Richard "Dick" A. Beals passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, February 22nd, surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was a devoted husband to Fran, his beloved wife of 70 years, and a dedicated father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. A resident of Edgefield County for over 60 years, Dick was born in Springvale, Maine, on May 9, 1931, as the only child of Lester and Georgia Beals.
Dick earned a degree in Textile Engineering from Lowell Textile Institute, where he met Fran, the love of his life. After graduation, he honorably served his country in the U.S. Army before embarking on a distinguished career. He worked at Allied Chemical in Morristown, NJ, Hopewell, VA, and Columbia, SC, before joining Star Fibers in Edgefield in 1966. After 25 years of dedicated service, he retired as the Executive Vice President & General Manager.
Faith and service were central to Dick's life. He was an active member of the Episcopal Church of The Ridge serving in various roles as Treasurer, Board Member, and Senior Warden. His commitment to civic duty was evident in his many contributions to the community including serving as Edgefield County Election Chairperson and as Treasurer of the local United Way chapter. He was also a founding member of Pine Ridge Country Club and served as General Manager for three years.
Dick was honest, humble, generous, and fair to everyone, values that were evident in the way he lived his life every day. His work ethic was second to none, and he took great satisfaction in solving problems, no matter the challenge. He had an enthusiastic passion for golf, cherishing not only the game but also the camaraderie of friends on and off the course.
Dick and Fran shared a love of travel and a passion for lifelong learning, exploring the U.S. and the world together. He took great pride in their historic home, which they affectionately named Turkey Creek Hall, where they raised their four children. After the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene, Dick was committed to fully restoring Turkey Creek Hall and was especially appreciative of the professional expertise of Jeff Hughes in helping fulfill that vision.
The fellowship of Harvey Sprouse and thoughtfulness of Jean Covar brought Dick great joy as each shared memories and engaged in lively discussions. The family is especially grateful to Jose, a loyal friend for over a decade, who made Dick's love for working outdoors even more enjoyable.
The family greatly appreciates the compassionate and loving caregivers who graciously and tirelessly cared for Fran and Dick: Pearl Black, Dale McManus, Gail Mosley, and Deloris Marshall as well as Annie and Ethel for their almost daily companionship with Dick.
Dick is survived by his four children and their spouses: Rodney and Jane Beals, Karen and Lidvin Kjerengtroen, Cindy and Robert Gilbert, and Neil and Monique Beals. He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren-Lars, Heidi, Kristoffer, Sara, Hannah, Thomas, Clara, Nicholas, Monique, and Christopher-along with nine great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are planned for March 25th at 11:00 a.m. at Eastview Cemetery with a reception to follow at Trinity Episcopal Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Episcopal Church of the Ridge, 313 Simkins Street,
Edgefield, SC 29824, (803) 275-3934.
