Raul Gutierrez Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 21, 2016.
August 5, 1944 - September 16, 2016
Raul Gerrardo Garcia Gutierrez, M.D. was welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven Friday, September 16th, at approximately 6PM at the age of 72. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer, who lovingly stayed by his side until the end, two of his own children, Maria and Raul, three of Jennifer's children - whom he loved and cared for like his own - John, Aprill and Amy, and his only brother, Miguel Angel, one year his junior.
Dr. Garcia was a highly respected and loved member of the San Antonio medical community. An Obstetrician & Gynecologist who practiced for over 40 years, Dr. Garcia cared for an innumerable number of patients on San Antonio's Southside, delivering little bundles of joy to countless mothers over the course of his career. Known for his jovial nature and ease to speak with, all of Dr. Garcia's patients spoke very highly of him; indeed, in later years, many of his patients were actually babies he had delivered years' prior that were now coming to him for their own pre-natal health care, something that speaks volume to the professionalism that Dr. Garcia showed over the years. Among his colleagues, Dr. Garcia was an ethical, intelligent, humble and respectful physician who always put his patients' needs above all else, particularly helping those who may not have had the means to receive proper healthcare elsewhere. His work ethos and character will be missed. Dr. Garcia was born in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, on August 5th, 1944, the son of a housewife, Yolanda, and a pilot, Raul Garcia Mercado. Raul's father was actually a pilot in Mexico's Air Force, specifically as one of the famed pilots in Mexico's 201st Fighter Squadron that saw action during WWII in the Philippines; this squadron was the only squadron from Mexico that fought during WWII, directly under the ultimate command of General Douglas MacArthur, Commander of the Allied Forces in the South Pacific.
Unfortunately, his father passed away when Raul was 7 years old, leaving behind his brother, Miguel Angel, his sister, Yolanda, his mother, and Raul himself. As a result of this, Raul's family struggled; however, because their mother wanted the absolute best for them, the children still attended the best schools on reduced tuition on condition that they remain at the top of their class. Throughout their scholastic career, all the children, but particularly Raul and his brother, Miguel, excelled in school; ultimately, Raul chose to attend medical school in Monterrey, then decided to make the move to the United States to complete his residency and fellowships.
Having settled in the San Antonio area, Raul and his then wife, Amelia, welcomed two children to the world - Maria de los Angeles and Raul Jr. Currently, Maria is a housewife; Raul Jr. owns a small advertising agency in San Antonio, is married to his wife, Katie, and has two kids - Lukas and Liam. As is sometimes the case, however, some marriages simply do not last for any number of reasons. Fortunately, Raul was lucky enough to find love again, as he married Jennifer in the late 1980's, and, again, treated her kids - and their own kids - as his own, caring for and loving them as best he could. John, the eldest, is currently a probation officer in San Antonio, is married to Lisa, and has two kids, Johnathon and Kayla; Aprill has one son, Corbin, and works in the healthcare field; lastly, Amy is a registered nurse (RN) and is engaged to be married. Raul lived his life to the fullest; he lived his life with a purpose; he lived his life for others. A husband, a father, a grandfather, a brother, an uncle, a friend, a doctor - Raul wore many faces and wore them well. He will be mourned, he will be missed, he will be celebrated, but, above all else, he will be remembered as a genuinely good man. A Rosary will be held at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North on 3401 Cherry Ridge Monday, September 26th, at 7PM; a mass will then be held Tuesday, at 10AM, at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church on 1710 Clower Street, with a reception to follow. We also ask that, in lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Heart Association in Raul's name.

Dr. Garcia provided my family ad I the best medical care possible. He delivered all three of my girls and my first grandson in Feb. 2016.

I would always ask him Dr Garcia, when will you retire and his answer was always the same..."I have high taxes so not anytime soon." He would giggle and send us on our way with a smile.

He had the best bedside manner of any Physician I have ever met.He will truly be missed by many.

Dr. Garcia was the very best doctor I have ever known. He saw me through all 4 of my children's births and even though I was always high strung on nervous when I was in his office (because I suffer from Anxiety) he always made me feel better with his witty jokes and very down to Earth sense of humor. He always knew how to make me feel better. I am truly sad to hear about the loss of him, but I am sure that Heaven is enjoying his sense of humor and is blessed to have that Angel join them. I will never forget you Dr. Garcia and I am so blessed to have known you and had the honor of you being my doctor. Thank You!!!! Love......Brandy Baker

Thank you mr. Garcia for delivering my baby's. You will be missed, although you were just my doctor Me encariñe con usted, No quiero nuevo doctor

I just heard of Dr. Garcias passing. My oldest is thirteen, he was not my Dr through my pregnancy with her, however; my Dr was on vacation when I went into labor and Dr. Garcia stepped in and delivered her in 2003 at Santa Rosa. 12 years later I became pregnant again and hunted for the wonderful Dr that stepped in and delivered first child. That first and only encounter made such a difference in my life and I knew I wanted Dr. Garcia as my Dr throughout my second pregnancy. He delivered my second baby girl last year, Sept 2016 at Santa Rosa. I had a scare with my own health a few months after and he was there for me, to talk me through everything, as was his assistant Martha. Thank God everything turned out fine. I was due for another check up this month and this is how I heard of his passing. I will have to find aother Dr now but I know, no one will ever compare. I will miss his jokes, cowboy boots and him calling me Alice in Wonderland. My oldest that he delivered says she remembers how he always gave her a lollipop everytime she went with me for my check ups when I was pregnant with her baby sister. You were an Angel here on earth and returned as one to our loving God our Father. R.I.P Dr. Garcia...

I cannot believe it I just heard the news from my new obgyn Alecozay. Dr Garcia was my first obgyn and the best! He delivered both of my children, helped me through my miscarriage, always made me feel welcome and so comfortable. He also delivered me when I was born as well. He will truly be missed, such a loving, caring and wonderful man. It is such a sad day to know he is gone but he is now in peace with the lord. Thank you for your services dr Garcia, you will always be missed.

My sincere condolences to the entire family. Dr Gracia was my doctor for 29 years, he saw me through 7 pregnancies. He delivered 6 of my beautiful babies and shared their joy with me. But he also saw me through the sorrow of losing a baby. His compassion was immeasurable and he was the best doctor anyone could have. I will forever be grateful to him for delivering all of my children. I will always remember him being happy and cheerful, always whistling a little tune as he would walk down the hall or into the office to say Hola que te pasa mujer. He will never be forgotten and he will always be missed. Thank you, Dr Garcia for all your years of bringing babies into this world. Rest in peace.
Sincerely, Michelle Garcia and family.

Dr. Garcia delivered, my sister in 1992, my niece in 2007 & nephew in 2008, then my daughters in 2014 & 2015. All were complicated by health problems but he handled each one with the poise of an expert. He was a true gift to our family and will forever be held dear to our hearts. God blessed the world with the gift of a wonderful soul and called him home to rest. I hope his family can find peace in knowing his spirit will live on with so many. Thank you for sharing him with us!

To the GARCIA family, my deepest condolences to you all. Dr. Garcia was my doctor for 19 years. He was one of the kindest, sweetest, and most caring Doctors I have ever met. Dr. Garcia delivered both my daughters, now 18 and 12. I will never forget his cowboy boots, his sweet smile and him whistling coming down the hall. And I will miss him calling me "La famosa monique" when he walked in. You will forever be missed. God bless you.

I will always remember Raul entering the O.R. in the morning with a booming, "Good morning."
He was an absolute joy to work with and a good friend who loved to enjoy his limited time off.

Love and sympathy to all his family, and it is my privilege to join you all to celebrate his
life.

September 26, 2016

Dr. Garcia will be missed greatly. I will miss seeing him in the hospital with his jovial nature and natural smile.

I have had the priveledge of knowing "Doc" for almost 30 years. We had many fun times bowling, playing cards, hunting and trips to Las Vegas along with his wife Jennifer and daughter Amy.

His knowledge always amazed me especially pertaining to history and geography. I know that he got great joy passing this knowledge to others. I along with many will miss these conversations with him.

His love of children was very apparent. How fitting is was that he helped bring so many of them into this world. He had a great sense of humor, a kind nature and a loving spirit. He will be greatly missed.

Prayers to all of his family that I know will be missing him always.

To the Garcia Family,

Please accept my condolences on the passing of your beloved. I met Dr Garcia in August of 1975 when he took over after my Dr went on vacation. He delivered my daughter and then in 1979 delivered my son. I followed him from the Santa Rosa Clinic to his Division office and then to Briggs. I stayed with him for over 40 yrs.

Rest In Peace Dr. Garcia

To the Garcia Family:
Please accept my condolences on the death of your beloved. As a postpartum nurse at Santa Rosa, I had the honor & pleasure of working with him for many years. He was a devoted physician, an intelligent practitioner who cared deeply about his patients. I will definitely miss his booming voice, his Diet Coke, & the sound of his cowboy boots as he makes his way down the hallway. I regret that I will never hear any of his jokes again, some off- color, but all in good fun. Rest in peace, dear sir, and thank you for a job well done.

Dear Garcia Family:
Dr. Garcia was introduced to me during a difficult birth which resulted in a C-section 41 years ago. I have been his patient since. I am grieving over his passing and hope you and your family find peace that he was loved, appreciated and will be missed dearly. It will be difficult to find a new doctor as he knew his patients well.
God Bless you and your family.
