Richard Blatchly Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 11, 2024.
Richard "Rich" Blatchly, aged 69, passed away peacefully on September 7th, 2024, in Boston, MA after a hard fight through illness. Born on January 31st, 1955, in Groton, NY, Rich spent his formative years between his hometown and the family's cottage on Owasco Lake. After falling in love with the sciences, Rich went on to major in chemistry at Williams College and completed a PhD in chemistry at Columbia University. Rich continued to share his passion for science through teaching organic chemistry at Williams College and Keene State College. While teaching subject matter that inspires fear in the hearts of most people, Rich continuously strove to keep his lessons accessible and even wrote two textbooks in the process. Most importantly, chemistry brought Rich to his wife Pat O'Hara, meeting in graduate school and connecting over everything from the thermodynamics of a rubber band to a lifelong focus on the chemistry of olive oil that allowed them to travel the world, foster deep friendships and eat delicious food together.

Equally consistent throughout his life was a love for adventure. Rich grew up partaking in every water sport imaginable and even made up a few of his own. Throughout his adult life, he maintained a love for the outdoors; cycling, skiing, and boating his way through life. His favorite thing in the world was to introduce family and friends to the family's cottage on "The Lake", where he was the first to take a running leap into the water, drive a boat for waterskiing, or build up the fire for s'mores.

Rich is survived by his beloved wife, Pat O'Hara, their daughters Sarah and Becca Blatchly, bonus daughters Julia LeBouvier and Shannon McCrocklin, brother Stephen Blatchly and sister Barbara Deering.

A service to celebrate Rich's life will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church in Hadley, MA on Saturday, September 14th at 11am. The service will also be available by Zoom using the following link: https://zoom.us/j/91728348035?pwd=ytNVB1sEHK2OgbGwbqyHC8ynNSxcuS.1

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Rich can be made to World Central Kitchen, Dakin Humane Society, or the Wesley United Methodist Church music program. These organizations reflect causes that were dear to him and brought him joy throughout his life.

We remember Rich in death as we did in life: witty, generous, inventive, humble and incredibly kind. We hope those who love him embrace those traits and carry them forward in their everyday lives, using this as a reason to tell that dad joke, build the Adirondack chair yourself, help someone in need, or take the first leap into the water. We know Rich will be watching in approval.

Rich and I were in high school together and both part of the Groton Central School graduating class of 1972. I always admired Rich for his brilliance. He and I shared a special friendship in high school. My condolences to his family. God bless him and may he rest in peace. Nancy Bishop Brown

I was greatly saddened to read of Rich´s passing. Rich was a great colleague and member of the Keene State community. I didn´t know him that well, but truly respected and admired him. I remember that he attended a presentation by one of my students of her research on shamanism in a small tribal society in Malaysia years ago. He was so interested and asked many questions afterward. My deepest condolences to his family and friends, Rosemary Gianno

Rich went many Amherst College Women's basketball games. I was the faculty liaison to the team for many years. He was always rooting for Amherst!

I am incredibly saddened to hear this news. When I was a new faculty at Keene State in Environmental Studies, I remember many warm hallway conversations with Rich. He was always willing to listen and offer helpful advice in understanding the world of academia. I really enjoyed talking with him about the chemistry of olive oil, as a foodie but also as a soap maker. Gone far too soon. I offer my deepest condolences to family and friends.

Sarah, Becca and Pat - I'm so sorry to hear this. I'll never forget Rich's annual liquid nitrogen ice cream for your birthday, Sarah - turning the wonders of physical chemistry into a delicious treat. Lots of love. Gihan

We raised our young children alongside Rich and Pat and the joy and love and generosity and playful adventure in the ways Rich and Pat held each other, their family, and their shared work was always a grounding inspiration. Shaken by and sharing your sorrow, a wonderful person and an enormous loss. All my love, Karen Sanchez-Eppler (and Benigno, Elias, and Eppchez)

I often think about Rich when buying olive oil. His interest and enthusiasm for it was contagious and we had many conversations in the second floor of the KSC Science building. I was deeply saddened to hear that Rich left this world so early. My condolences to his family.

Stunned to hear that Rich passed away. Rich and I taught in different departments, but served on many committees together. He didn´t shy way from expressing his point of view. Sometimes it was unpopular, but it was usually the right call. Rich was a man of principle and he called it like he saw it. And he really loved olive oil!

I adore that picture of Rich driving the boat on the lake, smiling into the wind. That day he took us out, his knowledge and love of all aspects of this magical place will always be with us. We love you, Pat, Becca and Sarah, and hope that all the wonderful memories of your husband/father will comfort you every day.

Rich Blatchly was one of the most humourous and vibrant members of Wesley when I attended. I deeply remember when the youth group took trips to Winthrop Maine to camp at Mechuwana. During lunch hour, after being slightly dissatified with the food that they served, Pat and Rich along with the rest of the team were making puns about the camps name, such as "Mechuwana have fun or Mechuwana not come". Another vibrant memory was with the youth group when we ventured into Springfield MA and partook in the Urban Developement Project, a project which brought to life the disparities faced in the inner city. We(the volunteers) were fed portions of food that were in resemblence of those who had marginalised income. Rich came into the dining room with 1 egg scrambled and said, "Here's the ration we have to share" with a smirk on his face. Along with other memories of his humour including those in Amherst Regional Gospel Choir where he would do voice impressions (like the Russian voice), he was a Christian of service to God and humanity. Countless times I would see him help with parking for the July 4th fireworks, and he would express enthusiasm. There is a visceral wound that has been scathed due to his passing, but I ensured that he is resting with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and is alive forever more. Thank you Pat and Rich for the enrichment you brought to my childhood which forged the adult I am today. In Christ there's no death.

Dearest Pat & Family, I was so shocked & saddened to hear about Rich. He was such a pleasant person and it was a honor to know him all these years. I loved all the talks we had and all his photography he showed me. He took some really stunning pictures! Rich will be missed but not forgotten. May your family find peace & comfort during this trying time. God bless you all .

We met Rich and Pat on our first day at Columbia University as graduate students. Immediately after Orientation during our lunch break Mike and I sat with our new friends Pat and Rich. Within a few years Pat and Rich were married and Mike and I. We have been lifelong friends ever since. We have been there with each other through the raising of our children. Smiles, laughter, snowball fights with our children, so many wonderful memories over the many years. Rich you will be deeply missed. You are forever in our thoughts and mostly in our hearts. Pat, we are here for you, always. With much love, Michael, Kathy, Chris, and Mike Motto.

Rich Blatchly (and his wife, Pat) welcomed my husband and me to the Wesley United Methodist Church family in 2020 when we moved to Massachusetts from Minnesota. Whether serving on a team to support an Afghan refugee family, chairing the Trustees, singing in the choir, or conversing during coffee hour, Rich shared his wisdom and experience, accompanied by an endearing sense of humor. We feel fortunate to have had Rich in our lives and extend our deepest sympathies to the Blatchly / O'Hara family. Barbara and John Devlin
