Perry , GA- Richard Wilden Dannenberg, 59, died at home in Perry on Sunday, November 11, 2018, surrounded by his wife of 36 years and his five beloved children. He enjoyed 59 years of excellent health, followed by five short weeks suffering from the cruelties of cancer.
Born September 1, 1959, in Macon, Georgia, to Walter and Aggie Dannenberg, Richard was a graduate of Mount de Sales Academy and the University of Georgia, where he was known for his sharp mind and witty antics. He worked for Mellco as both a treating plant manager and as vice president of sales and marketing, for which he traveled the eastern United States, delighting in the small towns and people he met along the way.
For fifteen years, he owned the AlphaGraphics print shop in Macon, helping to revitalize downtown by restoring a historic building near the location of the former Dannenberg Department Store, where he spent many happy childhood memories alongside his father and great grandfather.
After closing the print shop, he worked as a freelancer, writing blogs and designing web sites for small business clients. As an entrepreneur, his favorite work was passing on his knowledge of business to the bright young people involved with the Macon Chamber of Commerce's Young Entrepreneurs Academy.
Richard was a voracious reader and writer and supporter of the arts, from his days playing drums in the Athens, Georgia, rock & roll scene to his patronage of Middle Georgia's community theatres, symphonies, and museums.
He is survived by his loving wife, Laura Reeves Dannenberg; his parents, Walter and Aggie Richardson Dannenberg of Macon; his brother David (Mary Ellen) Dannenberg of Santa Fe, NM; and his five children, Dot Dannenberg (Jake Williams) of Doha, Qatar, Ellie Dannenberg of Claremont, CA, Leah Dannenberg (Bereket Ayele) of Saint Augustine, FL, Wil Dannenberg of New York, NY, and Madeline Dannenberg of New York, NY. He took great joy in his one grandson, Solomon Ayele of Saint Augustine, FL.
A celebration of his life will be held at 3:00PM Wednesday, November 14th at Mulberry Street United Methodist Church, 719 Mulberry Street in Macon. The family may be contacted at the Dannenberg home in Perry and will also greet friends at a visitation on Tuesday, November 13th from 5:00-7:00PM at Hart's on Cherry Street in Macon. Interment will be private for family only at William Wolff Cemetery. Reverend Doug Mays and Rabbi Aaron Sataloff will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any memorial contributions be made to Macon Outreach or Theatre Macon, two organizations Richard felt made a difference in the Middle Georgia community.

Richard was one of my closest friends in high school. Even at a young age, he was a man of strong beliefs and wide-ranging interests. He was someone, once you had gotten to know him, whose influence remained wherever life took you. One day just a few years ago, I was sitting exhausted and demoralized in an airport restaurant with most of a nightmare trip still before me, when I spotted a photo of Rahsaan Roland Kirk on the wall. That made things better, because of Richard. Thanks, man.

I saw Richard in a doctor's waiting room only a few days before he died. I had no idea he was so ill, though he was using a walker. I have known Richard in a business capacity for many years, but his dad and granddad had a strong relationship with my ancestral family and were well thought-of. I am sorry that such a fine person is no longer with us and offer my condolences to his wife and to his dad, Walter, who was always a joy to talk to as he made sales calls on behalf of Richard's printing enterprise, and to Richard's mom. I must add that Madeline was a delight to see on the stage of Theater Macon.

I was very sorry to hear of Richard's passing. I worked with Richard for over 10 years at Mellco and found him to be very witty and funny as well as extremely smart. I'm sure he will be greatly missed by family and friends.

So thankful for the life of this good man, and the opportunity to be his client, and friend, over the years. He was good at his work! Richard was one of those rare people with whom no constant communication was necessary to maintain a solid friendship. I knew him for over 40 years and saw him but rarely after high school. Mr. Walter & Family, Prayers to Your Family in loss of Richard. My Mother, Frances Leslie worked at Dannenberg's for many years and so did I while in High School. Many fond memories of the whole Dannenberg Family, interesting to hear of Richard growing up there. Richard and I were high school classmates and though as adults, we did not see each other often, I always looked forward to seeing him at class reunions. He was a kind, gentle, funny man with a heart of gold. I spent many hours at Richard's house during high school as that's where we always hung out. Loved talking with Richard's Dad and his mom. It's so hard to know what to say now that's not trite or superficial. Richard is probably the last person I talked to that
loved talking politics that made me laugh and with whom I agreed. There have been many times I would have loved to drive to Perry just to talk with him, especially in the past couple of years.

Richard was a man of integrity, a positive influence, a talented hard worker and a wonderful man. I only knew Richard a few months but would meet with him on a weekly basis most of that time. I will miss working with Richard, but most of all, I will miss our conversations about our families and how much he loved his wife and family. I remember the pride he showed as he smiled when we talked about each of his children and what they were accomplishing in their lives in pursuing different career paths and overcoming challenges. I loved praying with Richard those last couple of meetings and how strong he was in facing this last challenge in his life. I will miss you my friend.
