Richard Goff Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 8, 2024.
Richard Denis Goff died April 7, 2024, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his beloved wife Jeanne, son Charlie (wife Lu), and daughter Annabella. In the very short time from Richard's initial illness to cancer diagnosis, Charlie and Annabella provided invaluable assistance in settling the family affairs for Jeanne. Richard was born on July 18, 1941, in Burgess Hill, England. He is also survived by his family in England, including younger brother Jonathan Goff, Jonathan's wife Kathy, and their sons James (wife Michaela) and Simon (wife Marissa).

Richard spent his early years in Hove, England. Richard graduated with a Masters degree in Civil Engineering from Imperial College London. He had a long and successful career with British Petroleum with postings throughout the Middle East and later in San Francisco where he met and married Jeanne, then Dallas, and Houston during the early days of the North Slope Project in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.

Richard's work took him and his family back to England for three years. In those years, the family lived outside London, enjoyed many holidays, reconnected with family and friends, and forged many lifelong relationships. Though he maintained close ties to England and his family and friends there, Richard proudly naturalized and became a US citizen.

He was a master gardener, avid golfer, world traveler, and lover of wine. Richard put his engineering background to use in many projects, erecting home fences, building a wine cellar, digging a water lily pond, and much more. He loved the family dogs who passed before him: Shetland Sheepdog Frances, mixed breed Susie, Golden Retriever Bo, and Goldendoodle Gus.

May he rest in eternal peace in the loving embrace of his dogs, basking on a sunny beach, and playing many rounds of golf. There will be a private family memorial. Donations in his memory may be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center.

I first met Richard at the P.N.E.U. Primary school in Hove and we have been friends ever since, and our parents were great friends over many years. We both went on to Brighton Technical College where we joined the students Squash club and together started up a students Swimming club. We had many good times together including when Richard spent a few days with us in Scotland, and he went with Janice to see the launch of the QE2. Before that we went walking in Battersea Park and he and I together lifted Janice over the railings to get out of the park after the gates had been locked. We had many adventures in our youth, lots of them on various golf courses over the years. Our last meeting was in in 2019 ( I think ! ) when Richard and Jeanne visited the UK and we met up with them, along with my sister Liz and John and Delia Spink, to enjoy a lunch in Petworth at the Angel Hotel. Richard was such a good friend it is hard to realise he has gone; we are so sad to lose him but thankful he is out of pain. Our hearts go out to Jeanne, Charlie, Lu, and Annabella. Richard and Janice Harwood.

A wonderful photo of Richard. That's how I will always remember him.
He was a kind, gregarious, treasured friend. Blessings to his loving family.

Richard was my Best Man on 20 June 1970, so he has a special place in my wife Valerie's and my memory.
We have not met for many years. They say 'distance leads to enchantment' but what it can never do is extinguish memories of our time in Libya during the mid sixties and ongoing friendship.
Richard, Rest In Peace. God Bless You.
