DERBY: Richard Michael Ciardi. On July 31, 2020, heaven opened its gates for a beautiful angel. Richard Michael Ciardi, age 18, lost his life as a result of a tragic motor vehicle accident.
Richard was born in Bridgeport Hospital on January 17, 2002, loving son to Richard and Susan (Dargenio) Ciardi of Derby. A lifelong resident of Derby, he was a recent honors graduate of Emmett O’Brien High School Class of 2020 where he studied Precision Machinery. There, he was a talented, stand-out soccer player earning the title of All-League player with the CIAC in his Senior year. Richard’s smile was infectious. He was gifted with the ability to make everyone laugh and smile and touched the hearts of everyone that had the great fortune of meeting him. When he was not working or playing on the soccer fields, he also enjoyed gaming and spending time with his family and friends.
Richard was employed at RAF Electronic Hardware in Seymour for the past two years, where he began his pre-apprenticeship with the State of CT while still a student. Upon graduation, Richard was then immediately hired as a screw machine operator, where he was continuing to learn and expand his knowledge and working towards his goal of completing his apprenticeship. He loved his job and all of his coworkers. It was truly his home away from home.
In addition to his parents, Susan and Richard, he leaves to cherish his memory, paternal grandmother, Carolyn Ciardi of Monroe, maternal grandmother, Diane Noel of Shelton, godmother and aunt, Susan Lakhal (Marc) of Monroe, uncle, Daniel Ciardi (Marcy) of Waterbury, uncle and godfather, Michael Dargenio of Shelton, cousins, Adam Lakhal, Daniel and Angelina Ciardi and numerous friends.
The family is organizing and will announce a memorial for Richard in which everyone can attend, honor and celebrate his life. Burial will be private. The SPINELLI-RICCIUTI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia has been privileged with the arrangements. To sign Richard’s guestbook or share a memory, please visit www.spinelliricciutifh.com.

As a parent of a 2020 EOB graduate and classmate of Richard....I cannot fathom the pain of losing a child so young and full of life at the beginning of their adulthood. My deepest condolances to the Ciardi Family, the 2020 Alumni graduates and all those whom Richard touched their heart. Matthew is still trying to come to terms with this loss although they were not close friends. But he and I agree that this loss is huge.
Heavenly Father, we are crying to you in trouble. Deliver us from our distress, for we are empty and lost. We don’t know what to do or how to cope with life after the demise of a child. Lord, give us the strength to go on and help take one step at a time as we come to terms with what has happened. Father, hold us and console us for it is only in You that we can find the strength to go on with life. Thank you, Lord, for answering our prayers. In Jesus’ holy name, all who believe and pray said Amen.

Richard worked at the same place as my 17 year old son. Also went to EOB though different grades. News of his accident and passing still tears me up, even though I never met him and my son only knew him in passing. My heart goes out to you, Mr. and Mrs. Ciardi. To lose the child so many hopes, dreams and love went into is an unimaginable pain. God bless you all.

I am so sorry for your loss. I can’t imagine the pain you are both feeling. I remember him playing little league baseball with Edwin! He was always smiling. We don’t understand why he was taken so soon from this world but I am sure he is an angel looking over his family.

I was one of Richard’s soccer coaches when he was in middle school at DMS. I was a sophomore at Derby High School when he was an 8th grader on the team and every practice he was full of energy and confidence and never gave up even when he couldn’t take another step. Sending my condolences to Richard’s family and friends back home in Derby.
