It has been a little over a year since Rich's passing and I still think of him every day. I was fortunate to have known Rich for over 20 years and in that time we had many great times together. Over this time, I had the chance to really get to know Rich and considered him as my closet friend. Everybody knew the charismatic, fun loving, good guy that Rich was but he was also very compassionate, generous, humble, brilliant and a great doctor. I had never seen Rich happier than he was over his last 5 years. He had a new beautiful wife Ruhiyyih he loved and he could not be more proud of his two children, Jessica and Jason. Rich was blessed in life and he knew it. For me, I miss the date nights with our wives, the boy's nights out, the Charger games, and the vacations we went on together. I also miss the times we will not get to spend together in the future. My two boys also really miss their “Uncle Doctor Rich.” Your memory lives on through your wife, children, and your many friends. You are and continue to be greatly missed. George Doan

I had known Rich for about twenty years. We shared birthdays and many laughs. What I remember most about Rich was his sparkle in his eyes and supremely kind heart. I felt honored to know Him and am forever grateful for his friendship prior to my move away from San Diego to pursue my career in medicine.
To his family I trust that you will keep his memory alive. You were blessed to love him.
To Rich- I will sing for you on our birthday.
My Best friend and her family We love you Rich

I had the pleasure of knowing Richard through my best and dearest friend Rue who I love and adore. They were the light of each others lifes and made a great couple. Whenever I spent time with them they both carried the same giddy twinkle in their eyes and were so much in love. They complimented each other in every possible positve way. I was in Colorado Springs at a Taekwondo tournament when I heard of the tragedy and dedicated my gold medal to his honor, as he was an honorable husband to my best friend. I wish Rue and the family all the blessings and am so sorry that God took their loved one so early. He will be greatly missed. Sincerely Claudia Perez : )

To the Brower Family,
We are so sorry for your loss. Just found out about his passing and had to send out our condolences. He was a wonderful doctor who really helped Anita live a better life. Ru, we cannot imagine the intense pain you must be feeling. We are sorry that you did not have as much time with the love of your life as you both should have. You and and all those who loved him are in our prayers! If we would have known sooner we would not have missed the memorial service. If you need anything, please let us know. God bless all of you.

I've been a nurse at Kaiser for many years and had many patients of Dr. Brower's for varying procedures and consults. I am truly saddened and shocked at his passing. Over the years he has become such a strong part of Kaiser, that he will never truly be gone. I know that I will never forget him. My deepest sympathies to his wife and family. He is a man who made his mark on this planet in every sense of the word. He is in God's hands now, but his love and passion for life and people will live on forever. My prayers to all his family and friends who embrace the loss of this amazing man.

Dear Ru, Jessica and Jason, & Linda,
It's been a month now and still impossible to believe that Rich is gone. Annie and I got to know him when we all lived at Lake Park Condominiums in La Mesa in 1978. We were part of a very special group that included Gayle, Butch & Risa, Bill & Donna, Debbie & Gordon, Phil & Margo, Bunny, Joy, Terri & Jerry, and Bob & Vicky. (Please forgive me if anyone reading this was left out...it's been over 30 years, after all!) Rich & Gayle left condominium living first, moving to Penasquitos, where we followed some 5 years later. Shortly after that, they moved to Solana Beach, while we stayed in Penasquitos. While the Lake Park group eventually fell apart due to geographic reasons, it was my privilege to be Rich's CPA for all these years, ensuring that I would see him at least twice every spring: once for our tax meeting and then again to pick up his returns. Along with several others, we also shared Padre season tickets for around 5 seasons, although we were never able to attend any games together. I got to see Rich for what turned out to be the last time at my 60th birthday party, on June 28th. I understand he was stricken less than two weeks after that.
I am so sorry for your loss. I will miss Rich very much, especially at tax time.
With Love,
Wayne

Dear All: I regret I was out of town and missed the ceremony but was with you in prayer. Rich was an incredible individual and I had the privilege of working with him as a colleague from the time he arrived at Kaiser until I retired in Aug 31, 2001. Not only was he personable, competent and capable, but he had a very good sense of humor. I also was fortunate to have him as my colonoscopist. I never felt anything and he was always tremendously reassuring. Probably his highest achievement was his love, devotion and influence upon his daughter, Jessica. He encouraged her to become a physician assistant and what an outstanding, competent and caring clinician she turned out to be. He will be with her and the family for ever in their presence. He will be missed.

Dr Brower... You're an amazing person. So supportive and trusting. You gave me such confidence while working the schedules that I knew I could take any task you gave me. With that I couldn't wait for Bella to meet you. She will always know about the way you'd ask about her. I'm grateful even though brief you got you meet her. And thank you for letting me believe I can do anything. Working worth you was an honor and I'm glad you were a part of my life. You will always be remembered...
I love that Rich's eye's are closed, since he's loving on his wife and friends.

Rich was so dear to so many. His stories and laughter made him memorable where ever he went. He loved to make silly faces for photos, crack jokes and one liners and was always a positive ball of energy. One of my fondest memories are of Rich, Bill and Mitch, hanging out in my kitchen, telling stories all night from "the good ole days". Their laughter made the whole house laugh. He was a big personality, too big to lose. I am so very grateful to have known him and shared so many dear memories with him and his beautiful wife, Ruhiyyih. He will never be forgotten.

Dear Ru, First I want to send my sincere condolences to you and the family. My heart sank when I heard the news and although I did not have the honors of getting to know Rich like others who were blessed with such a great friendship, there was one thing stands out, that I hold close and wanted to share with you. At a Superbowl party two years ago, I thanked him for opening his house to the guests and his generosity of such, even welcoming friends of friends, in which I was one, so I wanted to express how thoughtful I thought he was. He simply looked around the room and said, "Have you met my wife Ru, she deserves the thanks" .....as he looked around aimlessly I saw his eyes light up and I knew then he had found you. As he walked me over to be introduced to you in the kitchen, It was then, I saw the genuine love he had for you, in such a silent & candid glimpse 'when he saw you from afar with that sparkle in his eye'. His love for you, unspoken and very apparent and genuine at the same time. EVERYONE I know, speaks with great regard & very highly of him and having worked in the medical field for a while it is apparent, he was not only genuine at heart to friends and family but in the work and support he provided to patients as well. His love that shines thru his eyes in every pic of him and of those taken with his children. He truly will be missed and my heart felt sympathy goes to you and the family. I am sorry I could not be there for the memorial service but I wanted you to know that I so admired the love you two shared, the family values you embraced & the friendship I at least got a glimpse of. Hugs to you. Prayers and blessings to you all and if you or the kids, ever, need anything in times to come, don't ever hesitate to ask. We are all here for you. Tammy

Knowing Dr. Brower for many years working at the hospital, I was confident my father was receiving the best ERCP - Dr. Brower gave us another 18 healthy happy years with my father by finding an early pancreatic ca and strongly suggesting he proceed with a whipple resection despite my fears. Last year he again was the one to give our family the bad news that my Dad had developed a different stomach ca which would soon claim his life. His professionalism and demeanor are unmatched. I will forever be thankful for his helping our family cope - my prayers are with his family now.

I can laugh and cry all at the same time. I will always treasure the paycheck moment with Dr. Brower. It was a payday in G.I. and I was reading my check stub. When I hear "Man is that your check, you live off that"? I would not be able to make it. I said huh comes this statement from my doctor really???! All of us in the nurses area laughed. Such an amazing spirit, love for life. Just a PHENOMINAL soul. I am greatful God felt the need for us to cross paths all those years ago, and still remained friends until the end!!! I love ya Dr. Brower I hope Paradise is having just as much fun with you as we all did!!!!!

REALLY sucks when a truely gifted, talented, compassionate, humanitarian is taken from the world too soon! Just another wake-up call that life can be too short and life should be lived every day to the fullest and glorifying God. I'm gonna have to trust that You needed him for a higher purpose Lord. My thoughts and prayers are with your family and all who loved you that they may find peace and continue your loving legacy. Rest in peace knowing you made many lives enRICHed with your surgical skills and friendship and will be missed by many!

I've had the pleasure of hanging out with Dr Brower over the past 7 or so years as a friend of Jessica. He has always been very kind, fun and generous. I would also see him at the gym almost on a daily basis, one of the most fit there! He would always go out of his way to say hi! Rich was always the most generous host when we would go to the charity balls that he used to sponsor, where we would always have such a great time. My heart breaks for jess, jason, ruhiyyih and the rest of the family. May you find strength in each other and in all the friends and family who love you dearly! He will be missed but definitely remembered!

Shocked and saddened, my heart goes out to Dr. Brower and his loved ones.
As a Kaiser ICU/ER nurse for years and wife of a challenging patient, I truly appreciated his compassion and professionalism. He would take the time to talk and to listen. Bedside procedures for the critically ill went smoothly. He will be missed by many.

What an amazing and charismatic man Dr Brower was! I drove his limo for 3 years and enjoyed doing it immensely. I could always expect a good laugh or at times sound advice as I drove him around. He knew how to treat people with respect and dignity on top of being so professional. I learned so much from observing his demeanor and character, I only wish that I had taken the time to let him know that just being around him, his friends and family has had such a positive impact on my life. I feel so truly blessed to have met you..thanks Doc..I'll never forget you.
I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing and can only hope that time will alleviate the pain. To Ruhiyyih, I saw a change in him when he met you..I don't know how he could have been any happier a person than he already was but I saw it! To Jessica and Jason, he was the man that we all wish for being our father..you are both so truly blessed.

Thank you for sharing the photos. My heart goes out to all the family, friends and colleagues of Rich. What an unexcepted loss. I worked with Rich for nearly 20 years, mostly as the Senior Nurse in GI at Kaiser. Rich was always ready and willing to teach and very supportive of me. His skills as an endoscopist were amazing. I am proud and honored to have been there at the beginning of his time at Kaiser and for the following 20 years. The transplant recipients are truly blessed to receive the organs embedded with the spirit of a remarkable man.

Thank you for sharing these all these wonderful pictures. I was lucky enough to meet Rich Brower in 2001. From the first day it was apparent what an incredible doctor he was. His intelligence and dedication to patients were second to none. His endoscopy skills were legendary. Like many other of Rich's students, I was deeply influenced by and him and strived to emulate his work ethic and competence. I soon realized it could not be done. Rich never took one sick day in 25 years; watching him do an ERCP was like watching Michael Jordan in the fourth quarter. Simply put he is irreplaceable as a doctor. As great a loss to the medical / Kaiser / GI community as this is it pales in comparison to the loss of Rich Brower as a person and as a friend. Rich has a smile that could light up a room, loved a good joke and a great party. Ru, it was such a pleasure to see how happy and content you two made each other. Rich wore his pride and love for you and his children Jessica and Jason like a badge of honor. He was always willing to help out and to do the right thing. He was there for all of us when the chips were down, and when times were good there was nobody better to share a laugh and a beer. I say good-bye to Rich with a heavy heart, but I also say thank you to him for everything he meant to all of us. It was truly a pleasure and an honor to call him a colleague and a friend. He will be forever missed and never forgotten.

What a loss! I knew Rich as a larger than life friend, colleague, and source of needed information and endoscopic skills in tough situations for 30 years. Rich set a comfortable, relaxing atmosphere in every situation. His quiet confidence was coupled with extraordinary competence. I was always thankful that I was sharing patients with Rich because I knew they would get the best care. Kaiser is fortunate that Rich chose gastroenterology and then Kaiser after the Navy
His patients loved him so much. They were appreciated him not only for his medical skills but for the way he spoke to them. They cannot believe that he is gone. He leaves a wonderful legacy through the gastroenterologists he helped train over these many years. His greatest legacy are his children Jessica and Jason, and his wife Ruhiyyih who carry his spirit on. I have my deepest sadness when I think of their loss and what they are suffering through and I offer them as much condolence as I can.

I unfortunately did not personally know you father well but he had an enormous impact on my life that I would like to share. As my dad's doctor when he had cancer he was the first doctor to correctly diagnose my dad after years of seeing other doctors. My dad's cancer went into remission for a year following the wonderful care that my dad received from your dad . Words cannot describe how grateful I am for that year with my father. My family is in a better place today because of that year with our dad.
Your dad was a blessing to my family. I am so sorry for the loss of a great man

Rich and I joined Kaiser in the same class (1986), having come over from the Navy, where we worked together frequently -- (little known fact, we had as busy a surgical endoscopy service as the G.I. endoscopy service at Balboa). He was my "go to" guy always for the difficult G.I. problems, and problems not always G.I. I've missed his sage and clear advice and counsel. His death is a devastating loss to all who knew him...most of all, I know, his family and colleagues in the G.I. Department at Kaiser San Diego. Rest in Peace, Rich.
Sincerest condolences to your family.

Thank you for sharing the beautiful photos. They capture Rich's great personality and his love for his family. He was so happy with you, Ruhiyyih, and he was so proud of you, Jessica and Jason. He had a generous and fun spirit - always the life of the Holiday Party - and oh, those amazing Super Bowl parties! Professionally, he was a man of the highest integrity and strength - both physically and emotionally. He always stood by his principles and supported his colleagues and staff. He was among the most talented advanced biliary endoscopists world-wide. He was a calm and stable "rock" in situations ranging from life-threatening emergencies to reassuring the "worried well." His passing leaves a huge void at Kaiser GI, but I can only imagine the grief that you feel. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Ruhiyyih, Jessica and Jason - and with all who loved him. We are grateful to have had the privilege of working with him.

My heart goes out to Rich's family and close friends. Even though I have not seen him in several years, I am stunned and deeply saddened by his death. San Diego won't be the same without that laugh and smile.
