Ray Camp Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 1, 2010.
Camp, Ray Herbert
Harding H. S. Teacher
7/1/55 – 11/29/10

Preceded in death by parents. Survived by siblings, Steve (Barb), Sue (Dave) Sanft, Cindy (Bill) Swisher; 14 nieces & nephews; 7 grand nieces & nephews; his dog, Stella; numerous friends, and his extended family at Harding High School.
Ray Herbert Camp was born on July 1, 1955 (to Dr. Ray and Gladys Camp in Madison, MN) and was received by his Lord on Monday, November 29, 2010 (at the University of Minnesota Fairview Medical Center in Minneapolis).

A graduate of Mankato State, he was a teacher at St. Paul's Harding High School where he positively impacted hundreds of students and co-workers with his passion for learning, his honesty and integrity.

In spite of numerous health issues his entire life, he was a warm, spiritual, and positive individual who treated everyone with respect. Always a prankster, he loved life, golf, and lived each day to the fullest. After meeting a person once, he would remember their name, the names of their siblings and children, birth date, where they lived, as well as the color, year, make and model of the car they drove.

He had a wonderful ability to make everyone feel special and important and to know they have limitless boundaries on what they could accomplish with their life. He is our hero and will be greatly missed by his family, friends, his Harding family (staff, students and graduates), and his friends at Manitou Ridge Golf Course.
Visitation on Thurs., 12/2, 3-8PM at Wulff Funeral Home, 1485 White Bear Ave., St. Paul. Service on Fri., 12/3, 11AM at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, 1965 E. County Rd. "E", White Bear Lake, with visitation 1 hr. prior. Memorials preferred.

Every year, right around Thanksgiving I am reminded of those times of being in your class, and experiencing your character from high school. Its one of the few things I can say I truly miss. Thank you for the memories. You are not forgotten!

I smile every time I see his picture and think of him. I've known him as "Herbie" since the day he was born. The struggles he faced in life didn't stop him. Such a trooper. We all can learn something from his strength. Loved him like a brother. He was.

Sadly, we just learned of Herb's passing today. We knew him since 1989, and had many fun times with him at Diamond T Ranch. I'll always remember him and Little Joe serenading us with "you and me go fishin' in the dark." He bought our house in Richfield so we could have our ranch. We also have Chantelle's colt; he came to visit him a few years back. Rest in Peace Herb.... Sharon & Smitty

We grew up across the alley from each other in a neighbor hood full of friends that have lasted forever. Herbie Touched us all cause his life was always full of medical complications but that never slowed him from living life to fullest degree. I feel so blessed to have had him as a friend. Our paths crossed very rarely in that last 40yrs but each time was filled with laughter about "car crazy stuff".My thoughts and prayers are with Steve,Sue and Cindy and all the students he touched.

He will always be Herbie to us. Can you imagine what a personality a person with the name Herbie would have? Imagine that and multiply that by a thousand. Herbie was a great kid, maybe a bit mischievous, but he was liked by all.

By the age of 2, he was a car fanatic. I remember sitting on the curb of the highway in front of our house on a summer night. As dark as it was, Herbie could identify the head lights of a 1954, Chevy ...... Impala, .... 2 door or 1959 Chrysler, Imperial or any other car for that matter, a block away. I was in the ICU in the hospital 2 weeks ago. The nurses turned off one of the monitoring devices when the alarm went off. Beep .... Beep ... Beep. Almost sounds like a 51 Studebaker, I said. Herb responded, “49. I couldn’t see the smile with 2 air hoses in his mouth, but I knew it was there. I could see the gleam in his eye.

Proverbs 27:19 reads, “As water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects a man.......The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold but a man is tested by the praise he receives.” Look at the cards made by the students at the ICU. Look at the kids present at the funeral home. Listen to the stories told of a man that affected their lives. That’s testimony to a man that I will only remember as Herbie. I will remember his spunk. I will remember his laugh. I will always remember his spirit. That’s how we keep him alive in our hearts.

Mr.Camp was the best golf coach in world, He was a kind of grandfather that I never knew, taught his golf team about life and that we should cherish every single day as if it was going to be our last.Camp will forever be in our hearts and will never be forgotten. If the people we love are stolen from us, the way to have them live on is to never stop loving them. I hope that is happy fulfilling his heart with golf up there.

Dear Steve, Sue, Cindy and all your families,
I wish to express my sincere sympathy to you all. To lose a sibling that has been so close to you and such a good friend must be horrible. I can't imagine losing Chris or Peter. We have become so close to one another as we've aged. Visiting with you all and Herb at the house after your Mom's funeral was a gift for me. Being an educator as Herb, we had much to discuss and many anecdotes to share. From all that I've read, Herb made his mark on Harding High. To be so highly praised by so many is a true sign of a teacher that poured their heart and soul into their students and their learning.
I wish I could have attended Herb's service, but the job of a teacher kept me away. Knowing you all, it was a celebration of Herbie's life. The photos are all precious and brought back so many memories of times I spent with you and at your home in Madison. Please know that my heart aches for you as you mourn the loss of your brother and your uncle. May he continue to be with you from his heavenly home.
With sincere sympathy,
Nancy Jacobson

I was very upset to hear of the passing of Mr.Camp. Although I never had him for a teacher, I saw him often at Harding and he always had a smile and would stop to have a conversation with me. Once he found out I was a Brett Farve fan there was no stopping him. He always had something to say about him. I could never tell if he actually liked Farve or not. I will treasure those memories. Mr.Camp's family may you know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless.

December 2, 2010

Mr. Camp was one of those people that made the effort to get to know you, even if he didn't know you. All he had to do was acknowledge you were there. He was the kind of teacher that would engage his students by relating their lives to the world around them so that they'd understand there was so much more to life than the present. He meant a lot to a lot of people, for various reasons, and will be sorely missed among the Harding community.

Stephen Camp

December 2, 2010

Whether you knew him as Mr. Camp, Ray, Herb, Herbie, Huby, or Camp; you were dealing with quite a character.
His physical being started and ended with an extended hospital stay. In between were 55 plus years of "life." His enthusiasm and attitude was infectious. Yet he was silent about his physical issues.
Herb was the third of four children.
In our hometown of Madison, Minnesota, EVERYONE knew Herb.
But I need to mention how wonderful it has been to meet his coworkers and students. The words, cranes, and tributes have been uplifting. Our brother did, indeed, Pay It Forward.

December 2, 2010

I was so saddened to hear of Herbie's passing. He was a very good friend to my daughter, Niki, and I when he lived in Savage & we lived in Burnsville & Apple Valley. We spent alot of time with him in those years. I have very fond memories of that time. My prayers are with his family. Pam (Tucholke) Berhow Mandan, ND

To the Camp family you are in our thoughts and prayers. It sounds like Herbie made a big impact on all his students and kids at Harding. They are really going to miss him, along with everybody else. It would have been fun to spend a day in his classroom to see the teaching Herbie. You never heard Herbie complain about anything he always had a smile and something smart to say. I didn't realize he was the golf coach we should have played a few rounds he could have improved my game. There is going to be a void at the class reunions it was always good to see him. Blessed be his memory!

December 2, 2010

To the Camp family: Was so shocked and saddened to hear of Herbie's passing. Always enjoyed running into him when he was back in Madison, he would love to sit down and chat. We had alot of fun times back in the high school days. He will be greatly missed. With deepest sympathy, LuAnn Hegland (Larson)

Mr. Camp was one of favorite teachers at Harding. He was a great teacher, but more than that he was a great friend. He always had time to listen to any problems I was dealing with and always had great knowledge and advice to offer. Whenever I was having a bad day, I could go to him and he would always know how to cheer me up. He never stopped smiling and laughing.
RIP Mr. Camp. You will be missed by all! I send thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

Even though I only knew Mr.Camp for a little over 3 months, he managed to leave such a great impression on me. He was kind, friendly, and quite funny. He was always willing to help and made an effort to know you and to bring out the best in each and everyone of us. He was always there. I thank God for have given me the priviledge, honor and blessing of meeting the great, wonderful and amazing person Mr.Camp was and still is. And even though he is now gone from us, the memory of his smile will keep illuminating our hearts and souls indefinitely. Thank you Mr.Camp... for everything.

Ohhh Mr Camp... I get a smirk on my face when I hear your name. I have found myself talking about you to people in my life since I graduated. You really left your mark on us kids in school. You really listened and gave great advice when I needed someone there. I looked forward to 5th period when I would sit in class and actually want to learn! You made it fun. I remember bringing candy or treats to class (for myself)and you would just take it upon yourself to snatch whatever treats I had and gobble them up! So, I started bringing you your own treats! :)
You will be missed and never forgotten.. Thank you Mr. Camp for making a difference in my life.

Mr. Camp was such a wonderful person and teacher. I was a student of his for four years- He was my homeroom teacher as well as multiple social studies classes. He was always so fun and always so present in his students lives, especially in the case of my family. All 4 of my other siblings went to Harding and were taught by him and having Mr Camp was almost a rite of passage for us. I knew Mr Camp long before I ever even had him as a teacher due to my other siblings and how present he was in their lives. Mr Camp is one of my fondest memories from Harding High and he is missed dearly by all.

I want to express my sincerest condolences to Ms Holmes. When I attended Harding Ms Homes and Mr Camp were inseperable and I really wish her healing as well as all of the other teachers and students.

December 1, 2010

words can't even begin to describe how great of a person Mr. Camp was. I am lost for words since there are so many great things to say about him. He was the best role model and friend you could ask for in a teacher. He would always go out of his way to make everyone else's life easier. I will never forget how much he helped me out when I was pregnant in high school. I was put on bed rest and for three months and he would stop by at least once a week to drop off and pick up all my homework. I can truly say without him I would of probably gave up on school, but because of him I still graduated with the rest of my class. I think everyone can agree that we need a lot more people like Mr. Camp around in this world. My sympathy goes out to Mr. Camps family. We are all losing a great person in our life's. He will truly be missed by many, but god only seems to take the best of us first. Rest in peace Mr. Camp, we will miss you.

December 1, 2010

How do you even write the words down of a teacher who shaped, mentored and touched the lifes of so many Harding students in one way or another. Even if you didn't have Mr. Camp for a teacher, you still knew of him and his' ways. Food was a way to his' heart! Camp, you are always and forever going to be one of the best. You will be deeply missed and forever in my heart. Thank you for the talks, laughs, smiles and wisdom. Rest In Peace with the angels and watch over us all. We still need the teacher to show us the way and teach us.
To Mr. Camp's Family, my thoughts and prayers are with you and please find comfort that he is in no more pain.
