Richard "Dick" Ballew Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 15, 2025.
Richard "Dick" Forrest Ballew, 96, of Livermore, CA, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

A devoted follower of Jesus and a man of integrity, Dick lived a life marked by service, love, and faith.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Cynthia "Kat" Ballew; daughters Sandra Bruns, Alicia Montell (Eric), and Allison Nelson (Erik); grandchildren Annelise Montell, Cassy Baker (Dylon), Samantha Montell, Nicholas Bruns, Samuel Nelson, and Hannah Nelson; and great-granddaughter Emma Baker. He also leaves his brother Jerry Ballew, sisters-in-law Kaye Ballew and Jean Ballew, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Ballew Sr. and Sarah Ballew; brothers Donald "Don" Ballew and Lyle Ballew; brother-in-law Steve Sinclair Jr.; and parents-in-law Steve Sinclair Sr. and Veiva Sinclair.

A retired Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy, Dick served as a Naval Fighter Pilot at the close of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Dick was a Mustang officer, having served as an enlisted service member ferrying planes during college, and then earning his commission as an officer after graduation.

While leading his squadron during Vietnam, his fellow aviators affectionately called him "Mother", his in-flight radio call sign, in recognition of how he always looked out for their safety during those dangerous missions.

His decorations included the National Defense Service Medal with bronze star, the Vietnam Service Medal with two campaign stars, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with Palm, all enduring symbols of his courage, loyalty, and sacrifice.

After his military career, Dick became a dedicated high school math and science teacher, remembered for inspiring students to persevere and achieve against all odds.

A gifted mechanic, master electrician, and aeronautical engineer, Dick built motorcycles, repaired cars, transformed an old army bus into a motorhome with his brother-in-law Steve Sinclair, and even constructed an airplane with his dear friend Nat Brown - blending creativity and science with precision.

Dick enjoyed old-time country and worship music, as well as historical war fiction and science fiction. He wholeheartedly supported his daughters' activities, even serving as a referee for their field hockey games.

He remained close to his three brothers throughout their lives, sharing an unbreakable bond of love and loyalty.

Dick steadfastly lived out his faith through ministry and prayer. While living in Virginia Beach, he hosted a Bible study in his home and led a prayer group for fellow teachers at First Colonial High School, encouraging colleagues in both faith and perseverance. After moving to California, he served in the church sound booth and prayed with his men's group he affectionately called "The Boiler Room Gang". Early every Sunday morning, he would blow the shofar to welcome the Holy Spirit to church, which brought him great joy.

Known for his wisdom, encouragement, and unwavering integrity, Dick was a man whose word was his bond.

A man of great faith, he faced life's challenges - including blindness and illness - with courage and trust in God. In his final moments, he smiled, confident in the promise of eternity in heaven with Jesus.

He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever cherished by all who knew him.

Scripture: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." – 2 Timothy 4:7

Yesterday

Dick lived a beautiful life, serving the Lord and being a wonderful example of someone who loves Jesus and wanting to follow His ways.

I remember him with fondness and appreciation, and love and admiration for his servant's heart for prayer for First Colonial high school.

I imagine him being greeted by Jesus! I am a life that was strengthened by Dick's friendship because of his faith in Jesus Christ.
