Ricardo Longoria Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 25, 2012.
Chief Petty Officer Ricardo Duran Longoria, Ret. U. S. Navy, born on April 9, 1952 went to be with the Lord on March 24, 2012 at the age of 59 years. He is preceded in death by his parents, Santos and Susanna Longoria. He is survived by his loving wife, Gloria Elk Longoria; daughters, Nicole Longoria (Al), Vanessa Longoria (Brian), and Jennifer Longoria (Ivan); grandchildren, Kalil Allen, Liora Allen, Kalani Jackson, Ricky Mendoza Longoria, and Alvaro Gutierrez; brothers, Mario Longoria ( Noemi) and Jaime Longoria (Denise); sisters, Gloria Longoria, Corina Contreras (Ruben), Josefina Longoria, and Lisa Hermosillo (George). Ricardo Longoria was a determined, dedicated, and caring husband, father, brother, and family man. He dearly loved his family and served his country exceptionally well. His Naval career spanned almost 28 years that included service in Vietnam and the first Persian Gulf War. He served on various warships and land bases in the Western Pacific, the Middle East, Europe, and the United States. In addition to sea duty Ricardo earned his flight wings as a crew member aboard EC-130 aircraft on missions to Alaska, the Aleutian Islands, and the Soviet border. After retirement from the U.S. Navy, he returned to federal employment with the U.S. Department of Defense- Military Sealift Command for sea duty on various Supply Transport Ships, and with the U.S. Navy Construction Battalion. His character is founded on strong family values, a close network of friends and is remembered for his uncanny ability to diffuse hostile, negative situations into positive ones. He will be dearly missed by all. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2012 at Trevino Funeral Home, 226 Cupples Rd. followed by a 7:00 p.m. Rosary that same evening. A procession will depart from the funeral home at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2012 for a 12:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. John Berchmans' Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project. Rick and I were shipmates in the Philippines back in 1970-71, our first duty station. I last saw him in the late 1980's in San Diego, just briefly. He was a true friend, will always be remembered and sorely missed.

I am so sorry to hear of Ricardo's passing. As is the case all too often those that we were close to in the Navy we lose touch with once we leave. I was stationed with Ricardo onboard USS Stump (DD-978). I will always remember Ric as a dedicated Chief and a great friend. I will keep Ric's memory alive in my thoughts. May God ease his family's grief during this difficult time.

To Gloria and the Longoria Family, My sincerest and deepest sympathy on the passing of your loved one. It has been too many years since I last saw you both but the memory of the gentle, kind, caring and respectful young man is what I do remember. Rick, may you find peace and comfort in the "spirit world." Gloria, may the cherished memories of your life together be a source of strength and consolation. May the Creator be with your family always.

Fair winds and following seas, shipmate. You were on the USS Jouett just a few years before I got there in '84. I see you had a profile on togetherweserved.com and maybe your family can update the data. It has been an honor to serve on some of the same deckplates as you.

Ricky I love you and I will miss you so much.. Words can not describe how sad I feel. I have an empty space inside that is filled with such sadness.

April 4, 2012

Ricky, I wish I were there in San Antonio to give my condolences to your family. Like you did when Eddie passed away. I just found out today, and I know you will be deeply missed. I remember when you shared the book you were writing about the Brentwood crowd. Wow, memories are flashing through my mind, I don't think there was such a wonderful growing up experience as the Brentwood Kids had, not in this whole wide world. Now you are there with Eddie and Doffer dog, doing you normal joking around, and mischievous goings-on. Love, Diane Martinez ( a Brentwood Kid) (Indiana)

Ricardo, thanks for being a Great ship mate, friend and brother you will be missed but not forgotten..

Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
Grant no other sailor take my shoes and socks before I wake.
Lord guard me in my slumber and keep my hammock on its number.
May no clues nor lashings break and let me down before I wake.
Keep me safely in thy sight and grant no fire drill tonight.
And in the morning let me wake, Breathing scents of sirloin steak.
God protect me in my dreams and make this better than it seems.
Grant the time may swiftly fly when myself shall rest on high.
In a snowy feather bed, Where I long to rest my head,
Far away from all the scenes and the smell of half-done beans.
Take me back into the land where they don't scrub down with sand,
Where no Demon Typhoon blows, Where the women wash the clothes.
God thou knowest all my woes, feed me in my dying throes.
Take me back I'll promise then never to leave home again.
