Born December 22, 1928 in the Willow Glen district of San Jose, Richard Garland, known to all as Dick, quietly passed away surrounded by his family on December 8, 2018. He was within weeks of his 90th birthday. He was the son of the late Esther and George Garland and brother of the late Georgia Garland Tyson (and husband Jack). He is survived by his loving wife, Pat (Patsy Cadwallader), son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Ruth Garland, and daughter, Sue Garland Tardif. He is also survived by his four beloved grandchildren, Ben and Jasper Garland and Skip and Chrissy Tardif.
Dick was a graduate of Lincoln High School where he met his loving wife Pat on the first day of school. After owning and running a gas station in Willow Glen, he joined the Air Force in 1950. His new wife joined him where he was stationed in Texas. They returned to San Jose where he graduated from San Jose State and became an independent insurance broker in 1955. He and Ray Sturges formed the Garland Sturges Insurance Agency and enjoyed many years as partners and friends. This firm eventually became Garland, Sturges, & Quirk, which is still thriving today. Dick was active in the business for 55 years.
He believed in living life to the fullest. He was a devoted family man and he loved waterskiing, snow skiing, sailing, fishing and especially motor homing. Dick and Pat spend many happy hours traveling across the country and to the mountain cabin they owned with their good friends the Schlossers. His children and grandchildren brought great joy to his life.
Dick's positive outlook on life was evident in his business, his family life, and was experienced by all who met him. He was a long-time member of the West San Jose Rotary Club (now Campbell). For the last four years he and his wife have been residents of the Terraces of Los Gatos and enjoyed the loving community.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 15th at the Presbyterian Church of Los Gatos, 16575 Shannon Road. Feel free to make donations to your favorite charity in lieu of flowers
