ARMIN LUDWIG Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 30, 2012.
Armin Konrad Ludwig, PhD

Professor Emeritus, Air War College

December 30, 1930 - September 4, 2012

Armin was born in Toledo, Ohio, growing up in Muncie, Indiana. Upon conferment of his PhD, Armin took a position with Colgate University, quickly obtaining tenure as an Associate Professor and Geography Department Chair. During his tenure at Colgate, Dr. Ludwig was also a Brazilian specialist and Foreign Studies Program Chair. After 15 years of teaching, research, and devotion to Colgate, Armin's passion for learning led him to explore other opportunities including international research, consulting, and program management in Omaha, Nebraska; Austin, Texas; and Montgomery Alabama. Upon retirement in 1992, Armin, and his wife Pat, moved to Colorado Springs to be closer to their grandchildren, a joy in their lives, where he resided until his death.

Armin took great pleasure and pride in his children, grandchildren, teaching, publication of numerous books and articles, mapmaking and collecting, masonry, railroading, rock collecting and fly fishing.

Armin died peacefully in his sleep after a long illness. During his illness he was lovingly cared for by his wife, devoted caregiver Ruth, and Pikes Peak Hospice; enabling him to remain at home, passing away in a warm and loving environment with loved ones nearby.

Armin was preceded in death by his parents and brother. In addition to his devoted wife Pat, he is survived in death by his children and step-children, Deborah, Erik, Kirk, Gregory, David and Diana; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and many friends. He will be dearly missed not only by his loved ones and friends but also his faithful cats, Sage and Figgy, who kept him warm at night to the end.

A memorial service for family and friends is planned for a later date.

Armin, Dad, Grandpa Armin, and grampy—you have touched the lives of so many people by your dedicated unselfish teaching and loving ways. You will be deeply missed by all who knew you, especially your loving wife. May God keep you near while Jesus holds you in his arms.

Armin was a wonderful friend in his years at Colgate and while teaching at the University of Massachusetts. My wife Jane and I traveled with him to Colombia, Haiti and Guatemala on different trips that we will remember always. Armin was the sharpest thinking colleague I ever had. He coached the Colgate "College Bowl" team to the first ever retirement of 5 time winners as "Undefeated College Bowl ChampionshipTeams." In the 1960s and 70s that was a big thing! Love to Pat & the family!

Very sorry for your loss. Dr Ludwig was a brilliant individual. I always enjoyed my visits with him when he & Ruth lived in Montgomery.

I worked with Armin many years ago at Maxwell AFB and was saddened to learn of his passing. He was a delightful person to work with.
