Richard Kiel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 10, 2014.
SCOTT SMITH, The Associated Press FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Richard Kiel, the towering actor best known for portraying steel-toothed villain Jaws in a pair of James Bond films, has died. He was 74. Kelley Sanchez, director of communications at Saint Agnes Medical Center, confirmed Wednesday that Kiel was a patient at the hospital and died. Kiel's agent, Steven Stevens, also confirmed his death. Both declined to provide further details. The 7-foot-2-inch performer famously played the cable-chomping henchman who tussled with Roger Moore's Bond in 1977's "The Spy Who Loved Me" and 1979's "Moonraker." Bond quipped of the silent baddie: "His name's Jaws. He kills people." Despite appearing in several other films and TV shows, such as "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." and "The Longest Yard," the role of Jaws was an iconic one Kiel could never escape. "To this day, I go out in sunglasses and a hat because people will shout 'Hey, Jaws!' at me from across the street," he told the Daily Mail earlier this year. "The only way I can explain it is that he's like the Road Runner, which Coyote keeps trying to blow up, but he keeps going." Kiel's other memorable roles included bullying golf spectator Mr. Larson in "Happy Gilmore," lethal Dr. Loveless's assistant Voltaire in "The Wild, Wild West" and extraterrestrial Kanamit in "The Twilight Zone." He also reprised the character of Jaws for several James Bond video games and voiced the thug Vlad in the animated Disney film "Tangled." Born in Detroit, Kiel began appearing in TV shows and films in the 1960s, debuting in an episode of the Western series "Laramie." He published an autobiography in 2002 titled "Making It Big in the Movies." ___ AP Entertainment Writer Derrik J. Lang reported from Los Angeles.

His special “Jaws” presence in the 007 movies made them two very unforgettable movie experiences.

I remember you and your wife and Jennifer so fondly! Especially when you would come support Jennifer with her gymnastics. My sister Anita was on Jennifer’s team. We all loved that gym! I took some dance classes with Jennifer too. Your whole family has always been so well loved in our community. Rest well Richard. My prayers are with your family and friends that the Holy Spirit brings them comforting thoughts and memories of you often.

I knew his personally in his later years. I was at his house working on his swimming pool.
He was a very regular and friendly guy. He was nothing like the the Hollywood type. He even had me come inside his house to show me his electronic pool equipment.
He also called me at my home once and asked me if I would come over to help him operate the pool heater I installed in his pool. I was glad to go over and see him again and help him out. He's having a little bit of difficulty getting around due to his age but I was more than happy to help him. He was a swell average guy.
I miss him very much.

I met him once in 1986. Simply a very wonderful man. Really took time to talk to us kids. He was one of those folks where the world is truly a better place because of him.

My sympathies to Mr Kiel's family and friends. He was one of my favorite actors, especially the role of Voltaire on Wild Wild West.
