Richard Kammeier Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 21, 2024.
Richard Adam Kammeier, 90, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2023, in Jacksonville, FL. Born in Asland, WI on December 20, 1932, to the late Adam and Lucille Kammeier, Richard, affectionately known as 'Dixie Dick,' was a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend.

Richard's formative years were spent in St. Cloud, MN where he attended St. Bonifare High School. His quest for knowledge and service led him to earn a Masters in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Arizona, after proudly serving in the Army and graduating from Medical Field Service School at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Richard's unwavering dedication to his country was further demonstrated through a commendable 26-year career in the United States Air Force, retiring with the rank of Major.

His work as a medical laboratory technician and later as an advisor to the Director of Armed Forces Institute of Pathology left a lasting impact on military medical services. While at Offset AFB, Nebraska, and in various capacities globally, his expertise and leadership shaped the future of military medical practice.

Richard's passion for life was paralleled by his dedication to family and community. He is survived by his son, Mitchell Kammeier; daughter, Mary Neswiacheny; brother, Thomas Kammeier; sister, Geraldine, four grandchildren and three great grandkids. His deep love and commitment to his wife, Gladys Kammeier, remained steadfast until she preceded him in death, as did his parents and brother, Gerald Kammeier.

A devotee of Dixieland Jazz, Dixie Dick's extensive collection of musical works and his tenure as a radio DJ for 88.5 WMNF exemplified his dedication to the genre. His leadership as president of the SunCoast Dixieland Jazz Society spanned three decades, fostering a community of music lovers and preserving the legacy of Jazz. His joy for life was also evident in his hobbies as an avid single-engine pilot, golfer, and angler.

The Kammeier family invites friends and loved ones to a service in remembrance of Richard's remarkable life to be held at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL, on May 31, 2024, at 2:30 PM.

In recognition of Richard's service and commitment, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his honor to the Egypt Temple of Tampa, where his leadership and dedication were recognized through his role as Past Shiner's President. Richard's legacy of service, love for his country, and zest for life will be forever cherished.

I will always remember his infectious laugh and easy going spirit. He was a kind and gentle father-in-law to me and a wonderful grandfather to his grandchildren. He will be missed.
