Richard Erickson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 6 to Mar. 7, 2006.
Dick Erickson, age 72, Leawood, KS, passed away March 4, 2006. Dick was born September 2, 1933 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Milton and Klover Erickson. As a teen, his father was transferred to the Kansas City area. His parents chose to live in Shawnee Mission, so that Dick could benefit from a great school system. The values of devotion to family and the importance of education that were passed on to Dick by his parents would be a cornerstone of his life. He graduated from Shawnee Mission (North) High School in 1951, the University of Kansas in 1954 and University of Kansas School of Law in 1957. He practiced law for 38 years at the law firm currently known at Van Osdol, Magruder, Erickson and Redmond in Kansas City. During his career, Dick participated in a variety of civic endeavors, the Kansas City Estate Planning (President), Junior Chamber of Commerce, Missouri Bar Association and the Lawyers Association of Kansas City. In recent years, Dick became increasingly involved in projects to enhance the beauty of the city he loved, Overland Park. In particular, he spent many hours volunteering and raising funds for the Deanna Rose Farmstead and the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. He also enjoyed golf and was an active member at Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club. You always knew when Dick Erickson was in a room. Never afraid to speak his mind, he loved discussing politics and KU sports and relished the role of the contrarian. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Nicholas Erickson. He is survived by his wife, Georgia of 48 years; his sister, Marilyn Williams, Edmond, OK; his children, Brian and his wife Kristi, Coppell, TX; Kent and his wife Lisa, Leawood; Neal and his wife Courtney; Overland Park; Marc and his wife Lindsey, Leawood; Shelley Adair and her husband, Brent, Austin, TX; 13 grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Dick will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Please join us in celebrating Dick's life between 6-8 p.m. Monday, March 6, 2006 at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Valley View United Methodist Church, 8412 West 95th, Overland Park, KS. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, 8500 Santa Fe, Overland Park, Kansas 66212. (Arr: D.W. To the Erickson Family, my deepest sympathy at Dick's passing. I always remember him as "coach" having played all of those seasons of 3&2 baseball on his teams. His was a great man.

Always enjoyed calling the law offices and telling them my name. I knew Mike Fitzgerald and called him occasionally and also talked to lawyer Erickson, who has friends everywhere. Now we know Al Terry here at Table Rock Lake. Best regards to the Erickson family from another named the same.

Dear Georgia and family,

Our heartfelt sympathies go to you and your family. We were so shocked to hear about Dick from Max and Lois, but were so glad you were able to visit with them recently.

Dick was always such a fun loving and caring person. Our hearts ache at his passing.

If we can do anything, let us know.

Always,

My fondest memory was watching Dick in the stands at 3&2 stadium as Neal played catcher through our elementary years. Neal, your dad showed great patience as we kicked the baseball around those fields.

May the celebration of your dad's life be one of joy for the man he was and what he provided, and may God's peace be on your entire family.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I have known Dick since early Junior Chamber days and I have wonderful memories of those days. I also would meet Dick along with many other "old Jaycee" and other friends for lunch during the week for a "little break" and Dick would always "spark" the conversation and keep it interesting.

One thing about Dick is you knew where you stood with him, he was honest in his opinions and his relationships as well as his business.

I admired Dick as a man of integrity in his comings and goings and as a family man. He will be missed, but as the life he lived I know he is with God.
