Raphael DeHoratius Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 19 to Jun. 20, 2015.
Died on Thursday June 18, 2015, at Bryn Mawr Hospital. He was 95 years old. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Raffaele and Margherita DeHoratiis and the brother of the late Pasquale, Alexander and Vincent DeHoratius. Raphael grew up in South Philadelphia. Dr. De, as he was fondly known to his many friends and patients, spent his entire life and career in center city Philadelphia. He spent more than 50 years as a cardiologist treating his patients and raising his family in center city. He was very blessed to continue to practice medicine in his hometown and raise his children in the city he loved. Dr. De retired 15 years ago and spent his retirement continuing to attend medical conferences at Presbyterian hospital several times a week, mentoring to younger physicians and staying connected to the field he loved so much. Dr. De knew from an early age that medicine was his calling and he was incredibly blessed to be able to live his dream. He was a compassionate physician and spent many cherished hours with his patients, ensuring them the best possible care. Many of them came to be his extended family. Those that had the privilege of having Dr. De as their physician know the special care and love he brought to each one. Not only was this man an incredible doctor but he also was a single parent in not so modern times raising a family. He ultimately became a Grand Pop, another role he wore with immense pride. His family and grandchildren were blessed to have him with them for 95 years and he was able to share many significant life events with each one of them. That this quite a legacy to leave to his family. Dad and Grand Pop will be much missed. We know that he is home and we guarantee he is catching up with all those who moved on before him as he was the last of his immediate family to pass. The last several years of his life were spent in Doylestown and Bryn Mawr where he was given exceptional care as he moved on to the next phase of his life. He is survived by his children Marti Petroka ( George ), Mark H. DeHoratius ( Rachelle L. ), Raphael F. DeHoratius III and Caryn DeHoratius. His 5 grandchildren Andrew, Katie Petroka and Jordon, Elaina and Dominic DeHoratius. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service at Old St. Thomas Church( 1852 Church ), 418 Valleybrookk Rd., Glen Mills, PA 19342. on Tuesday June 23, 2015, Visitation from 9:15 to 10:15 AM ,with Mass to follow. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Old Gulph and Matsonford Rds., West Conshohocken, PA 194288. Directions at the church. Had a dream last night about Dr. D. I will say Mass for him today. He was such a dear man who just loved working at PGH and Presbyterian. We has some interesting conversations at his office on 17th Street. Father Groarke

Was thinking about you the other day. Your gentile and kind loving care for me and my family in the 60's and early 70's will always live in my memory. I was honored to have you attend my Ordination to the Priesthood in 1973 and attend my first Mass. I saw you a few days before you passed and you told me you could no longer see but I told you it was not you eyes that made you a special Dr. But rather your heart. I was honored and humbled to have celebrated your Funeral Mass here at St. Thomas. Rest in peace good Doctor. Father Francis
