Richard Kincaid Obituary

Published by Chicago Tribune from Mar. 31 to Apr. 2, 2020.
Richard Darrell Kincaid unexpectedly took his life on Friday March 20, 2020. Many will seek to impose a narrative on this tragedy, but his loved ones have been left searching for an answer. The shock of the global pandemic and market collapse appeared to be just one of many things weighing on him. In the days following the tragedy, family and friends said Richard was the last person they expected to end his own life. The world has lost an extraordinary businessman, a loving and devoted husband, father, son, brother and friend. Richard was survived by his loving wife Jackie, his amazing children, Jake Kincaid, Jenna Kincaid (Max) Omick, and Luke Kincaid. Brothers and sisters include, Carolyn (Gordon) Berry, Nancy Riley, Peggy (Tony) Waldschmidt, Frank (Becky) Kincaid, Chris (Meghan) Kincaid, and numerous nieces and nephews who love him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Darrell and Jo Ann Kincaid. Richard grew up in Ellinwood, Kansas where he graduated from Ellinwood High School. He went on to attend University of Kansas and graduated from Wichita State University with a degree in business finance. He was then accepted into University of Austin Texas where he received a Masters of Business Administration, Finance. Richard married his wife Jackie of nearly 34 years, June 1986. They moved to Chicago where he launched a successful career at First National Bank of Chicago, proceeded by a position at Barkley Bank. He accepted a role with Equity Office, quickly earned his place as Chief Financial Officer, and later became CEO. He administered the sale of the company in 2006. After the watershed real estate deal, he had a desire to pursue a different path. He started and led numerous philanthropic organizations with the goal of helping others to have a better life. For the remainder of his career, he poured his passion into the vision of filling cities around the world with vertical gardens as the CEO of Sage Green Life. Richard was talented and intelligent. Some would say annoyingly so. His kids teased him relentlessly when he sang the wrong lyric to "All of Me" at his nephew's wedding because it was the only thing they ever saw him mess up. He could keep up skiing double-black diamonds with his children, bring an entire room to tears with his singing voice, read a book in a short flight and recall the details photographically. He was an avid tennis player. Richard loved loud music, wine and hosting parties. His youngest son Luke once quipped that his father's house parties got more noise complaints than his high school ragers.

He will be missed by many. He was a rock for his family and countless others who relied on him for advice and stability. There is a tremendous void in the lives of all those Richard touched. The world will never be the same without him. A celebration to honor the life of Richard Kincaid will be announced when the world is a safer place. I worked with Richard at Equity for many years. I'm sorry to hear about Richard's passing. I can't imagine the loss for his family and agree that the world lost a very good man. Richard was intelligent, warm and very human. He was a generous listener too. I so appreciated his love for Jackie. Watching them as a young couple was an endearing experience. Rest in Peace Richard.

Richard was a tireless advocate for ethics in business. He gave his time and excellent advise to help us launch and develop a free educational ethics video series. I will miss him tremendously, and am grateful for all that he gave to see our program succeed. He was a rare breed in the business world, and will be missed by all of us at UT Austin who had the pleasure to work with him on Ethics Unwrapped.

I share many of the same sentiments about Richard. I worked for Richard at Sagegreenlife and admired his passion, dedication and leadership. He was kind, understanding and had a vision to better the world through nature. One of our last meetings talked about developing a program to pay it forward and give back for every living green wall installed. His presence will be missed and my thoughts are with his family, may you keep his memory ever present.

No need to scratch your heads trying to figure out who the heck I am. I don't think I've ever crossed paths with any of the Kincaid family. Sounds like my loss. The obituary that I saw in my local Pioneer Press was so well written that I felt compelled to reach out to you guys. Not only did you beautifully describe the shock and heartache that must come from losing a family member to suicide, but you did an excellent job of painting a portrait of what Richard was like. He sounds like a great guy, and it sounds like he was surrounded by wonderful people. My heart goes out to all of you, and I wish you the best as you stumble through the grieving process.

April 3, 2020

My sincere condolences to you and the family. May the memories of the times you shared comfort you today and always.

Jackie and family, I am so sorry to hear of Richard's passing and your loss. I too find it rather unbelievable. From my social media: I am rare to emote on FB, but of course these are unprecedented times. It is with enormous sadness amidst all the other shock, trauma and sadness we are all enduring that I learned my former colleague Richard Kincaid took his life last week. We made 4 films together under the BeCause umbrella we created culminating with Welcome To Shelbyville. He was passionate about his concern for so many issues translating his business acumen to addressing child sex abuse, homelessness, totalitarian regimes...the plight of immigrants... and immersed himself and his resources in pragmatic solutions. I remember the first time fate crossed our paths stuck in a snowstorm in Aspen at a ranch for young cancer survivors- complete strangers, he shedding tears upon seeing a scene I'd just shot of a young girl with survivors guilt over the death of her friend, and with no words handed me a check to complete the short piece. His unrelenting sense of compassion, generosity and unwavering optimism changed my life profoundly along with so many of the subjects and audiences who lived and absorbed these stories. My heart goes out to to his entire family. Richard created tremendous legacy with this work many may not have known about.
All are shocked as he was just one of those uniquely intelligent, multi talented, reliable guys - a good good man. I cannot help but think that this unthinkable horror we are in is putting so many that seem so strong on the outside in danger internally. And it is an exceedingly tough time to reach out for help when we are all suffering simultaneously. We must check in on one another in these coming months with great care - it's everything. Social distancing must only be a physical necessity countered with social closeness and intimacy by all means virtually. My love and wishes of health and safety to all and for the strength to share vulnerability.

Jackie & family, time and distance kept us apart but that did not keep my heart from breaking when I heard the news of Richard's passing. Many of us have such fond memories growing up with him. I'll never forget the nicknames we made up for our Dads, the many football & basketball games we played and Richard's incredible voice. He's the only person I know that sang to his bride at their wedding. He was a gift to so many and will be missed. Our prayers go up for you and the Kincaid family. God's peace & love to you.

Richard had such a magical voice from early on. I was only in one musical with him, the summer of 1981. He played Curly in Oklahoma. I had one line in the entire show and he thought I had forgotten it. He had my back. I love listening to his music on YouTube. My heart breaks for all of you.

To the Kincaid Family,

As his fellow board member of Rayonier, Inc.
I was privileged to observe your Richard's insightful wisdom and his appreciation for the need to balance serious professional responsibilities with an eclectic and fun life.
While I knew of his love of music, I never did hear Richard sing.
But as I write, I hope you can hear him invoking John Denver's reminder for you and all of us:--"The memory of love will see you through."
May God bless you all at this time of heartache, and may you be comforted by our prayers for Richard's peace and for your strength in all the days ahead.

Richard had the biggest and warm heart for anybody needing help. He could light up a room with his subtle comments and weave funny stories about his family so smoothly , that it made him look totally innocent , leaving them trying to explain what happened while everyone else was laughing! A wonderful husband and father and a true friend.
