A number of years ago, while I was living, temporarily, with my Mom, She told me, "Steve, I think I know what is wrong with you--you drink too much." She was right, of course, but she didn't leave it at that. A short while later a vehicle pulled up in front of the house and Ray Hydrick came to the door. Ray sat down with me and passed on a bit about drinking and how it could affect a person's life. He then told me he thought he knew some people who might be able to help, and a short while later, after he dropped me off, I walked into my first AA meeting. I stayed sober for a year and could have gone longer had I not pronounced myself cured--which an alcoholic never is. In any case, Ray got me going in the right direction, and about 12 or so years ago I had my last drink (I had been sober a good time in the interims, too, just not as I am today, sober for life.) My Mom and Ray are responsible for getting me going in the right direction, and I'll never be able to repay them today, except, from time to time, by following Ray's example and starting someone on the path to sobriety. Thank you, Ray. And Thank You Hydrick family.

To All Of My Aiken Friends Who Knew & Loved Mr. Ray Hydrick:
Mr. Ray met Jesus face to face in Heaven Friday (yesterday) morning around 7:00 am at the age of 96. During this same time and same Friday, his Aiken Mens' Prayer Breakfast Brothers were meeting & praying as they have since 1 September 1976 at various locations from the old Ramada Inn, Hotel Aiken, Memorial Baptist Church, Shoneys and now at Auten's Restaurant. How perfect a tribute that God gave Ray for him to go to Heaven on a Blessed Friday that was so special and important for him to be there every Friday morning's prayer breakfast leading us all in prayer until his failing health kept him away. He has been in my life since birth thru yesterday with my Dad, Ed Clerc, being one of his closest friends! Young adults just starting out in their married lives years ago would rely on Ray's appliance business to purchase refrigerators, stoves, televisions, etc., and found trust & love of people in Ray Hydrick. I was blessed also in the early seventies for Ray to help my son, Keith's mom and myself with very little money to purchase some badly needed appliances. Ray's friendship & trust in Ed Clerc helped to establish my first credit history, and made buying a refrigerator, washer & dryer possible. Kids starting out today don't have that hometown caring person to help their foundation of getting their homes established anymore, and I am blessed to have not only purchased appliances from this fine man, but also the honor of God putting Ray in my prayer life with this fine Christian Gentlemens' Prayer Breakfast from 1976 to present! May God Welcome Him Into His Kingdom To Suffer No More Eternally With Jesus, Amen!

Mr. Hydrick was a wonderful man. My family knew him through his service to his church, his store, and his active participation with activities at Aiken High School. My mother and father, Jennie Lee Willis and J.O. Willis, dearly loved Ray, his wonderful wife, and family. He was a wonderful gentleman who will be deeply missed.

96 years! No one should morn the passing of this good man. Instead, perhaps, we should celebrate it. He was a friend to me when I needed a friend. He was a friend to my father and mother. And, he brought many people to thoughtful prayer with his prayer breakfasts. Thank you, Hydrick family, for allowing Ray to be a friend and help to so many of us. Our prayers are with you today.

Mr. Hydrick always lived his faith. When we first opened Mattie C Hall he and Mr. Wessinger spent their own money to buy a piano for the residents. He was so faithful to Mrs. Mary, even when she no longer recognized him. Prayers during this sad time.

I carry a Cross in my pocket a simple reminder to me of the fact that I am a Christian no matter where I may be. This little Cross is not magic nor is it a good luck charm, It isn't meant to protect me from every physical harm.
It's not for identification for all the world to see, it simply is an understanding between my Savior and me. when I put my hand in my pocket to bring out a coin or key, the Cross is there to remind me of the price He paid for me.
It reminds me too, to be thankful for the blessings day by day and to strive to serve Him better in all that I do and say.
It's also a daily reminder of the peace and comfort I share, with all who know the Master and Give themselves to His care.
So, I carry a Cross in my pocket reminding me, no one but me that Jesus Christ is Lord of my life If only I'll let HIM be.
I still carry that little cross and this tattered card that Mr. Hydrick gave me years ago. I'll miss you man. Save a place for me at the Master's Table.

Mr. Hydrick was a very special man. I still carry the little cross in my pocket, (along with the tattered card that goes with it), that he gave me years ago.
