I knew Reuben when we were both enrolled at San Francisco State College. He was studying sociology and I, biology. We didn't have any classes in common, but he greeted me as we were both walking on campus and we stopped to talk, later became friends. He was an extraordinary person, kind and contemplative.
I am grateful for having known him.

Chief Reuben Greenberg was an awesome neighbor. He gave his all to the Charleston community. His dedication to the police department was outstanding. He cared, shared, inspired and guided through his many acts of kindness and deeds. What a remarkable man! Memories will always linger of all his unforgettable generosity. He Gave His All!

Every year around this time on the calendar I fondly recalland greatly miss the man I called Chief even at our treasured annual lunches at the home of Miriam and Don Cohen. He personified the title and commanded that respect. The song lyrics, Where have you gone Joe Dimaggio our nation turns its lonely eyes to you is instead Where have you gone Chief Reuben, our city turns its desperate eyes to you. Real leaders lead from the front lines not the back office. Rememembering directing traffic in the pouring rain instead of sending a subordinate showed you were living proof. May you be bound up in the bonds of eternal life and peace.

Chief Greenberg was amazing and the best police chief in the world! When we had a break in at our house in W/A , Chief Greenberg was the first on scene, and that was 11:30 at night! Rest easy, Chief! Thank you for your service!
