Richard Kohl Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 22, 2024.
Richard (Rick) Joseph Kohl (60) took his final ride surrounded by the people he loved most on October 19, 2024. Though he spent most of his life in East Lyme, Connecticut, Rick spent his final years enjoying the "retired" life with his wife, Yvonne in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, enjoying new places and unsurprisingly, making new friends everywhere they went.

Rick is survived by his wife, Yvonne Kohl, his boys Travis and Andy and brand new daughter-in-law Linde (Travis), his brothers the "Kohl Boys" George, Bill, and Eddie, many nieces and nephews and in-laws including his favorite father and mother-in-laws, Ted and Annette Ainslie. It is important to note that Rick was also survived by the many he has taken under his wing throughout his life. He was predeceased by his father and mother, George and Toni Kohl.

Rick graduated from East Lyme High School in 1983 (He liked 3rd grade so much he did it twice). He started his own butcher shop, then went on to be your friendly neighborhood butcher at A&P, where he became "luckiest man in the world" and met Yvonne. Rick spent his career in many meat rooms, Big Y, Tri-Town (Adam's Market), and finally at Food Lion.

Many knew Rick for being at all the games for his boys (usually in his work clothes), as well as coaching T-ball, serving as President of the East Lyme Babe Ruth ("never again"), and teaching the boys to play pond hockey. Rick had many passions in life, he was a lifetime member of the NRA, a member of the Oakdale Rod & Gun and Sandune Archery Club in Myrtle Beach, and a lifetime lover of dirt biking. When Rick wasn't exploring new places with Yvonne, tinkering around the house, or with his boys, he was golfing, watching the Bruins (missing the Whalers) and Red Sox, listening to Rush, or cuddling the cats he never wanted and pretended not to like.

Rick has been an important part of so many people's lives, whether it be giving a little pointer finger wave to the kids while at work, giving advice on how the insulate an old windy attic, or showing up for people who needed someone to show them that there was someone in the world rooting for them. He never hesitated to give his love and support. He will be greatly missed by us all. Good luck up there with Toni and George, we will all do our best to not have you picking your nose at us.

I'm not looking back, but I want to look around me now

Mike and I have been struggling with the loss of Rick. Our heart breaks for his family because he was truly devoted to each and every one of you.We are comforted by the knowledge of he was able to attend Travis and Linde wedding, and see Andy thru his first house. He was so proud of his boys.
Rick was a true patriot and loved his country. We had many conversations at our Myrtle Beach happy hours ! Our best celebration with you and Yvonne was when you arrived here permanently and we celebrated at Greg Norman´s !
Rick loved fixing old things and getting things for free. He once got a free gas grill and walked 2 miles carrying down a Main Street wearing flip flops which had a full tank of gas He was delighted and was the talk of local HH that week.
Rick had a heart of gold.He would do anything for you. Rest easy,Rick. We r keeping an eye on Yvonne. Mike and Kathy

Rick was a kind and generous man. We only got to know him and Yvonne over the last several years, but quickly became good friends. He always had a colorful story to tell about events in life. I sure hope he finally got that harbor freight bucket. We spent our first snowbird winter in Myrtle Beach 2023. Rick and Yvonne embraced our visit making us feel so welcome. Rick was our personal concierge making sure we experienced all that Myrtle Beach had to offer. They took us for a tour of Charleston, after 2 1/2 hours of site seeing, I was like, why don´t we take a break. Rick kept saying "we´re gonna, we´re gonna". We finally wound up in Shem Creek for amazing wildlife, beer and food. He always had a plan. During our winter get away our dog Finn joined us on most outings. Rick masterfully introduced Finn as an Iraq veteran service dog so he could join us. It was all I could do to keep a straight face. But he succeeded most times. What a great human being. He touched our lives and left us with wonderful memories and longing for more. God Bless you brother. You are missed. We continue to pray for Yvonne and the family.

I met Rick at Food Lion. As a former Connecticut resident from North Haven, we connected immediately. We both worked perishables together. We were able to play golf one time together and I introduced him to Fibber´s Irish restaurant which I know he enjoyed. We were two retiree who had a lot in common. I am happy to have known him. I wish him eternal rest and peace. So long Rick . See you on the big golf course in the sky someday.

Richard Kohl was a human of good moral character. A prime example of the American Dream, working his way toward every goal he set to achieve. My Uncle Rick and Aunt Yvonne raised two sons who are now gentlemen of that same moral character.

Uncle Rick was silly, loving, and fun to be around. He made my childhood fun, and I will always remember him as someone who taught me life basics, but to never always take yourself too seriously. Although, the best thing Uncle Rick taught me was that the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 never even happened. IYKYK...

Rest in Peace, Uncle Rick.
You will forever be in my heart...
Your Nephew,
Jason M. Kohl

My condolences to Rick's family - he certainly left this earth too soon. Janice, Tom and I grew up across the street on Bush Hill Drive and I have many great memories of all the times we spent outside sledding, playing kick the can, building forts, etc. We could always count on the Kohl brothers to bring over blue fish they had just caught, or help with a snapping turtle or skunk (!) that got caught in the fence. The obituary captures a joy for life that fits with the Rick I grew up with. I hope you have many wonderful memories. Geralyn Johnson-Reis

Rick and I met in third grade, I too did it twice. We remained friends throughout our school years, we shared many laughs and shed a few tears. In middle school Rick started calling me `beak´ because I had a cowlick that looked like a bird´s beak. At the time it drove me crazy, but now I look back on it fondly.

Our deepest sympathy Yvonne. Can´t begin to imagine the road you are currently navigating. As I read the obituary and the preceding memories and condolences, I realized that while my wife and I probably knew Rick the shortest amount of time (8 months) than most, everything that I read was exactly the person he showed to my wife and I as new friends. I have never met a more upbeat (24/7) person in my 60 years. Going to miss our Friday nights of dinner and entertainment, as well as our back-and-forth discussions of the state of the Bruins. Even though our time knowing each other was short we are better people for having become friends. Rest in peace.

MY first memory of Rick was him as a little boy jumping over his families couch, back & forth, back & forth. He had so much energy. Grew up to be a nice young man and my friend on FB. So sorry to hear of his passing.

Rick guided me as a teenage boy to being a young man in the meat department and gave me very valuable advice not only at work but in life. Rick taught by example how to be a great leader in the meat department which lead to my success as a meat manger by the age of 21. I owe many things to Rick I am blessed and very grateful to have met him early in the road of life. I won´t ever forget him and what he did for me. I also have to thank Yvonne for suggesting to Rick to take me in the meat department as I was her carriage boy first at A&P in Old Lyme. I am grateful to you both. Sincerely, Frank
