Richard Conway Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 6 to Feb. 7, 2016.
Richard Francis Conway, Sr.

April 9, 1929 -February 4, 2016

Richard died this Thursday as the result of a heart attack he suffered on January 23. He is survived by his wife Mary, his children Patrick (Maureen), Joan (Mark Bell), Richard, his grandchildren Theresa, Brian, Cecelia, Richard, Joseph, Helen, Thomas, his sister Eileen, his sister-in-law Joan, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers James, Donald, and Edwin.

Richard was born in Springfield, MA, the child of Irish immigrants Joe and Julia Conway. He went to Cathedral High and after graduation did various jobs until he started an apprenticeship as a plumber. He met his wife, Mary, in Brooklyn, NY in 1959. They permanently moved to San Francisco for their honeymoon. It was the first of several cross-country car trips they would take. He got a job for the City of San Francisco and worked for the city as a plumber for Public Works until his retirement in 1990. He was a proud member of Plumber's Union UA Local 38 for over 50 years. Once he retired he enrolled at San Francisco State University and earned his bachelor's degree in Humanities, graduating Magna Cum Laude.

Richard and Mary loved to travel. They traveled to Ireland yearly after Richard retired. They enjoyed taking bus tours and went all over Europe and Asia.

Richard was a devout Catholic. He belonged to St. Finn Barr Parish for 52 years. He was a lector and a Eucharistic minister. Richard had a wonderful sense of humor and was always interested in people. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He rooted for the Giants.

Richard had Alzheimer's disease and it slowed him down considerably in the last few years of his life.

The vigil will be on Thursday, February 11 at 7 p.m. at St. Finn Barr Church, 415 Edna St., San Francisco. The funeral mass will be on Friday, February 12 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Finn Barr Church. The burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Donations can be made to St. Finn Barr School.

We will miss Richard's annual visits to Ireland. He always had a great sense of humour and loved to debate.

Whenever we pass through Crolly village in Donegal, we will remember Richard with great fondness.

Our sincere condolences to Mary and family.

Love and prayers to the Conway family. Mr. Conway always had a smile for me on his way to church or picking up his grandchildren at school. Know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers
