Around this time of year , I always remember how sad it was to learn of Rick's passing. I remember the day I found out, how devastating it was . Rick's zest for life, his infectious smile, his wonderful personality, will always remain in our hearts...... even 6 years later. I know that as someone who grew up with Rick at Van Tech and on the baseball field, in my heart he will never be forgotten. I know he has found peace and with other now surrounding him, he shines on down for us every day. In Rick, I always thought " You can take the boy out of East Van, but you can never take the East Van out of the boy. You are with us every day Rick and will never , ever be forgotten. Vaya Con Dios my friend.

Rick, you were a great guy. Glad I was lucky enough to know you. Hard to believe that it's almost 40 years ago. Baseball, Sunrise park, Van Tech and all those places of our youth. Rest and ease is yours now and the rest of us will have to plug on without you because we have to but we'll always remember you. We'll all be there with you sooner or later, so keep an eye out and let us in the back way if St. Peter bars the front gates to us. See you then.

I am very saddened to hear of Rick's passing. I worked out at fitness Quest for a few years and although I did not know him well, every time I walked in the door I was greeted with a smile and a positive vibe! Great memories, and great gym! Rick was super friendly, super happy, and one of a kind!

Rick was one of my best friends in Grade 8 at Tech . . . alphabetical seating placed him right behind me. I was stunned yesterday to have heard of his death and would like to send my deepest condolences to all of the people who were lucky enough to have known him, but especially to the luckiest--his immediate family. It has been a quarter of a century since I last saw Rick, but I remember his smile . . . that big, broad smile that drew you in and welcomed you. I remember his humor. I remember his kindness. It is distressing that he is gone. Though I live on the other side of the world, I was and always will be an East Van boy, and in Rick's death, we have lost one of our own. Remember him. He was a good one. deficit omni quod nasciture . . . abiit ad maiores.

It was a shock to hear of Rick's death. My memories of Rick are from years gone by in high school. He had a great sense of humor and English and Math class would have been a bore without him. From all I have read here, it's clear that he went on to do great things and touched many lives. I can't think of my childhood without thinking of Rick. Thanks for the memories. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Dear Allan & Joanne,
Our deepest sympathies. My cousin in North Van sent us the notice of Rick's passing asking if Rick was related to the same Finlayson that we lived next door to on Wellington Ave. I was sorry to say it was. Our thoughts are with you now.
Hugs,
Irene, Mary-Lynne, Doug & Ivy (Beaton)

I am Ricky's Second cousin from Trail B.C. I lived with his family when I first moved to Vancouver in 1980. They were the sweetest, coolest people on earth, and my heart goes out to Alan, Joanne, Randy, Linda, and everyone who knew and loved this beautiful boy. He had a heart the size of a room, a generosity of spirit, and for a guy as unbelievably strong as he was, a warmth and tenderness towards people and animals that I will never forget. We (my family, Nora, Joe and the rest!)love you Alan, Joanne, Randy, and we will never forget all that you have meant to us in our lives... God bless you, and prayers for the loss of another human angel. See ya, Ricky!

Ricky. Having attended the service today only re-enforces what was said, "You have always been a man of respect, peace, and dedication." Whether it was two weeks or four years that passed since our last meet, you always remembered your friends. You always treated everyone with dignity and never ceased to smile that "Ricky" smile. You will be sadly missed on this earth, but fondly remembered in our hearts. From your endless list of friends, we love you, respect you, and bless you for touching us the way you did. May our thoughts be with Linda and family. Ride free my friend.

It is with heavy heart that I heard of Ricks passing. I will always remember Rick as someone who always had time for a kind word and appreciated a good laugh. I will fondly carry the memory of our times together and the innocence of that age. The beautiful thing about Rick is that he never really lost that appreciation and sense of wonder in living and sharing his life with family and friends. Via con Dio my friend, you will be missed but not forgotten.

Al and Joanne, this was a heartbreaking day, it made us want to grab our daughter and hang on to her for all life is worth, as obviously we never know what tomorrow will bring. Parents are not supposed to bury their children first, it's supposed to be the other way around. Ricky and our daughter were both born within 3 months of each other and we shared the beginning of parenthood together 43 years ago. Our heart goes out to both of you. Love Bob and Helen Zess

I can't help but remember the early years...I think we were about 12 and use to talk for hours on the phone. You would pull the long black cord through the kitchen and into your bedroom...lol..just enough room to close the door! It was 1977 lol...Rembember Thunderbird and Mr. G...you were Ricky back then :) At my grade 7 birthday party we all played spin the bottle, ate spaghetti and our parents let us all have a little of Sonia's dad's wine...Poor Joanie broke out in hives...:) (you, Steve, me, Sonia, Joanie and Paula..I think Herbie might have been there too) You came on your skateboard :) They were skinny back then with little wheels :) wow..it all just seems like yesterday. I'm so glad we had a chance years later to get caught up and laugh about those days :) It was no surprise, you were still that same sweet guy with the brilliant smile! Thank you for being part of my wonderful childhood memories....I will miss you Rick!
To Joanne and Al...my heart goes out to you both during this time. You were the parents that were always there and always involved.
Rick was lucky to have had you both!

Many years ago I worked with Al - Rick's dad at Woodwards. Over the years I got to know the family fairly well. Years go by, life changes, less contact, then one day I ran into Rick at Fitness Quest - all grown up!
He always had a smile and a handshake. We continued to run into each other over the years, and would stop and chat. My thoughts are with the family. Rick you will be greatly missed!

East Van won't be the same without you. I'm certain that from heaven you will continue to take good care of your beloved wife, family and pets.
This is terribly sad and tragic, and hard to believe. I admired your gumption to build a home for you and your family, and will miss watching your construction progress during dog walks along Charles Street.
You have touched many, and that was crystal clear at the service. This a good reminder for all of us to enjoy life as much as you did, and to be as kind as you were.
Your warm smile and wonderful zest for life will resonate in our hearts forever.
With sincere compassion for Linda and the family, Eva
