Richard Campbell Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Dec. 14, 2008.

CAMPBELL, Richard "Rik" Ian My wonderful, loving and very courageous husband Rik, passed away peacefully at home with family by his side on December 4, 2008 at the age of 64. Rik was born on February 18, 1944 in London, ON. He is survived by his loving and caring wife of 28 years Nancy, his parrot "Dad's Boy" Hunter, his sister Norah Campbell of London, ON, brother Peter (Margaret) Campbell of Toronto, ON, sister Susan Shurtleff of Brandford, ON, many nieces and nephews and extended family. Sadly predeceased by his father John in 1965, mother Rhea in 1996 and brother-in-law Bob on October 24, 2008. The family moved to Sept Isles, Quebec and from the age of five he had a passion for trains, following his father's footsteps and becoming an engineer for the QNS&L Railway. In the early 1970's Rik moved to BC to continue his railroad career with PGE/BC Rail, Hydro Rail, then headed to Liberia, S.A. running iron ore trains building a rail line from the mines to the port. Rik returned to BC Rail in 1976/1977 to continue his career as an engineer until he retired in 2003. His proudest achievement was obtaining his Diesel, Steam and Electric Certification, having run the Royal Hudson and working in Tumbler Ridge. After retirement he worked at Roberts Bank and instructed at BCIT then moved to Kelowna working for Kelowna Pacific Railway in 2004. His career came to an abrupt end in 2005 when he was diagnosed with cancer which he fought with such positive composure and strength. His other great passion in life was hot rods and working on cars, two which he held close to his heart. He will be deeply and sadly missed and will surely miss all of you. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, December 18, 2008 at 1:00 pm at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna. Nancy:

We were having a happy hour with Bud and Nancy Boyd today when we heard the awful news that Rik had passed away. We then began to reminisce about the good times we had with you and Rik at Canyon Point. Rik was a great asset to our complex because he willingly would fix anything either in or outside of the owners' units. We also talked about the parrots that called out from your deck and made us think we were in the jungle somewhere. Of course, his love of cars came up and we remembered how devoted he was to the reconstruction of a black beauty (we couldn't recall the make and year).

When you two left and moved on there was a huge void at our complex. We still miss you both and we are very saddened that we won't see Rik again. We are so very pleased that you came to our 10th anniversary function. That was the last time we were together and we remember the fun time we had at that event.

Amaryllis and I want you to know that we are thinking of you and we know how much you are missing your dear husband and friend, Rik.

Bud and Nancy also wish to express their condolences on the loss of Rik.

Rik came into my life last year and has forever, change my view of life. He and Nancy were exceptional and gracious to myself and husband. He handled his health with strenght and always looked, on the up-side,when we meet last April 2007. We had the privaledge of going on tour with them in their area and one highlight was our road trip ,to Kettle Valley Railway in Summerland. Just to meet Rik's friends and spend some time together was great!!! We toured the railway site and had the privaledge of meeting ,his long time friend Ron Restrick and the staff at the historic railway site. It for us ,from Nova Scotia was a real glimpse ,of Rik's passion for trains and I was so proud ,to be ,up on the engin and took some great photos while there, having a visit. I signed on ,as a member and he certainly work with some Great people, in his railway life. We had some great phone chats when ,he felt good. He had a positive way of looking at life, oh!!he probably was fisty ,with his health ,taking , a toll on him and he and Nancy have been through alot since ,the time ,we ,1st met. Special Thanks to Nancy and her sister, Janet and Jeff and others, for all the support ,to keep him ,trying to fight that long battle with his cancer. He would have both good and bad days but through it all Nancy- God Bless ,her , she was his lifeline to all his needs and gave him all the support , he needed. I personally ,want to Thank, her for taking, such fantastic care of Rik,always, there beside him with unconditional Love. He was extremely Lucky ,to have you ,in his life, Nancy!!! for sure. Now that Rik is no longer with us ,we must cherish the memories and Live Life to the Fullest ,as the way ,he lived life ,when his health was good. I will always Love you, both and certainly cherish the friendship ,of being ,able to connect ,after so many years. Lots of Love ,from your sister, Wendy and family in Nova Scotia. Its been a wonderful journey!!! I miss you lots Rik , you'll always ,have a very Special place in my heart, and Nancy take care of yourself . I think ,the World of You and Love You Lots!!!
