For a short time, Richard was on the faculty of the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Colorado State University. While there, he was very popular with students and quickly became known as someone who would listen carefully and sympathetically to students. His colleagues appreciated his gentle presence.

I will remember the personal stories Rich shared with those of us lucky enough to have been in the writer's group at the senior center. He added a kind and empathetic vibe to all of us struggling to find our voices. Sharon Reinan
