Richard you were my friend for so many years every since I moved to Sarasota in1977. I had to share this picture of you back then. I have every Christmas card you ever sent. Many of them were with your artwork. I will always remember you a fine artist and my true friend. Now you leave us it is sad God bless your family.

It is with a heavy heart that I remember my dear, sweet friend Richard Capes. We became close friends in 1962 while attending the University of Georgia´s Fine Arts program, and we remained close ever since-even with many miles between us.
After graduating, Richard eventually moved to Sarasota, drawn by the beautiful weather, the budding arts culture, and the chance to be closer to family. He quickly became involved in writing and illustrating books about Siesta Key, and each sketch reflected his deep love for the area.
Richard had a generous heart and was always eager to give back-supporting local charities, the symphony, museums, and so many meaningful causes.
I was lucky enough to visit Richard this past March, and I´m so grateful I had the opportunity to spend that time with him. His friendship was a gift I will always treasure, and his warmth, talent, and spirit will never be forgotten.
With love,
Frieda

I am saddened to hear of Richard´s passing. He did some work with his artistic talent for my mother quite a few years ago.
Ironically, I came into town yesterday (7/11/2025) to visit family and was hoping to contact him. I have several prints of the Manatee County area He drew a personal sketch from a photograph for my mother a long time ago. It was of my great-grandparents home-place in WV. Attached is a photo of it courtesy of my cousin.
I was seeking to talk to him about it.
He was so very talented and deeply respected by those that knew him. He will be missed many all.

Dear James and Shirley,
I will miss Seeing Richard around the facility. He was truly a gentleman who always had a smile on his face, a very pleasant and calm demeanor, kind to everyone and grateful for any help he received. He was a pleasure to know and I´ve been blessed to have known him.
My sincere condolences to you and your family.
