Richard Holt Obituary
He graduated from Newport News High School in 1955, began his career at NASA Langley in 1956, and graduated from NASA Apprentice School as an Instrument Maker in 1961. During his career at NASA he was presented numerous awards including The NASA Exceptional Service Medal, Outstanding Leadership Medal and Special Achievement Awards. He retired from NASA in 1995 as Head of the Machine Branch, Fabrication Division, and has spent many wonderful years since then residing at "QUITCHERWORRYIN" in Chickahominy Haven.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Francis P. and Frances K. Holt, brother Francis P. Holt, Jr., and sister-in-law Joyce F. Holt. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nancy S. Holt, son Stephen M. Holt, grandson James M. Holt, brother James D. Holt, many nieces and nephews, his golf-cart buddy Max, and a large extended family. Richard was a pillar of Chickahominy Haven where he was known as "Mr.-Fix-It" and as the "Mayor". He was relied on by many for advice and guidance with their projects and will be greatly missed by all. Richard attended Christ Community Church in Toano.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg, VA 23188 followed by a Memorial Service by Pastor Randy Garner. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ Community Church, 9001 Richmond Road West, Toano, VA 23168 or JCC-Bruton Volunteer Rescue Squad, Toano, VA. Dear Nancy; I was very hesitant to offer my condolences for your loss of a man you love dearly and have loved since I can remember. The reason is simple. I don't have the intellect to express what I feel in my saddened heart for you and your family. It has been nearly 60 years from our last conversation over the fence that divided my parent's home from the home you and Richard shared in Glendale. Yet, it seems like yesterday in some ways. Even then, you and Richard would travel the road to your place on the Chickahominy every chance you got. I could go on and on about how my dad thought the world of Richard (I always called him Richard) and how dad would talk about how much Richard helped him after my mother died. Nancy and family Sue and I are saddened by Dicks passing. I was just an Apprentice and teenager when Dick became my supervisor in the Instrument shop. He was my supervisor and mentor and friend my entire career at NASA. I have fond memories of Dick and I will always cherish them.

Mrs. Holt, I am so sorry for your loss. Mr. Holt was a awesome guy. Anytime I was ever in the neighborhood I would always look to see if he was outside just so I could say hi to him. I will always cherish the great memories of a fella who always could make you laugh!

So sorry for your loss. I was lucky to have gotten to work for Richard when I was assigned to the NTF tunnel insulation project. That project would have never been completed without his leadership. He was by far one of the best leaders/person I have ever worked for. I learned a lot from him.

Our hearts and prayers are with the Holt family in this time of loss. "Big Daddy" was an incredible man who reminded us of what it was to be loyal, honorable and fun-loving. We feel blessed to have called him "family" and hope that God's love will help heal hearts in time.

My Dear Holt family, Dick was a dear friend and the best supervisor anyone could hope to work for. I worked with Dick at the NTF Insulation project and he made the hottest, coldest ,dirtiest and nastiest job one I looked forward to every day!! He will be greatly missed!! Nancy and family. So sorry to hear about your loss. Mike has told me many story's about Dick and their time together at NASA. When you stopped by the house last summer, none of us knew it would be the last time we'd see him, but glad we did have the time together.
