Richard Cain Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 21, 2010.
CENTERVILLE — Richard J. "Dick" Cain, 80, of Centerville, died peacefully at his Centerville home on Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010.

He was the beloved husband of Andrea M. (Gallagher) Cain, and the loving father to his four children, Joseph L. Cain, Kevin C. Cain, Christopher J. Cain and Caitlin C. Cain. In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by three grandchildren, Gabriel C. Cain, Lillian M. Cain and Charlotte Noell Cain, and his daughter-in-law, Ruth (Seward) Cain. He also is survived by a sister, Margaret Aylward.

He was the son of the late Joseph and Lillian (Perry) Cain, and was born on Jan. 6, 1930, in Quincy. He was predeceased by his brothers, William Cain, Thomas Cain and Robert Cain.

Dick grew up with his parents and siblings on Plymouth Road in Newton, and he summered with his family in Osterville. Dick graduated from Newton High School and received his college undergraduate degree from Georgetown University.

Following college, Dick served as an executive officer on a Mine Sweeper in the Navy. Following his service in the Navy Dick entered law school at Boston College Law School, where he graduated in 1958 as a distinguished member of the Boston College Law Review.

Dick married his beautiful wife, Andrea Marie Gallagher, on June 27, 1959. Dick and Andrea remained happily married for 51 wonderful years. Dick and Andrea raised their family at 295 Wianno Ave. in Osterville, before relocating to Centerville in 2005. For 20 years, Dick and his family were members at the Oyster Harbors Club, where Dick was an avid golfer.

Dick, who once worked as an assistant greens keeper at the Wianno Golf Club in his youth, was passionate about maintaining his lawn, which was unquestionably better tended and certainly had fewer divots than any of the fairways on the two golf courses in the village.

Dick was a well-known and respected local attorney who maintained his private practice on Main Street in Harwich Port for over 50 years. He was an Av Rated lawyer, the highest peer review obtainable by the premier rating service for lawyers. He was a passionate lawyer and consummate professional. His clients included the Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank, numerous local businesses, and individuals from all walks of life, including three former CEOs of Fortune 100 companies. He was extremely active in the Barnstable County Bar Association, where he served in various capacities, including as president from 1976-1977. He was chairman of the Seminar Committee, the Scholarship Committee and Social Committee for that local bar association.

In 1978, he created the committee that brought the Superior Court Law Library up to a minimum operating facility. He was a recipient of the Barnstable County Bar Association's Distinguished Jurist Award. He served as a delegate to the Massachusetts Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He served on many state and national bar committees and donated his time generously to local organizations, including the Legal Services for Cape Cod and the Islands, where he once served as a board member. He also served as a member of the Boston College Law School Alumni Association and contributed generously to the endowment of the Robert F. Drinan Chair at Boston College Law School.

A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010, at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, Wianno Avenue, Osterville. A reception will follow. Burial will be private.

The Cain Family,

We were very sorry to hear of your loss and wanted to offer our deepest condolences. We had only met Dick once but had heard of him from Chris and Ruth many times. Dick was an acquaintance of my father as well who spoke very highly of him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Andrea and family, I am so sorry to read of Dick's death. I have many fond memories of visits to your lovely home in Wianno. The last time I saw Dick was over at the courthouse in 1995 and we were so pleased to see one another. It's many years since I've seen you, but remember you and the boys fondly. Please know that I'm thinking of you all. Angie

My dear and respected friend, we will miss you. Your sense of humor and keen knowledge of the law made you a fine example for those of us who continue to practice law on Cape Cod. God Bless you and all your family.
