Richard Grubb Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 5, 2016.
Richard Adrian Grubb, 37, passed away February 2, 2016, at the Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital following complications triggered by anesthesia prior to a dental procedure.
Richard was born 27 July 1978 at the Bloomington Hospital. Richard's arrival in this world was extremely rough for which he had scars his entire life. Although he was paralyzed from just above the waist down at birth, it didn't stop him from living an eventful and remarkable life. He would never complain about his disabilities, to the contrary, he would not let his physical limitations define what he could be. Beginning with his elementary education at Grandview, he participated in the regular physical education programs at the school. When he was eight and nine years old, he was a soccer player at the Boys and Girls Club. He was his team's goalie for two seasons. He wasn't able to stand in goal, so he would lie in the center of the goal with his legs under him or behind him towards the net, using his arms as his legs and head balls away that came towards goal. He thought it was great fun. As a result of his paralysis, his vehicle through most of his life was his wheelchair and it was the genesis of his preferred moniker "Lo-Ryde". He could be seen anywhere in Bloomington when he went out for a push. During the summer, it wasn't unusual to see him pushing down the sidewalk with his shirt off, soaked with water, either draped over his shoulders or on the top of his head for cooling support.
Richard graduated from Bloomington North High School in 1996. He also attended the Recording Workshop, Chillicothe, Ohio, completing their core program. Richard had a life-long love of music. As a youth, he played the drums on Sundays at Bethel AME Church. In his adult years he composed and recorded music in his home studio. All of his music was written and created by his alternate ego "Lo-Ryde".
Richard loved his family. Richard was the family peacemaker, the mediator, the facilitator and the family clown. Holidays, birthdays, or any family gathering were his venue to showcase his comedic skills and his compassion when a family member was experiencing some type of distress or misfortune. Most of all he helped his family move through the tough times.
Richard had so many friends. He was an accepting and compassionate person. He chose always to see the good in people and not judge them. Just as he was with his family, he was someone who could empathize with another's problems and help them through their time of need. His mother always said that Richard was a member of God's Army, placed here to impact anyone he met.
Richard's immediate family was his pets, Keanu and Henry. They were his best friends. He actually birthed Keanu in January 2000 and they were together for 15 years until Keanu passed away in 2015. Keanu would take Richard for walks as it wasn't unusual to see Keanu pulling Richard in his wheelchair down the street. Richard found Henry in a tree right outside his apartment and they were together until Richard's passing. Henry was definitely a blessing in Richard's life as he provided companionship and humor. Henry and Richard were definitely made for each other because they were really very much alike, being both serious and silly at almost the same time.
Richard also loved the challenge of electronics and what it could do to enhance the quality of video and sound. He was constantly reprogramming his parent's television, sound and computer systems much to their dismay as they had no clue to what he had done. Their concern was met by "trust me I know what I'm doing!" He was always right, but it didn't stop them from asking a slew of questions about situations that had a low probability of happening. His home studio was a maze of wires that only he would have known what direction the electrons were going.
His other loves were watching the Simpson's, shows about the Universe and movies, all kinds of movies. Richard would spend hours soaking in the knowledge he learned from the Universe series of videos and then talk to his father about what he learned. Although he loved movies, the Simpson's were definitely at the top of his video and TV watching. He was a huge fan and had probably seen every episode.
Richard is survived by his parents Michael John and Armiller Grubb, his sister, Teresa Marie Grubb McKenzie, his older brother, Michael John Grubb Jr., his nephews, James McKenzie and Justin McKenzie, his Grandfather, Vernon Dale Grubb, and Henry Grubb, his inquisitive cat. Preceding him in death were his maternal grandmother, Idealor Hudson, his maternal step-grandfather, Pete Hudson, his maternal grandfather, Sam Bell Jr. and his paternal grandmother, Nancy Grubb. He was also preceded in death by his beautiful dog, Keanu Grubb.
Visitation for Richard will be held in Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, 302 N. Rogers St. Bloomington, IN from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, February 8, 2016. His funeral service will be held in the church on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m.

I just heard about Richard's passing tonight. So sad :( He was an absolute beautiful soul who always had a positive outlook on life and a big smile. I used to work with him years ago and we became friends and had some great talks. We lost touch for some time but I always considered him my friend. I pray that God will bring comfort and peace to His family during this time. He is certainly a face I will miss seeing around.

Richard was loved by his family and friends. My heart goes out to his father and mother, and his brother, Mike. RIP .

I had Richard in my day care home. With those precious arms he could get everywhere. I also has his brother, and sister. Richard was a real trooper even then in his pre-school years.
I lost track of him after he entered Grandview. From reading all the friends on the guest book, I know that his Mother was correct, he was of God's army, and did wonderful things for everyone. I thought it was very sweet, and appropriate when a friend stated he can now make music with angels. Being dog lovers we know how very much he missed his dog who died. I pray that Henry will not have unbearable grief for his owner, and loving buddy.
His parents are wonderful people, knowing all the correct ways to parent.
Mat God wrap the entire family, and many friends in his loving arms at this sad time.
Comfort your-selves wit the fact that Richard now has two wonderful strong legs.
Richard will be missed. We love you Richard.
Much love, and many prayers to the family, and many friends.

So sorry to see Richard go. I have known him for so many years. In recent years I would only see him maybe once or twice a year at random places but he was always extremely friendly to me and had a great sense of humor. I hate to lose good people in the world and Richard very much seemed like one of them. My condolences to the family in this tragedy. I wish you all the best.

I don't remember much of richard, he was my mom's friend. I do remember that when he would come over and visit he would let me ride in his wheelchair. Once I remember he was letting me ride in the wheel chair it rolled back while I was in it, it rolled back and hit my grandma's car, breaking the hubcap. We immediately went out and replaced them so she would never notice, and she still hasn't to this day. He was a very nice and kind hearted person. He will be missed.... thanks for letting me ride in your wheelchair richard...

I had the opportunity to spend some time with Richard a couple of years ago. He amazed me. Inspired me. Unfortunately my life took a turn that didn't allow the continuance of our friendship, as I moved away and lost contact. But Richard stayed with me in ways I will never forget. His spirit was so full of life, of love. He never had it easy, but he never let it get him down for long. Like anyone, he had his moments of despair, but always short lived and he always bounced back stronger and better than before. It broke my heart to hear of his passing...and due to something no one could have imagined. I wish he had found the love he longed for in this life, but I know he is happier now than he ever could have been on this earth. May God bless and keep you all. Richard, you will be missed. You made a lasting impression on many lives, and so, your legacy will survive.

Mr/Mrs Grubb, I'm beyond sad to hear of Richards passing. I knew Richard well, both as a child in elementary school and as an adult. I worked as Richards aide at Grandview Elementary 4-6th grade. I loved him, advocated for him, and he taught me so much. He literally changed my life. I continued to see him around town through the years and he always gave me a big hug and smile. I even had the great pleasure of being his neighbor for 2 yrs before moving to my present address. I'd be walking my dog and he'd be sitting outside his apt, we'd stop and talk all the time. He was an amazing person. I'll never forget him, ever. May he rest in peace and see us again one day.

Please use us (friends & family) to lean on for whatever you may need. I send my love, support, and condolences.

I have never known anyone like Richard. He not only overcame the adversities he faced in life, but he touched the lives of family and friends in ways that none other could. He was always such a joy to be with and uplifted those who were fortunate enough to be in his presence. My love for Richard-like my memories-shall never fade. I cannot think of him without remembering a story or situation that brings a smile to my face. Forever in my heart. Love, Aunt Susan.

Richard, you will be missed! I will miss all the times we spent together. You were always a great person. You were definitely one of my best friends. I remember you used to always tell me you were your family's mediator and didn't understand why, but the truth is you were a very understanding person and easy to talk to. You always knew how to make me laugh when I was having a bad day. I love you so much Richard! You will always have a place in my heart!!!!

Armiller and Michael, We were so saddened to hear of Richard's untimely death! We remember him so well during the days of Big Bird's Nest and all the gains he made as a preschooler...from not being able to make a sound, only alligator tears to being the "star Smurf" in his graduation skit on campout night! Of course we followed him through school with Jody. I remember one of the days that I was getting the jetline in the school cafeteria ready for a basketball game; school was not dismissed yet, but I hear banging on the vending machines. I looked out and found Richard pounding on the machine as it had eaten his money (the machines were unplugged during school hours for keeping the kids from having junk food). All I said was, "Richard" and he knew my voice, but couldn't see me, and he just ducked and apologized! I often picked him up when he was out on his "Lo Ryder" so I could check in with him on how life was treating him...always chipper. He sure was a blessing to so many and we will always remember his sly smile when he knew he had tricked us! Larry, Sue and Jody Berg, now living in Richmond VA.

There are not enough words to describe the depth of the person who Richard was. Nor, are there words to describe the depth of the friendship that I shared with him. Richard forever altered my life, leaving it filled with so many smiles, laughs and stories to hold on to forever. He became first my friend but eventually and without warning he was simply my family. I loved him and will miss him incredibly. My heart and condolences go out to his family in their time of loss. And hope they can take comfort in knowing without doubt that the loss of Richard will be deeply felt by all whose lives he touched. I am simply one of those lives, one of the lucky ones, xoxo my friend, I love you!
