Richard Diesner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 30, 2016.
Richard H. Diesner

Our beloved Dick Diesner ended his suffering and passed into The Light on October 2, 2016, following a long struggle with complications of a stroke. Born to Herbert and Mildred Diesner on July 14, 1931, he thrived during a cherished childhood in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. Following his graduation from Northern Illinois State Teachers College he joined the Army, serving with the Counter Intelligence Corps, and stationed in Germany. His teaching career began in Western Springs, Illinois, where he met his wife Roberta. After their 1958 marriage they settled in Seattle where he taught Science in the Public Schools for 33 years and helped introduce the Earth Science Project. He was the recipient of four National Science Foundation Summer Institutes, as well as an Academic Year at Arizona State U. After Retiring from teaching he enjoyed employment at a chemical company, as well as doing Radon testing in the area. He was a committed ESL tutor, and helped six immigrants earn their U.S. citizenship. A man of great Faith, he was a long-time member of Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church where he served as Congregation President, Sunday School Superintendent and Food Bank volunteer. With wonderful memories, his survivors include brother Roy Diesner (Wanda) of Illinois, wife Roberta, children Paul (Sumirah), Elizabeth (Jackie Nelson), and Martha Diesner, brother-in-law Roger Stanley, and beloved nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at Phinney Ridge Lutheran, 7500 Greenwood Ave. N., Seattle, on Friday, Nov. 18 at 2:00 pm. Memorial remembrances would be welcomed at the church; at Literacy Source, 3200 NE 125th St., Seattle 98125, or at Compass Housing Alliance, 77 S. Washington St., Seattle 98104.

He was my next-door neighbor for a little over eighteen years. I really miss him. He was a humble man from beginning to end. Mr. Diesner, the world misses you.

I knew him as Mr. Diesner in Western Springs where he was my science teacher in junior high school. He was courting Miss Stanley, my music teacher, who clearly adored him. Seventy years later, I remember them both above all others from those years. They were highlights.

My condolences to Roberta Stanley Diesner and to the rest of your family.
