Richard Dennett Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 23 to Nov. 24, 2009.

NEWBURYPORT — Richard Karle Dennett Jr., of Newburyport, formerly of West Newbury, died on Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009 after an 18 month battle with brain cancer.

He was born Feb. 17, 1955, the son of the late Richard and Eleanor (Henneberry) Dennett.

Rick was the father of Katelyn Dennett of West Newbury and Sarah Paniagua of Lawrence. He had three grandsons, all of Lawrence. Rick was also survived by his fiancee, Jane Foley Watkins of Newburyport, who provided his care the past 18 months.

Rick was a graduate of the Immaculate Conception School and Newburyport High School, a member of the Class of 1974. After apprenticing with the late Keith Walton in the mid-1970s, Rick started Dennett Construction, a successful 30 year business, specializing in remodeling and finish carpentry. His business thrived with Rick rarely travelling beyond the local area due to a strong repeat customer base business.

Rick, an avid sportsman, enjoyed hunting, fishing and skiing throughout his life. Rick's greatest sports passion was the opportunity to coach at many levels and especially the chance to coach his daughter Katie on various basketball teams. He coached Pentucket Middle School girls intramural and travel teams along with the Northeast Hurricanes Girls AAU team. Rick was a senior league baseball coach in Newburyport, coached youth sports in West Newbury and coached freshman girls basketball at Governor Dummer Academy. Rick enjoyed many years of playing in the former City Basketball League, fast-pitch softball at Cashman Park and only 12 years ago started playing golf which became a true passion.

He was a member of the Pease Golf Club in Newington, N.H., where in May of 1999 he shot a hole in one. Rick was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Mark's Masonic Lodge, the Aleppo Shriners of Wilmington and the Newburyport Elks Club.

I've only known Ricky for a few years, mostly from working with him on the Lynch's house down the Cape. Those few years still gave me a lifetime of memories. I'll never forget his friendly personality or his great big belly laugh. I'll miss you buddy. Rest in peace.

To Jane and Katie, You have lost a father, a friend,a future, and many years which you should have had together. I had great times with Ricky over the past 34 years and an appreciation of a strong friendship. He was there when I needed him as I was there for him when he needed a friend. We both shared a common respect each other. We talked and he told me how much he loved Jane . I told him on many occasion that he was blessed to have met her. She is a remarkable person. Ricky would want all of us to watch out for her now , and his treasured daughter Katie. Both of them have been rocks for him while he battled his illness. His spirit will live on forever in my heart as well as many others. Let us celebrate his life and not mourn his death for we all will meet again. Thank you Ricky for your friendship. I will miss you and never forget your smiling face.

Rick was my Senior League Baseball coach in the summer of 1974 - we won the league championship under his leadership. He was a blast to play for and I have great memories of Rick. So sorry for your loss.
