GREENSBORO — Dr. Raouf Badawi, 70, died Monday, Oct. 31 at his home in Greensboro, NC after a short bout with cancer. In his final days he was surrounded by family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5 at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home, 515 North Elm Street in Greensboro.
Dr. Badawi was born and raised in Egypt. He completed medical school at Cairo University in 1964 and worked for three years in the Merchant Marines.
Between 1967 and 1972, Dr. Badawi pursued his post graduate education in the United Kingdom and became a member of the Royal College of Psychiatry. He immigrated to the United States in 1972 but returned to Egypt briefly in 1973 to marry Isis Youssef. In 1974, he settled in Greensboro, NC where he practiced psychiatry for more than three decades.
Dr. B., as he was called by many, cared deeply about his patients and had an intuitive understanding of their needs. He practiced the art of medicine with unwavering commitment.
Dr. Badawi had many hobbies. In his youth, he was an avid dancer and swimmer. As he grew older, he developed a passion for music, cooking, fishing and gardening.
Above all, the joy of his life were his two children and his family. He often said that his many friends enhanced the meaning of his existence.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister. He is survived by his children, Cherine of Oakland, CA, Christopher of Greensboro, NC, and his former wife Isis, of Abu Dhabi, UAE, as well as his nephews Sherif and Adel Riad.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Greensboro Beautiful for planting trees in his memory. He loved to watch life grow. Memorials may be sent to 501 Yanceyville Street Greensboro, NC 27405 or by going online.

Dr. Badawi helped me through the hardest and most defining time in my life. I was deeply saddened when I heard of his passing. He is one of the wisest people I have ever met. His wisdom far surpassed that of medicine and science alone. He taught me much about life at a time when I needed it the most. He had a huge heart and was like a mentor to me. He was someone that was truly following his vocation or calling from God (in an age when most people only work for a financial gain). There are few like him. If it weren't for Dr. Badawi I would not be here today. He will definitely be missed by all that knew him. May his memory be eternal.
Love and best,
Basil Agapion

Dear Cherine and Chris,
I just this evening heard of your father's passing and am deeply saddened. I had the pleasure of working with your father at GPA as a receptionist and later office manager before I retuned to NJ. He was so kind and gentle natured and will always have a special place in my heart as will my conversations with you, his children. I hope you are both doing well and will find comfort in all the wonderful thoughts in this guest book. I did have the pleasure of visiting with your dad a few times before his retirement and it was always a joy to see him. Lynda told me the service was very sweet and the pictures here are a great tribute to him. He loved you both very much.

I knew Raouf as a physician colleague. He and Victor were my "Go-to-Guys" when I needed some help or suggestions with a psychiatric issue with my Internal Medicine patient population when I started practice in 1974 on Carolina St across from the Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Home. Raouf was a particularly generous and kind physician and always willing to share his knowledge and insight with others, whether another physician or a patient. He had a brilliant mind and was extraordinarily articulate. He first introduced me to the genetic commonalities among patients with ADD, interstitial cystitis, irritable bowel, fibromyalgia and a host of other conditions that seemed all too common among my younger and older patients. His approach to the complex emotional needs and physical events of our mutual patients I found very practical and considerate. I valued his counsel greatly as well as his patient manner. So did our mutual patients. He will be greatly missed in this community. R.I.P. Raouf.

Cherine and Christopher -- your father was a most important person in the lives of many in my family. His staight forward wisdom and empathy ( ALWAYS professional!) enhanced my life and saved my marriage. He truly had a gift -- and he shared that. All of his patients were incredibly fortunate. - He will be missed.

Dr. Badawi was a Master of the human spirit. He came into our lives when our son was diagnosed with a severe mental illness. Dr. B provided gentleness, compassion, expertise, understanding, and even humor when the time was right. I can only think that God is telling him, "Well done thou good and faithful servant". Our appreciation to his family for sharing this wonderful human being with us.

Dr. Badawi was a Master of the Human Spirit. He lived a life of service to others and gave to all hope, in despair, compassion, gentleness, firmness, humor, and above all, respect. He came into our lives when our son was diagnosed with a serious mental illness and stayed with us through the rough times and the not so bad times. My regret is that I cannot be there on Saturday, but will there in spirit. My belief is that God is saying to him," Well done thy good and faithful servant!". To Dr. B's family - thank you for sharing him with us. His memory will always be in our grateful hearts.

Dear Christopher and Cherine,
What a kind, funny, extraordinary man your father was. He was a model of empathy in his care of patients, and a good teacher. I will remember most his humor, his love of a joke, and his pleasure "messing about" on his Sixteen Acres. My heartfelt condolences to you both.
