Richard Day Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 4, 2025.
Richard Hartwell "Dick" Day, 80, passed away on March 27, 2025, in Canton, Connecticut. A Simsbury Resident for over 40 years. Born on July 20, 1944, in Greenfield, Massachusetts, Dick lived a life marked by quiet strength, unwavering loyalty, and deep personal conviction.

Dick was the son of Harry J. and Muriel (Hartwell) Day. He grew up in Greenfield alongside his siblings Debbie Day and Phillip Day. From an early age, he demonstrated a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for solitude and self-reliance-qualities that would define his life.

He pursued higher education at Westfield State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree with honors. Though he initially aspired to become an English teacher and sought deferment from military service to pursue this path, Dick was drafted into the Vietnam War on his wedding day-a moment that profoundly shaped his life. Despite the abrupt change in course, he served with honor and returned home with a renewed sense of purpose.

Following his military service, Dick began a long and successful career in the insurance industry. Over the course of four decades with the same company, he experienced steady growth and professional fulfillment. His dedication to hard work and loyalty made him a respected figure among colleagues.

Dick was a man of many interests. He found joy in gardening and yard work, often spending hours tending to his outdoor spaces with care. He had a passion for refinishing antiques and took great pride in restoring both furniture and vehicles-whether classic or contemporary-to their former glory. His love for saving extended beyond objects; it reflected a broader philosophy of frugality and preservation that guided much of his life.

Though he identified as a true atheist until the end of his days, Dick held deeply rooted moral convictions. In the 1960s, he marched for civil rights alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., standing firmly for justice during one of the nation's most pivotal eras.

Dick is lovingly remembered by his daughter Jennifer M. Finaldi; his son Christopher R. Day; and his cherished grandchildren Chaston Finaldi, Trevor Finaldi, Abigail Day, and Christopher Day. He also leaves behind his sister Debbie Day and brother Phillip Day.

He was preceded in death by his parents Harry J. Day and Muriel L. Day; as well as by his beloved aunts Harriet Hartwell and Marion (Hartwell) Cummings.

A graveside service will be held on July 21, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM at Green River Cemetery, located at 56 Wisdom Way in Greenfield, Massachusetts (01301). Military honors will be presented by the Massachusetts 54th Regiment in recognition of Dick's service to his country.

May Richard Hartwell "Dick" Day be remembered for the integrity with which he lived his life-and may those who knew him find comfort in honoring that legacy.
