Raymond Lamb Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 29, 2024.
Ray Lamb died peacefully in hospice last Saturday. He was 86 years old. While he had eighty-two wonderful years, the past four he had been battling dementia and eventually succumbed to a recent stroke.

"R.L." was born in Atlanta and spent the majority of his life there. He was a graduate of Murphy High School where he played football and made the All-Star team. He then attended Florida State University, where he played football for all four years on the Varsity Team. He played alongside the famous actor Burt Reynolds, actor Paul Gleason and was even coached by ESPN's Lee Corso.

He was also a proud member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and enjoyed every single minute he lived in the Sunshine State.

Ray was also a bit of an anomaly for a college football player. He started both ways and was for sure the only Math major on the team. Once he realized Pro Football was not in his wheelhouse he pursued a career in teaching. He earned his Master's Degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and eventually his Ph.D. from Georga State University.

Dr. Lamb began his teaching career at George High School in Atlanta, but after a short stint there he transferred to Dykes High School in North Atlanta. This was probably the most enjoyable time of his teaching career. He was the Defensive Coordinator for the football squad, the head wrestling coach and even oversaw the tennis team. He spoke for years about the lifelong friends he made at Dykes.

After Dykes high school he moved to Northside High School (now North Atlanta). He was Department Chairman there while also teaching night school at Georgia Perimeter college, formerly known as Dekalb Community College.

Ray Lamb was not your typical teacher; especially a Math teacher. He had more personality in his pinky finger than most possess in their entire bodies. However, he was an awful joke and story-teller, but had that infectious personality that drew people to him.

At the ripe ole age of 52 he retired with a full pension from the Teacher's Retirement System of GA after thirty years of service. However, he was driving everyone in the family up the wall! So, his family sent him back to work. This era of his life was the holy grail of what he aspired to be - a tenured professor at Emory University in Decatur. He spent 20 years there socializing with what he considered to be the elite of academia. While working at Emory he was then able to afford the finer things in life like traveling to Europe more than five times. Continuing to treat his family to the annual snow ski vacations without maxing out the credit card and even started to buy NEW cars. Not bad for a poor kid from Cabbage Town.

Papa Ray spent the last 25 years living in the beautiful home he built on Jackson Lake where his parents had owned a small cabin on the same property since the early 1970's.

R.L. was preceded in death by his first wife, Patsy Garner Lamb and his son Raymond Lamb Jr. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Berta Bird Lamb, children Robert Lamb, Lauren Law, Mitchell Moore and Chad Bird. Grandchildren, Raymond Lamb III, Matthew Lamb, Elizabeth Lamb, Brady Law, Madolyn Moore, Bo Law and Charlie Bird, along with several loving nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held August 17, 2:00pm at Trolley Barn, 963 Edgewood Avenue NE, Atlanta. Please RSVP to [email protected]

At George High, coach lamb was my math teacher, football, baseball, and wrestling coach. I did not want to wrestle but coach Lamb just told me to be at practice after school. When it came time for college, I had always dreamed of Georgia Tech. When he heard that he came to me and said no. His reasons were; i would attend while living at home, I knew too many people, I liked to have too much fun, and finally GT was hard and I probably would funk out by Halloween. No member of my family had ever attended college so there was no knowledgeable advice to help guide me. I asked him where am I going to go? He said see me tomorrow and the next day he handed me an application to a school I had barely heard of Auburn University. I graduated from Auburn with an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering and went on to an amazing career at Delta Air Lines and Georgia Tech. My son followed me to Auburn graduating 24 years later. Coach Lamb simply was the most influential teacher I ever had and I owe him for the guidance that shaped my adult career. I was thinking about him when I decided to do an online search and stumbled onto his obituary. To his memory I simply say thank you coach, I will never forget!

He was the best math teacher at Northside High School! Loved his class. He made learning fun. R.I.P. Dr. Lamb.

Dr. Lamb was my favorite teacher at Northside and truly made learning calculus fun and engaging. What an inspiration. I can still remember vividly taking his class with my tour show friends, and us studying together to make sure we stayed on top of his work and were prepared for his quizzes. His jokes would help relieve any math anxiety and you couldn“t wait to learn. What a gift he was to students who had the opportunity to be in his class!

Dr. Lamb was one of my favorite teachers at Northside High School. He made calculus fun and he thoroughly enjoyed teaching. I hope he has a yard stick and a chalk board in heaven - and NO - I will not be prepared for a quiz when I get there.

I hope and pray that Coach Lamb knew how much he influenced my life and all the rest of our football team at Dykes High School. We were under-sized, under manned, and had limited talent. He convinced me and many others that we could be successful and we were. His Calculus class was so tough that I never saw anything as hard in college. He was a man that I totally respected, and maybe feared a little. I am very thankful to have known him. JOHN SQUIER
