak, no matter how long
I saw your light in the bleakest night
It told me I could do anything
Chorus: I, I will remember you
You're in my DNA
A map that leads the way
I, I will remember you
Husband, comrade, father, friend,
Son, disciple, purpose without end.
Had a light tough, always made us smile
It didn't take much, that was just your style
The rarest jewel illuminates the beholder, too
Chorus
Bridge: Everything that happens must lead to happiness/I know you heard every single word I left unsaid
Chorus
Tag: Now I stand up in your stead
Friend, disciple, purpose without end/without end/without end/without end.

Dearest Shinobu, Ashley and Justin and Mr. & Mrs. Yamamoto:
It is with a very heavy heart that I am writing this. I am so sorry that it has taken me a long time to write a message to you but it just didn't seem real.
We were very fortunate to have had a chance to meet him when he was in Toronto earlier this summer. Randy always had a smile and kind words to say and he was so very gentle. We will always remember him enjoying our get togethers and talking about how great all the food was.
A very kind, funny, spiritual soul - Randy was more like family than friend.
Our deepest condolence to you and your family. Please give your children a big hug for us.

Dear Randy,
I remember the young men's Caledon conferences when you were always the last one to go to sleep, talking and joking around with old friends and new in the multi-purpose room. You made everyone laugh with your excellent female impersonations on culture nights.
Later, I was so encouraged by your example and compassion as young men's leader. It was always so great tohave you visit the young men in Montreal.
More recently, we saw each other at the family conferences where you were always present to make sure everything was ok.You will always be an inspiration to me, taking care of everyone and every problem quietly, with no big fuss, with a warm smile.
The other day it occurred to me as I was feeling so sad about your passing, that you lived a life of absolute victory, showing us all how to support Kosen Rufu, literally, at each moment, with each person we are with.
Thank you for everything. I am sending daimoku to your family...

Dearest Randy,
You are one of the most genuine and sincere people I have had the fortune to meet and learn from. I will forever cherish our experiences as youth division leaders, our late night shenanigans at CEC, and or kenshu training trips. Your humility and consideration shine above all. You have worked so hard for Kosen rufu and enabled the tremendous growth of the youth in Canada. Now is the time for you to rest at Eagle Peak, only to return to work for Kosen rufu once again when the time is right. Randy, you will be forever missed. I will chant for your peaceful repose, and for the strength and happiness of your family. Thanks for everything you have done for all the members in SGI Canada.

Dearest Randy,
A cornerstone of Canadian and global kosen rufu, you live in me as I vow to transform my own character so I can learn from your calm generousity, the source of which is Sensei's heart and your own wonderful family, whom I am chanting very hard for, as I am for you. Now it's my turn to be there for you, and reading all these messages, it's clear that you were consistent as your brilliant attitude, dedicated ethic and smile. I wrote a song for you on Sept. 17th called "I Will Remember You," and at the Toronto memorial yesterday, people again and again uttered this phrase. The last part of the chorus goes, "Husband, brother, father, friend, son, disciple, purpose without end." I hope you know how profoundly you are loved and treasured. The shock waves caused by your hasty departure will reverberate in our lives forever teaching us to believe in the power of daimoku because that is your life and legacy. I am better for having worked with you behind the scenes for the better part of more than two decades. I did my White Lily shift today (daytime reception), for the first time in like, 15 years, I didn't see or talk to you. How grateful I am to have known you. My love to Shinobu-son, and the entire family. You are as usual, ahead of the curve because as devastating as this is (and I can't imagine how hard it is for the Yamamoto family), you are showing us the map as one of Sensei's truest disciples. Your humble yet giant heart and spirit will always further kosen rufu wherever you are. Love Ardene

My dearest Randy,
Gentle, funny, strong, inspiring, and courageous Randy. I will treasure the memories we had in our youth division days and how you always encouraged me in every situation. There was never anything that was too hard to resolve for you. I am so fortunate to have known you in this life time. You were the pillar to so many.
I will miss you, but I know this is not goodbye. We will meet again to work for kosen-rufu very soon.

Dear Randy,
You will be missed tremendously. While I'm deeply saddened that you are gone. I'm so fortunate to have met you in my life and to have worked closely with you for Kosen-rufu. You are the greatest example of dedication, sincerity and you have the biggest heart so pure. I will always remember you as the gentle giant, wise, calm, so funny who loved to sing and make us laugh. You have such a great sense of humour and your patience and your ability to bend over backwards to take care of anyone, anything at any hour were truly an inspiration. I will miss calling you Randor and seeing you at Caledon. But trust that we are always together through daimoku and every time I will visit Caledon I will feel your spirit. I promise to do my best for Kosen-rufu and realize our noble vow. I am forever grateful for your trust and belief in me and all the ways you supported me as a youth leader and to develop into a better human being. I will never forget the way you would be moved to tears every time you would read a message from Sensei. Thank you Randy for everything, I will send daimoku to you and your family. My most heartfelt condolences to Shinobu,Ashley,Justin and family.
I will do my best to advance joyfully in life in the spirit of our mentor and in your honour to never give up.

I met Randy for the first time in 1984 when he was in the brass band in Vancouver. He was always such a loveble, kind and cheerful person who seemed to really have other people's best interests in mind. His wonderful presence at Caledon was really taken for granted by me and I'm so grateful to have known him and today at the Ottawa SGI Centre we chanted and told loving stories about precious Randy.

Trust" is the consummate treasure. Leaders should capture people's hearts with sincerity and trustworthiness(Daisaku Ikeda). Randy's kind patient manner perfectly exemplified this guidance. Those of us who knew him filled the culture centre today, standing together in fondness for Randy and regret for his loss. Randy did more to bring out people's humanity in 48 years than others would do in 1000.
Shinobu and family, please accept my condolences.

Cher Randy,

Dear Randy,
Every memory I have of you is of you working so hard for the members behind the scenes at Caledon. You are a true example of a great individual, YMD, and SGI Canada Member.
I remember our last conversation at Caledon so vividly, not too long ago. You had shared with me your thoughts on how wonderful it be if your children could receive Soka Education. You had asked whether Japanese was necessary to study at my school (Kansai Soka), and if we provided dorms.
I will work tirelessly for the sake of Kosen Rufu and Soka Education with you always at heart, because I know your true victory depends on how we continue to live on your behalf.
Thank you so much for all the wonderful memories you have created for us. I promise you will continue to live in our hearts and shine through our actions.

Wonderful Randy! We knew you as a young boy in the Brass Band (big guy, with a big smile on the big drum), hanging out with the Mayede boys and Nori Shirakabe. (Lots of high jinks!) Working with your Mom and Dad, you were an absolute piller in the SGI. The Yamamotos were missed when they moved to Caledon, but we were all so proud of the work that you were doing for Kosen Rufu. After that only an occasional glimpse of you, here and there, working diligently behind the scenes, always smiling. You will always be in our hearts, remembered in our daily prayers. Randy, forever we will remember your most refreshing and welcoming smile when we arrived at Caledon so many times. We always felt your sincerity touching our hearts so completely and helping us feel so at home and at ease. We felt completely supported by your confidence, composure and continuous efforts behind the scenes to ensure our happiness. Our hearts ache at losing you so suddenly and we are chanting daimoku for you and your family every day. When I joined in Vancouver in 1974 there were only two districts. I'm sure I met you for the first time as a three year old, but it wasn't until Caledon we got to know each other better. We didn't realize until now that your middle name is Junichi -- the same as our son Philip's. We deeply appreciate all of your friendship and encouragement over the years and will strive for kosen-rufu with your shining example in mind. With our deepest respect,

I have only the best memories of Randy and his strong, caring and kind spirit of support in everything he did-most notably, but not only at Caledon. I am sending my prayers to his wife, children, parents and other family and friends during what must be a most difficult period of time.
Randy, see you at Eagle Peak.

I first met Randy at a Caledon Conference in October 2000, he made a newcomer feel extremely welcome. Over the years, we have had numerous opportunities to connect with one another through SGI activities and in other settings. I thank him immensely for his dedication, friendship, encouragement and guidance. He will be missed.
To Shinobu, Ashley, Justin, John and Kumi, our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Dearest Randy, many, many thanks for everything! From providing your all out support, giving private guidance, sharing your experience, and above all, tagging me along to home visitations, and giving me a ride home afterwards, despite the proximity shall always be cherished throughout my life! What a great exemplar of a disciple of Sensei Ikeda! I salute you!!!

Back in the days when I was still in the young men's group, one of the joys of going to the Caledon centre was Randy greeting us as we came. He always had a welcoming smile and made me feel like I was coming back home away from home. He was always easy going and easy to approach, and it was always a pleasure talking with him. The way in which he supported the young men, with easy going humour, was something that I would always remember about him, and is something that greatly inspired me. I am sending daimoku to Randy for his repose and to his family for courage to get through this difficult time.
With deepest sympathy and respect,

Thanks Randy. I will not forget the moment when you waited up for my late arrival at the YMG Caledon. You were the first to greet me and offered to prepare dinner even when it was late. Your are a selfless person, and will be missed.

We are truly sorry to hear of the loss of Randy. Please accept our condolences. We will be sending our daimoku.
Growing up, Randy was like a big brother to me (all of us!). He was always laughing, always finding the humor in things, always bringing joy to everyone around him. And keeping an eye out for us.
Get some rest brother. Don't worry, we'll continue to work for Kosen-Rufu in your place.
